He's now seen a reduced role and is working primarily with the number 2's. I also keep reading that the coaching staff isn't too thrilled about him. Are we missing something? Guy has awesome hands and I think can be an awesome slot guy for years.
Maybe it's something about his work ethic...maybe just maybe he failed a test and will be suspended shortly? Who knows but it seems kinda odd since we've been successful when he makes plays.
he's always been kind of overrated by Jets fans because he was the only pass catcher on this team worth a damn for quite awhile. But running with the 2s is kinda where he should've always been slated. It is kind of surprising though that Enunwa is taking his reps but maybe Enunwa is showing promise? either way Cimini mentioned trading Kerley and they shouldn't do that. He offers solid. reliable depth at the position and despite the fact that he loves his fair catches, he is reliable receiving punts too.
He's always been kind of average. Our receiving corps over the past years have been so bad that average was the best we had. So he seemed like a great player for us until we got a legitimate receiving corps. Now that we got good WRs he's being outshined. Maybe one or two of our younger receivers are showing the coaching staff that they can bring as good if not better play than Kerley's production. Maybe they see some younger guys having more upside and are giving them their shots. Either way I'm sure Kerley will still make the final roster, just unsure of what his role will be or how big it'll be.
Smith, at a minimum will be ahead of him when he is healthy so that automatically makes him second string.

Idk what some of you are saying in regards to him being average. I think Kerley is very good and above average. You can see it in his route running and his hands. He's tearing it up today in training camp. I love his play
This regime has zero ties to him. He isnt so good that he carries extra clout and should automatically be named a starter. He needs to prove to the staff that he belongs with the ones. If Enunwa is having a better camp, he'll get the snaps.
I think everyone's just about summed it up. He's painfully average and very limited. If they see someone as quick as him that's not a midget then why not move on from mediocrity?
They need to stop putting his camp highlights all over the jets website then because it looks like he's chopping defenders up with very sharp and crisp routes to me.. lol
As much as we like to talk about Fitz vs Geno, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, etc., this is still going to be an offense that is predicated on the running game. Given that Gailey has come out and said that they'll use primarily a man run blocking scheme, they're going to need wide receivers who can block in order to sustain a downhill attack. While a good blocker for his size, Kerley is obviously limited in what he can do in that regard. I think Gailey is trying out some other guys to see who gives the best combination of being a reliable target as well as a run blocker in a power attack.
He regressed the last two seasons. He had a lot of drops the last two seasons. But he also had a TD taken away against Green Bay (MM, TO) and catch in the back of the end zone out of bounds against Chicago. He is tough over the middle and he has been reliable/clutch on 3rd down, but he can't drop the ball anymore...my guess is Mac doesn't see Kerley in long term plans and I think Kerley got a raise under Idzik. Kerley is going to have to get hungry this season and make the most of his opportunities.
good post. i agree we will need to emphasize the running game, and that Gailey is likely taking a look at different combinations. One thing Gailey has shown in the past, is an H-back plus a big bodied WR used almost interchangeably in the slots. I believe he was going to use Marshall and Amaro in those slots, with Decker plus the field stretching of Owusu (and eventually Smith) on the outsides. hopefully those guys get healthy soon. With Enunwa on the field, you have a package that lends itself to the run game, like you mention, plus some big body possession receivers you can use in shorter ydg situations. Either way i believe Kerley contributes in several combinations as well. He gets open quickly, he catches the ball, and he's a chain mover. Considering we will try to get the ball out of the QB's hands as quickly as possible, Kerley will still be very valuable. then factor in his position versatility, playing inside or outside, and defenses won't simply know our formation based on who is on the field/in the huddle. 4WR sets, 3WR plus inline TE, 3WR plus Hback (playing inside or out)....... he'll get plenty of work.. he might even look better than ever as a result of better talent around him, and a QB with more accuracy.
Kerley isn't anything special bottom line here.....The coaching staff obviously agrees.Yea he makes a big play every now and then but for the most part he is inconsistent and dissapears a lot.Maybe now with Marshall and Decker on both sides and him in the slot he will get some chances at big plays.
The disconnect with Kerley and the new staff is the fact that the old regime gave Kerley a 3 year extension worth 14 million( not sure what's guaranteed) .So in Kerleys mind he earned his spot (which he didn't) and the coaching staff seems to be challenging him to see what hes made of....he needs to step up here
He's a quality slot guy. The Jets have 2 guys clearly better (Marshall and Decker) and another guy in Devin Smith who has way more ability (although he still has to prove it on the field. Enuwa is a bit of an unknown and could have simply just jumped him in the DC. A lot of people were hoping Evans could have jumped him last year as well before he got hurt.
He's a decent slot receiver, but that's it. Just decent. Not good, not great. He doesn't have the speed to get separation against good CBs.
He's neither "very good" or "above average". He's an average slot guy with limited blocking skills. The coaching staff probably sees more upside in the younger guys.
