Which season did you feel more poised about going and winning a Super Bowl prior to the season? 1999 or 2010? This is a tough question for me because I really feel it for both, but I am leaning towards 1999, but that might be because I was not let down as much at that point because I was so young. It might be easier to answer for the older fan, but I think it is a good question. We already know the results of 1999 and how disappointing it was, but beforehand I just knew the Jets were going to win it all........
Yeah, that is my feeling too. The AFC is so strong coming into 2010. Many great teams. With Elway's retirement, I felt the Jets would just logically step in and win.
As a fan I'd say 99. But because of the news coverage of us I'd have to go this year. I don't remember this much coverage for the 99 season.
I'll admit I was only 11 years old heading into 1999 so I'm voting for 2010 just because at 22 its a bit different and I get to read about the upcoming season more and have been able to buy more preview magazines, the internet speculation, the ESPN/NFL Network talk, etc. I don't know, I remember seeng a magazine predicting us all the way in 1999, but I've seen that also in 2010. I think both years are pretty even. I will say though with Elway retired we were the #1 favorites in the AFC, undisputed, whereas we still have to deal with Peyton Manning in 2010.
1999 was our year, I was so hyped up, 2010 we still have so many questions that need to be addressed ... that 1999 team was stacked and ready for Prime Time Let's hope 2010 is a different ending
I picked 2010 although I think 1999 had its own merit. That was definitely a season of really high hopes. But I think with all the hype, and the daily media coverage, hard knocks, commercials, Jets being talked about, and most of all a coach that isn't shy about talking - this year has to take the cake.
Depends on what you mean by expectations. The hype is far greater now because of the internet world we live in, but in terms of realistic expectations I would say that they were much higher in 1999 - the supposed only thing standing in the Jets' way (Elway) had retired, and the team was coming off an extremely successful year. This year the team is coming off a 9 win season that could have easily ended without even being in the playoffs, and the hopes are being pinned on the growth of a second-year QB who was quite bad for much of last season. Not surprisingly, you actually left out the two seasons where realistic expectations were actually the highest - 1968 and 1969. The Jets were clearly as good as anyone in either league those years, and everyone knew it; the Jets not even making the AFL championship game after the 1969 season was a tremendous disappointment.
Heading into both seasons we were considered SB contenders. I think this team is slightly more talented though, so I voted for 2010.
I had high expectations then and I have higher expectations now. Mainly because I already know the outcome of the past so it's hard to gauge. When those expectations don't get realized you tend to forget how high they were, over time of course. So 2010 it is!!
I think that 1999 has the edge because Vinny was playing superbly at QB. We're all hoping that Sanchez picks up where he left off in the playoffs, but he is more of a question mark than Vinny was. I remember being very confident going into 1999. The team seemed set to go all the way, barring injury...
I think 1999 had higher expectations. Remember, we were coming off a 12-4 year w/ a bye so it wasn't a surprise we made the Title Game like it was last year. The 2 time defending champs lost their great QB and we were clear favorites, this year we are considered A favorite not THE favorite.
Now to top off the excitement, the defense will earn its name this year and they shall be called- The Rex Offenders
too be honest, I think 1999 was the year. It was our one year window. When Vinny went down, we were toast, and never got another chance. Going into 2010, our team is young and dominant. We have young studs at all the core positions outside of NT. We have more than 1 year to win a title, if anything we might have the largest window to win it all a Jets team has ever really had
Didn't we just have this poll last month? In case I'm getting early AD, which is always a possibility, 1999 had higher expectations. Parcells had already done the 1-15 to 9-7 to 12-4 thing and after Vinny's great season in '98 I was pretty sure the Jets were going all the way. And yes, the achilles tendon was the worst moment in Jets history for me. Even worse than the Dennis Byrd injury. Edit: the results will be skewed towards 2010 but that's because half the posters on the board were watching The Wiggles as their main form of entertainment in 1999.
In 1998 we went 12-4 and domnated the first half of the AFC Championship game. We had a hall of fame coach with three SB appearances and two victories. Everyone thought the AFC East was ours for the taking. In 2009 we went 9-7 and were playing catchup against the Colts for the better part of the game. Our coach is in year two. People are predicting that the Patriots or even the Dolphins will finish ahead of us. While expectations for us are high this year, 1999 had the highest expectations for this team since Joe Namath became a Jet.
