Ill be the first to admit I was severely disappointed with Williams with our first round pick. Not because I don't believe he is a great talent and can add a fucking awesome rotation to our d-line (which should be unstoppable this year). But for the reason I was hoping we would add a legit offensive weapon to an offense that has been abused and neglected during the ryan reign. Enter round two, Devin Smith, a true take it to the house deep threat possible monster number 1 wr we have been bitching and crying for, for what seems like an eternity. Career college stats for his 4 year collegiate career are as follows; 121 receptions, 2503 yds rec, avg a 20.7 per rec, with 30 td's. In 2011 he had 294 yds for 4 tds. Nothing to write home about. In 2012 he had 618 yds, for 6 tds, A upgrade to his 2011 season but still mediocre at best. In 2013 he had 660 yds, for 8 tds. Not the biggest jump but getting respectable. Last year in 2014 he had 931 yds, with 12 tds all along with the qb position in constant flux for Ohio State. Constant improvement from a wr in the face of adversity year to year is what you want to see. Now I know our qb position is nothing to write home about but if there is one thing Geno Smith can do is haul it deep. When given the opportunity Geno can usually hit his wr deep for a huge gain. Devin Smith is the master at hauling in the deep pass from the collegiate level. It almost seems like a match made in heaven. With Decker, Marshall and Ivory commanding most of the attention I would expect to see a lot of 1 on 1 coverage for Smith. If geno can take advantage of these looks our entire offense jumps up 20% in effenciey with the opposing defenses having to think about a 4th threat. I would expect for a rookie season for Smith to compile 800 to 900 yds and 7 to 8 tds. Coupled with our 2 pro bowler wr's we should be looking at a very fun and take the top off the d kind of offense this year. So I ask you this gang green? Where the fuck is the love for Devin Smith??? Ps. Heres a highlight video from youtube showing he isn't a Stephen Hill clone smh....
I'm plenty hyped about the guy, he's my favorite pick of the entire draft... but I also think expectations have to be tempered. I think his transition is going to be pretty smooth playing next to two big physical receivers that command attention, so I can see an immediate impact. I think it's just going to be as a home run hitter. I'm worried more about 2 years from now with him. Not even worried really, just interested.
Not to get too off topic. But in hindsight, lets say we took White instead of Williams at 6. We have our legit WR threat. Then our 2nd round pick comes along. Instead of D.Smith who are we taking? Really werent a lot of good defensive options outside of maybe Kendricks and Perryman.
And Smith would have had 3 or 4 more TD's this past season, if he didn't have to slow down and wait for a football.... Fact.
Besides Gholston on Jake Long, don't think there's ever been a more exciting highlight package of a Jets draft choice. That said - hard to imagine this kid being a miss -- too much consistency in what he does well.
Smith won't have the type of success he could've add in the Saints Packers Colts or whoever else that has a great offense but he should have a pretty good year here. People can hate on Geno for a lot of things but he's not bad at throwing the ball deep. His rookie year he was shockingly in the top 6-7 QB's in deep accuracy and ratings and that was the worst WR year we ever had. With Marshall, Decker, Kerley, and Amaro there's no way Smith won't get loose a couple times.
He has his issuea but Gregory fits the bill. Dude has all the tools to be a dominate olb in this league and would excel with our front line.
Devin Smith was the best deep threat in the entire draft - we needed someone to take the top off the defense. Hopefully Smith develops into a more complete receiver.
I agree that in terms of overall skill Gregory fits the mold in the 2nd round. But w/o the problems he could've made sense to us in the 1st. I got no feeling that we were a legit threat to take him no matter where he dropped.
EXACTLY I don't want to hear how GeNO can throw the long ball. What about all the other mistakes he makes to negate the one or two bombs he is going to hopefully get off in a game?
What bombs did Geno complete last year? Outside of the last game to Decker....I don't recall him completing anything deep.
His kinda speed is handy all over the field. The Jets just have to figure out the best way to use him.
Who exactly was the deep threat the last two years? That's probably why he didn't throw deep too often.
