Everyone keeps bringing up a lack of talent on the Jets roster. So here is my question: Which current players actually do have talent and can be a part of the Jets' success in the future? Here is my list: QB: Sam Darnold Sam has been taking some heat in recent weeks, but to me, he is the best player on the team. If they tank to the point they get the #1 pick, maybe you are forced to pick Trevor Lawrence, but I don't think the Jets will get the #1 pick. Continue to build around Sam. RB: Frank Gore. Just kidding. No one really, but hopefully LaMichal Perine develops into a solid player. WR: Jamison Crowder, Denzel Mims Crowder is a great slot WR. We still haven't seen Mims yet, but he will clearly be on the 2021 roster. TE: No one. OL: Mekhi Becton, Connor McGovern Becton really might be the best player on the Jets roster. McGovern hasn't been great, but I think he is a solid player. Lewis, Fant and Van Roten can be upgraded. Especially Van Roten. DL: Quinnen Williams That's it. McClendon is too old and the rest are not really impressive. OLB: Tarrell Basham, Jordan Jenkins Both can be improved, but I also think both have talent and a spot on roster. ILB: CJ Mosley We think Mosley is a great player. He won't be on the field for 2 years, so the hope is he can bounce back to his pro-bowl ways in 2021. CB: Bless Austin, Brian Poole Austin and Poole look like solid CB's. The Jets still clearly need to add a #1 CB though and I think Poole will be a free agent, so may move on. Safety: Marcus Maye, Ashtyn Davis I like Maye and without Adams, I feel the Jets can re-sign him. Hopefully Davis has a bright future too. Punter: Braden Mann He is The Mann! The Jets punter for many years to come, and their best tackler too! Kicker: Sam Ficken I am not sold on Ficken, but he is 7 for 7 right now. He can be upgraded though. That is 16 players. I am sure there are some I missed. Who would you add? Who would you take off the list? No matter what, Joe Douglas has a lot of work to do.............
What a depressing thread. We might be a playoff team in 2022 if we're lucky. I say Griffin and Herndon will be on the 2021 roster, but both will be on thin ice.
CJ Mosely? I am not sure since he takes a pass where the rest of the League fights COVID (Mac overpaid him so he wont care) Keep Sam ..but only to compete with Morgan or presumably Lawrence Ficken and Mann are both keepers Herndon is a faker ,,Griffin gets a chance The OL is still a work in progress other than Mek B and I guess McGovern Keep the ageless Gore and catch for the $ Crowder Every rookie on Offense and Defense (Mims and A Davis and the rest t see how Douglas draft works out) Cornerbacks and Edge Rushers still a work in progress too but agree on Austin and Poole Maye is a keeper Q Williams showing some life Linebackers need upgrading ..not sure who we keep Its a hard job finding diamonds in the rough with the worst team in Football smh Meanwhile wearing my mask taking my vitamins, meds and exercising my 60 plus year old body ...Gotta to live to see our return to the SB!
Definite Keepers: Becton, Q. Williams, Mann, Crowder, Maye, Poole, Fatukasi, A. Davis, Mims, Jeff Smith, Berrios, Hennessy, Mosley (2021 only), McGovern (2021 only unless he improves) Probable Keepers (unless or until they prove otherwise): Lewis, Jenkins, Morgan, Franklin-Myers, Huff, Clark, Hall, Perine, Morgan, Wesco, Phillips, Cashman, Austin, Ficken, V. Smith Maybes: Sam, Herndon, Fant, Onwuasor, Andrews, Shepherd, Basham, Luvu, Willis, Guidry, Jackson, Zuniga, Kyron Brown, McDermott, Malone I know that some are speaking with their hearts and not their heads, but we can't add 51 new players in 2021. That's impossible. All of this year's draft picks will be back at a minimum. There are others that deserve to be back and still others who should at least be here for TC, and a number of them should make the roster. With 11 draft picks and FA, at most, I think Douglas will be able to add 16-17 new players. With only 14 definites, that only makes around 30-31 players. Most of my probables and some of the maybes will be back as well.
Herndon has been one of the biggest disappointments of the season, Griffin probably proving last season was a fluke and the reason he didn't get much of chance at his previous team.
Haven’t seen him yet, due to injury but I would wager Cameron Clark is on the roster and is going to be worthy as a backup at the absolute floor. Also Fant has not been a problem at all so far, the jailbreak pressure and disruption is mostly from Guard to Guard.
get rid of the oldest guys and clear up as much space as possible under the cap. be a seller at the trade deadline even if you stock up on future 4-7 round picks. only sign free agents to short guaranteed contracts. ones that fail to live up to talent expectations can be cut quickly. build through draft, and bring in a coach that has a history of coaching up young players, like riley at oak state, or nfl coordinators like oc for buffalo, baltimore, san fran. heck, what jets fan right now would not trade gase and sam for marrione and minshew? stop drafting usc qbs!
Thats the spirit. God willing we're all going to make it to see our return to the SB. Except for maybe Gase
I really hope they don't resign Jordan jenkins. He has been a 3-4 OLB for the jets, and he never gets to the QB. He gets a few coverage sacks, but he never beats the OT around the edge.
I am glad someone finally said what I have been thinking. Hendon has looked terrible--play Griffin the rest of the year at TE--nothing to lose.
I understand that. He has been good at setting the edge, gives it his all, and has improved as a pass rusher. I think there is a place for him, but he may not want to return. I know that he has been frustrated with the lousy play around him and with Gase or Williams.
Man this roster is so bad...there is not one single Superstar, let alone pro bowler. Not a one. clearly we can’t get 53 new players, but honestly there is not a single position with the exception of left tackle that can’t be improved. I also have no idea what the fuck is wrong with Herndon but he needs to be benched....he’s been abysmal with his drops and fumbles. And we needed him to come through for us...instead he’s been shitting the bed fierce. We need help everywhere ... but seriously on OL, WR, RB, CB and pass rush. That’s basically the whole team. I can see why JD is trying to accumulate picks...this team will be turned over in the next two years.
I’m in agreement with most of the comments, I personally like Cager, with a little polishing I believe he can be a good WR for this team. His strength is his size and ability to beat defenders on 50/50 catches. Have not seen Sam give him a chance to do that. Herndon is a surprise, not sure if he’s just going through motions or teams are actually taking him away with double bracket coverage and making Sam look elsewhere. Definitely a lot of work for JD in getting high end talent on this team. It’s obvious Jets have enough role and special teams players now they need a handful of superstars in some positions.
Although Herndon has been a major disappointment this year I wouldn’t give up on him so soon. He’s a top candidate for the Gase freedom watch. I’d like to see a pick used on a TE to compete but no reason not to bring back Herndon and see if he can regain his pre Gase play.
That is a good point, but no doubt, so far in 2020 he has been awful. Definitely too early to give up on him but he also doesn't belong on the list right now with his play.
