I'm curious what you guys want to do to address the hole at LT. If I were GM, my first choice would be to inquire about a Mo trade involving Joe Thomas. If we could get Thomas and a draft pick (someone mentioned the 32, but I think that's wishful thinking), I would be happy enough to make the swap. Otherwise, I would pursue Jake Long and Will Beatty. Neither are particularly attractive, but we could probably sign both for less than 9M (if we're lucky, Brick's 9M = Long + Beatty + rookie class). As long as one of the two stays healthy, doesn't matter which, it would be a win for us. On the other hand, I think trading for Ryan Clady would be a mistake. He has an injury history like Long and Beatty, he's almost the same age, and he would cost more money plus a pick. But we have to do something; I wouldn't be happy forcing a tackle selection in Round 1 and then forcing the rookie to start from Day 1.
Mac likes to fill critical positions with vet players where you know what your getting and draft the best player available. This was evident last year with Williams and Devin Smith. I would want either Joe Thomas or Clady. I think the Broncos will eventually cut Clady because they can't pay 2 LT and they need a QB + need to sign Von so we might not have to trade in that scenario. In the Thomas scenario I have said it for a few weeks now a trade with Mo for #32 and Joe Thomas makes a lot of sense and is a good trade for both teams. I really don't want to reach for a LT and unless Conklin falls to us I can't see Mac pulling the trigger on Decker/Ifredi/Spriggs at #20.
Jack Conklin and Taylor Decker are two likely picks at 20 now maybe even Jason Spriggs. I'd still like to sign Will Beatty or Jake Long as insurance and we'd have real nice depth at Tackle.
Continue shopping Mo for a mid-1st rounder. Use that pick on Conklin or Stanley. Look at most of the top LT's in the league. They are high draft picks. Hopefully Mac doesnt think we can just pick anyone in the middle rounds and hope for the best in a competition with a stopgap vet. These guys are paid the big bucks for a reason and the best of em have to come via a premium draft pick.
Yeah, or sign Long/Beatty. I can easily see Mac picking up somebody by the end of camp based on need. Use the pick for BPA. Another pick for Mo would be a luxury tho...
why can't an option be to sign someone and draft someone also? mac should grab long or beatty to fill in the spot now and hope to come out of the draft with a longer term answer.
Can't plan on going LT in draft because it's impossible to know what will be available at 20. Best case scenario right now is signings veteran and hopefully finding an immediate plug in or a future replacement in the draft.
Veteran signing and whatevers available in the draft.....It would have been easier if this happend before free agency started. It makes me wonder why Mac waited so long to ask him to take a paycut.Mac doesn't seem to be very good at forseeing future events based on what I've seen so far ,from last years spending, the Fitz situation ,D Brick and Wilkerson etc...Mac def seems to be living in the "right now" and doesn't seem to have his eye on the future
Looks like they're re-signing Iljana. I doubt that would in any way change their desire to continue to upgrade at LT
I selected "other" because I think we should either wait and do nothing and select an LT in the draft or, if we are going to trade Mo (which I am against), then trade him for at least an early 1 plus a 2 and select an LT. I'd much rather see the Jets go into the draft with two 1's and two 2's and draft an LT rather then trade for one. It helps us with salary and it also helps us get younger.
The bottom line is that Mo is a beast and he has been the anchor of the Jets line. Who knows what will happen with Richardson as far as suspension for his nonsense last year. He beat the criminal charges but that has nothing to do with the strong likelyhood of a multi-game suspension. That's if he doesn't do anything else dumb in the next year. I'm against trading Mo, but if they are going to do it, they damn well better get good value for it. Renting a veteran OL for two years and getting a mid round pick that is as likely as not to be a bust is not value.
Hate the Thomas idea. Guy turns 32 this season. Expensive short term move. We need to think long term. Even if that means growing pains on a rookie this year. Hate the cladybidea also. Turns 31 this year and coming off an acl injury and makes 9 million. Give me a younger fa or day 1 or 2 rookie
Mo Mo is gone one way or another. If we don't trade him now all we get is a compensation 3rd rounder when he walks next year If we get a 2 or better we need to take it
Unless they pull a deal with Tanny, no way we get a 1st and 2nd for Mo. We might possibly get a couple of seconds, or a low 1st, not both.
