ESPN has been running "what if thing on Belchick stayed with the Jets" I never know why did he resign and also the way he did.....Anyone Thanks. "When Parcells stepped down as head coach in 1999, he had already arranged with team management to have Belichick succeed him. However, Belichick would be the New York Jets' head coach for only one day. When Belichick was introduced as head coach to the media—the day after his hiring was publicized—he turned it into a surprise-resignation announcement. Before taking the podium, he scrawled a resignation note on a sheet of loose leaf paper that read, in its entirety, "I resign as HC of the NYJ."
What if we drafted Dan Marino? What if Peyton came out early? What if Doug Brien didn't miss TWO field goals? What if I could fly and spit fire our of my ass? I hate Bill now, I'll take Rex and Sanchez now as well. We still have a chance this year to prove the East is ours. We're tied in the series and this is much bigger than ay divisional win.
He resigned b/c he didn't want BP over his shoulder. I do not believe he comes close to the success he has had in NE if he stayed here UNLESS he also got lucky and drafted Tom Brady here.
This thread is gonna be like a history lesson for all the Patriot trolls that have registered here in the past week.
That may hve been Belichick's fault too. If we hadn't gottent he 1st rd pick for him we may not have used a 1st rounder on Chad(we really only did b/c we had 4 1st rd picks) and who knows if we pick one up for depth later in the draft? It could have been Brady?
He was about to get benched anyway. 5-11 in 2000 and 0-2 to start the 2001 season. Brady would have got his shot in a game or two I think
I think you are right, the rumblings were already there about BB's job and about Brady starting. Mo just sped up the timetable. It may have cost you the '01 season as if he starts 2-3 games later you probably have 2 more losses and w/ that they wouldn't have won the div or got the 2 seed and they may not have made the playoffs so it would have delayed the dynasty.
I think you're right to an extent. If the Pats had started out 0-4 and Bledsoe had continued to play poorly, they may have made the switch to give them a spark. On the other hand, if they waited that long to make the switch their season may have been unsalvageable at that point and they may not have gone on to the Super Bowl that season. If they had finished w/ a losing record, it's questionable as to whether Belichick is even brought back for a 3rd season.
He probably would have been fired within three years. We don't have Tom Brady and belichick has been pretty bad without him. Doubt with his tight lipped approach he would have been able to survive the media onslaught of a year or two of losing.
Brady went in the 6th round, correct? That means the Pats also passed on him probably five times, more a stroke of luck than a stroke of genius. It's not like they traded up to "scoop him up".
