Well I've been working on a paper for 3 hours and I and almost done with my first paragraph, so a paragraph means a lot to me right now.
Ok so i read through it, and if what I'm reading is right, it seems like bullshit. So basically because Ghost had would have given more money if he played more, he was benched. I KNOW he wasn't being productive but still, with a stipulation like that, if money is a real concern, even if he was playing decent they still would bench him. How is he suppose to grow and get better while he sits on the bench and only takes part in practice. But it does seem like Ghost wants to play and wants to TRY to be effective on this team. Hopefully we keep getting reports about his progress. Really looking forward to Hard Knocks, never saw it before so not sure what to expect, but hopefully get a decent idea about whats going on roster-wise. Hope this post isn't too long for some ppl to read..
So essentially Gholston gave up tons and tons of guaranteed money to try and get the team to play him and prove to the world he doesnt suck major dick? That is easily the best thing he has ever done for the Jets... Also if I am understanding this properly, he didnt truly give up a penny, he has the chance to earn it all back if he plays to some level that apparently isnt unattainable, even for him.
I'm not going to try and pretend I understand all of that salary cap terminology and shit, but I got the jist of it. Moves like these are why we'll never be in cap hell under Tannenbaum. He broke into the NFL as a cap specialist, and crunches numbers in crazy ways.
In short - The Ghost will hit the cap at less money when we dump him next year. If he wants to get paid fully he will have to earn it with incentive clauses. In any event, I trust Tanny can outsmart the Ghost and his representation.
Hopefully, Tanny wiped his ass with it and then used it to wrap a burrito, finally shoving it up da bitches ass
Gholston is the luckiest man in the world. He won't have to lead a f*cked up life when he's older from all the collisions. He'll essentially be retired, rich, and young.
He did the team a solid by agreeing to earn his money. Perhaps the only thing we'll ever get out of this guy is his reworked, more team friendly contract.
So they were holding him off of the field because they gave him a shit-ton of valuable playing-time incentives? I'm guessing Tannenbaum is not going to make the mistake of putting those in rookie first round contracts again. I wonder what the incentives are that would let him earn the money back. If they're statistical incentives, then I'm guessing he's fucked in that department.
I wonder from a ownership perspective if they asked the CS, "I gotta pay this kid 9.5 mil if he plays X amount of time. Does he even deserve that much time? Or is he going to hurt the defense?" He wasn't worth seeing if he could play the snaps worthy of getting game experience because he would have hurt the defense and hurt the wallet. Good move not playing him. How embarrassing. They won't play you to get experience because its not worth the extra few million dollars.
As I have said before, I don't care if Mangini's horrible understanding of trade values got us Sanchez and Edwards. I will always hate him for getting us this guy over Leodis McKelvin.
At least Gholston is showing he actually WANTS to play. The guy is willing to make his contract less favorable to himself so that he has a chacne to prove hes not garbage. Now lets just hope he goes out there and earns his keep
The article doesn't say that he had bonuses in the past that would have been easily reached if he had played - only that he had a $3.6 million bonus next year for easily reached playing time (along with contract escalators for the same thing). I think it would have come out a while ago if he was missing out on bonuses and pay increases by not playing the last two seasons, so I take this to mean that this is only an issue now. I do think that it's a positive that Gholston was willing to do this. If he cared as little as some people here have said, he would have refused to renegotiate, pretty much guaranteeing that he would either be cut before the season, or never see the field, be cut next year, and find it almost impossible to get another team to look at him. This way he'll get a legitimate chance to show that he's a football player; he'll still get cut next year (or have to accept a major restructuring of his deal), but he'll actually have a chance at having some genuine NFL play to show to other teams.
I hope he proves his worth this year, he could be a huge value to this team. If one guy on our DL gets injured then it'll be likely that Gholston would get considerable playing time considering that there isn't much depth there.
