What are your thoughts. Mangini has placed a premium on players of a high character with a team first attitude. He is not F-ing around with idea as evidenced by the removal of two All-Pro players (Abe and Mawae) he felt were not of that mold. (Regarding Mawae he was believed to be regarded as a Sh*&-stirrer in the locker room). He want's a team full of Brusci's and Vrabels and he will make it happen.

For example, IMO Hobson could be considered a bit of an underachiver, I've never seen him turn it on even though he might have the talent. I think he is a player with a target on his back.

Which other players should watch their backs?

Curtis is a Mangini player and so is Vilma. Aaaaaand that's about it. But that's all you need: your leaders.

What exactly is a "Mangini" type player? You have to give Mangini a chance to coach before you'll know that.

Precisely. I'm not totally sold on this "Mangini guy" stuff until I see him for a season or two. It's easy to talk the talk. I'm not ragging on Mangini... in fact, I think he is what he claims to be and hopefully lives up to all the hype. But he is a very young guy with relatively little experience, let's face it. We know he comes from the Parcells-Belichick mold and that's pretty much all we know. Him running around the Outback whipping up farm-team players doesn't impress me yet. Nor am I totally convinced of the level to which he contributed to any Patriots' defensive successes. This all remains to be seen and I'm hopeful he lives up to all our expectations, which, incidentally, have now reached gargantious proportions. I do know I like what he says, so that's a start. Now I want to see him DO the things he says he'll do... surround himself with selfless players, make them overachieve, the team comes first, etc., etc.

Color me skeptical, but after the Herminator Act, I'm "once burnt and twice shy..."

I'm still on the JM bandwagon...

He's a guy that works his tail off to get better - he was injured last year and didn't have much to work with at QB....

I say he's one of the most improved players on the team this year and is certainly a Hard Nosed Mangini type player...

Read the articles at the new website and it says Victor Hobson and James Reed don't have the ability or size to play the new system.

Here's my best guess as to who is a "Mangini-type-player", even before camp starts:

    Penny
    Martin
    Kendall
    Jones
    Moore
    Coles
    Cotchery
    Dreesen

    Vilma
    Kassel
    Kimo
    Thomas
    Ellis
    Chatham
    Rhodes
    Dyson

    Nugent
    Graham

Jury's out on the rest. Hell, the jury could be out on these guys as well.

I think the whole "Mangini-type player" thing is severely overrated. A guy like that is a team-first player, nothing really more. You think Corey Dillon was considered a team-first player before he went to New England?

And I bet if Mawae was 28 and not coming off an injury, we would have found a way to keep him, even if he's considered "a shit-stirrer."

Well Mangini in his first press confrence talked about the type of player he wants. He wants players that are versatile, durable, intelligent and team first.

Not every player that they draft or sign is going to fit that mold. But Mangini has clearly defined the types of players he prefers.

Mangini Type players is not conjecture, and it is not to be overrated or underrated. The guy was clear: "Smart, tough players!"

I see that trend starting with who he got rid of so far and who the Jets have signed as FA. The draft will be telling as well...does he continue to go for Smart Tough players and avoid the hype and workout guys?

I'm positive about this approach. Look, neither the Steelers nor the Patriots - the most recent Super Bowl winners - had the most talented teams...just the best TEAMS!

This whole "mangini guy" garbage needs to stop. He is essentially a nobody who has never even coached a pro game in his life; and now you guys are psychoanalizing him like you have known him your whole life. The bottom line is that you know nothing about him as a person, nor do you know anyting about what kind of players he likes. So think about that before assuming that Mangini only likes "good characters" or "team first" guys, cause none of you really know anything about him.

except he's a cloned mini-me of belicheck, so stop trying to come off as highly intelligent, because when you start assuming things (yes you are assuming also) you make an ass out of you and me (dont know, just figured to throw in that retarded joke)

    Gotta start somewhere ...

Mangini has given us very few scraps regarding his master plan. It is no assumption that this guy has a "Plan", whether it will work or not will not be known for 2-3 years. He had to show up for his interview with Woody with some kind of presentation, Powerpoint or otherwise.

As a Bill & Bill Flunkie he will be bringing a great deal of their ideology with him, particularly since he is so young and inexperienced.

Getting in his head, as well as Tanny's, is another angle for predicting player moves, draft or otherwise.

He hasn't said much, but he has thrown out some cryptic clues, one being the "type" of player he was bringing in and going to keep. The FA signings so far have been low key but but seemingly solid.

As far as releases, if Mangini wanted Abe or Mawae then the Jets would have found a way to keep them much like the Mangini-type player Pennington (and yes i know the contract, cap hit, yada yada yada ... he'd be gone if he weren't wanted)

As many of you have stated, he is unproven, untested, etc. but he is the Head Coach of the Jets for 2006 like it or not so lets over-analyze the SH*& out of him !!
