They were all hated by the media by the end of their first TC as head coach. Parcells and Belichik eventually outgrew the hatred because nobody can argue with Super Bowl wins. We'll see if Mangini follows the formula.
I couldn't care less what the media likes or hates. They act like a bunch of 12 yr olds with the way they cry.
Yes, note to Mangini: follow the Parcells model, not the Belichick get run out of Cleveland and then fade away for years before becoming a HC and winning 3 SB for another team.
The one thing that is really different about the two situations is that nobody disputes that Mangini is in control here. Belichik had real veteran problems when he took over the Browns. Bernie Kosar was the man there and everybody in the clubhouse looked to him first when Belichik tried to make changes. I'm tempted to say that the reason Mawae was let go was specifically so that would not happen again.
Mawae was also let go, IMO, because he was the union rep. Now Mangini & Mr. T will never would/can never admit that, but you know that was part of the reason to release Kevin other than his outspoken manner, his diminishing skills and his history of grumbling through the year with Groh.
I would agree that the atmosphere is very different as well. That can only help him in the long run, plus the fact that he comes across as being pretty well spoken and charming when he does come out of his bunker. Something Belichick has never had a lot of - personality. :breakdance:
Atmosphere? Seems like a prison camp, or a gulag from all reports. Different, yes. Better? Won't know until the games are for real. I don't know who you generally listen to, but Mangini is not 'well-spoken'. He sounds like a kid giving a book report!
The one thing about Parcells is he was entertaining as hell when he was in a press confrence. He has a presence about him that is head and shoulders better than BB or Mangini. They may operate the same way but Parcells definetly knew how to charm the press when he wanted to. Mangini can do what ever he wants, in the end how he treats the press probably doesn't matter as long as he wins. On the other side of it, treating the press badly will reduce the amount of time he gets to turn the program around.
The one thing I hope they have in common (and it looks that way so far) is an ability to spot athletic talent... an all-around athlete who can contribute on multiple levels. It's great to hire a Ty Law or a Terrell Ownes, but hell, that doesn't take much insight. But to spot a guy with the kind of overall athletic ability to do many things pretty well and contribute 150% on many levels, that takes a certain vision. I hope Mangini has that.
Well, the media complaining about the team not winning should have nothing to do with whether a coach is fired or not. And I'm not saying it doesn't happen that way, just that it should not. The less time he spends having "press conferences", the more time he can spend coaching, which is his primary concern, imo.
maewae was let go for leading the mutuny in the press and lockerroom against groh. no other tuna guy will touch him. not eric, nor belli, not crennel, not coughlin, not payton.
