I'll try to do this after every game, hopefully highlighting things which may point long-term positives for the team 1. Shonn Greene ran hard...its amazing how good the line looks when you hit the hole faster 2. Sanchez to Burress in red zone... should be good for one TD per game or opening up other receivers if Plax is doubled teamed 3. Maybin again
A good solid win on both sides of the ball. The JETS clearly need the run game to make the offense go. Nice to see it back in action yesterday. Sanchez is just so good at play action and a working running game makes play action possible. Other wise...... The other major positive is that they needed to win this game. San Diego is a good team and beating them does several things. It should eliminate for now the carping in the locker room. It gives the team a confidence boost way beyond beating Miami. Most importantly the JETS keep pace in the AFC East. It ain't over yet baby....
Great idea for a recurrent thread. I agree with each point you mentioned, and would add for Maybin that he's at least trying to increase his repertoire. I'm guessing that's Rex and Pettine warning him that he'll continue to get washed out of plays initially by quicker blockers. I get the feeling the Bills expected him to simply come in with moves and use his speed, but our defensive minds won't allow that. Sanchez to Burress is the most promising. Their completion percentage coming in was dreadful. They're still not connecting as well as hoped for, but his primary use is going to come in the RZ anyway.
One other positive out of this win and that would be a diminution of the anti-Schottenheimer posts for a while. I note that I haven't seen any here this morning, so far. I did not have any issues with the play calling yesterday. Anyone else
I gotta go with the defensive adjustments made by Pettine and Ryan in the second half. Seems as though they took a good hard look at the trending and made all the right moves resulting in a second half shutout. I'm reading where the Chargers aren't giving any credit to the Jets for winning yesterday. Sounding like pussies again just like always. Some things just don't change..
No, but there's the perpetual fear that they'll rightfully return in 2 weeks. It's a positive when the threads don't pop up because it means they're unmerited for that short term.
That too. We looked like we were struggling when Ellis had to come out, which is a good sign for our future, but was terrible for the 1st half. The adjustments at halftime were huge.
I think complaints about the play calling are pure faggotry. So their relative absence today is the biggest plus for those who post here. As for the Jets themselves, I was impressed that other than that botched communication leading to Gates's TD, that E Smith actually had a very good game. Good. Improved safety play will come in handy the rest of the season. Guy can hit, even if he's a problem covering TE's on pass plays.
Yeah, what a turnaround at the half. The Jet D could not get off the field in the second quarter. What a difference in the second half.
Yes, it was good to see Burress step up and become the red zone option that he was supposed to be. Let's face it, he isn't going to be the primary receiver he was before he went to jail but in the red zone, he's a problem for opposing defenses.
Best part is no more lack of Leadership quotes this week... because All of a ####'n sudden the jets have leaders - Amazing how that ### happens K Jenkins. huh? Leadership card is the most tiring in sports IMO for the ex-baller.
The offense looked competent, and the defense stifled a great passing attack. Great win to have before a BYE week - a chance to assess what went wrong the first few weeks, and what went right yesterday.
Not to be a killjoy here but this team always plays like shit coming out of a bye week. Hopefully Ryan and Co. finally gets their shit together and NOT give this team 2 weeks off. They should be practicing in pads as much as the CBA allows during this time.
offense- sanchez, what a surprise, when you give the QB a running game and a little protection, he suddenly is good again... overall good game... made a mistake on the INT, but i attritube that partly to the drive going out of whack due to the penalty... hell of a throw and catch on the would-be TD to holmes... o-line- did their job... remove the penalties and were looking good greene- happy they trusted him to carry the load... i havent lost faith in him... if we can block for him consistently he will get the job done... receivers- obviously plax finally produced... BIG... impressed by kerley, hes looking great in the slot. that one play where he broke his out route early and scurried to grab te first down was very telling of what kind of player he can be. also he showed some nice playmaking ability and quick footwork on that screen pass that got pulled back defense- struggled at times to stop the run, but with harris, devito, and ellis banged up they got the job done... CB play was stellar, probably the strongest aspect of our team... revis, needless to say. wilson... awesome. so happy hes coming along... if we can get cro to be consistent there will be no passing on us. overall- o-line has to keep improving. d-front has to play a tougher and not get blocked so easily... we need to fight to hold containment on the edges... tackling has to get better or else jackson is gonna slip thru us like a greased monkey... big step forward and a much needed bye week to get healthy
The defensive adjustments. Sticking with the run to open up passing. Maybin. Red Zone play calling still a bit iffy. But it worked.
Agree about the communication improvements. Your inputs are always spot on. However, not sure about Smith's performance. He seems to struggle with his lack of speed. Saw him on one play out ( 4th quarter I believe) out in front in the middle of nowhere leaving the receiver all alone for a huge gain. May be that is the play you refer to but I worry about his lack of speed.
I will add Wilson's great performance, good adjustments on the second half by both the offense and defense, and improvements on the OL. Ellis did good and will be a great contributor. Areas of improvement are: reduce penalties, play the first half like the second half, improve the red zone running performance. When the weather turns ugly we need our running game to turn it up more.
I don't blame Smith for the TD for Gates. I think that was on Leonhard, who screwed up the call on coverage. You could see it. But you're right about the play you mentioned, which was on Smith. Still he had ten tackles and laid some big hits out there, which you want from that position. His speed is not his strong suit, to be sure. But he hits hard, and makes tackles. He's not the best safety in the league, but yesterday I saw little reason to complain about him. Also agree it is great to see Wilson playing well. He had me worried last year, but every week that pick looks better.
Is it me or are they using Mauga more as an ILB and moving Scott to OLB on not passing downs to keep Westerman off the field on some downs?
