Because there's so many needs, best player available. If you look at the Jets cap situation on NYJetsCap.com, it's not cost-effective to cut ties with Mark Sanchez after this season, so I don't think they go after a QB, unless it's a late round developmental pick. I think this season is going to be a rough season (inb4 Captain Obvious), but I honestly think Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez are brought back for one more season in 2013. You most likely have Bart Scott and Calvin Pace coming off the books following this season and assuming next season isn't successful, you can cut Mark Sanchez and Santonio Holmes and save money, then bring in a new coach and GM and allow them to pick their own QB and not have severe cap restraints, a total clean slate. I know everybody wants a new QB/GM and to an extend a new coach right now, but for cap reasons and thinking big picture, it might be worth it to just let Rex and Co. ride it out for one more season. After all, back to back AFC Title games, an 8-8 season and whatever happens this season, coupled with the fact that Woody Johnson loves him, will probably be enough to bring Rex back for one more season. It wouldn't surprise me if Mike Tannenbaum is let go and Woody just elevates Rex to run the whole team (which will probably be a disaster) for a season, but I think at least Rex is back next season and probably Sanchez. But yea, best players available throughout the whole draft. Assuming the Jets continue to move towards a 4-3, another pass rushing DE and MLB would be awesome. A WR and RB also wouldn't suck.
We need to definatly pick up a speedy RB that is promising but we can get that second round hopefully, an OLB would be nice first round (Jarvis Jones). Honeslty I wouldn't mind bombing this season to try and stack up for next season. Also Id rather pick up o-line on FA. There really aren't any RBs that I like on the FA for next year other than Bush. I don't see us signing Bush with all that's been said over this last week tho.
If I had my way......LB(OLB or MLB), S, RB/TE/WR. But knowing our great GM, we will trade up in round 2 by giving up our 3rd round pick and a 6th round pick all to move up 15 spots in round 2.
If I had a say: 1st Round: QB 2nd Round: RB 3rd Round: OLB 4th Round: WR 5th Round: OG 6th Round: TE 7th Round: CB Its obvious that we need playmakers on offense. I think it needs to start at QB. Sanchez just isn't getting the job done, we need to bring in a new body at QB, hopefully a QB like Bray. In the second round, we need to get an offensive playmaker. I think a RB is needed and good RB's can always be found in the second round. OLB is also an obvious need, we need some younger and faster LB's that can rush the passer. WR is also a need. Hill and Holmes are a solid 1 and 2 if Hill ever develops, but after Kerley in the slot, we have NO DEPTH AT ALL. Schillens and Turner? Cmon man! I think we need to take a developmental OG at around the 5th round. Moore is getting up there in age, Slauson is really not that great, and Ducasse fucking sucks. I think a blocking TE needs to be taken in the 6th or 7th round and a CB to add a little depth in the 6th or 7th round as well. Holes like OT and a back up safety or two can be filled in free agency. What we need is young playmakers, we don't have many. I really think we need to load up on young playmakers in this upcoming draft.
With all due respect, it's impossible to state what our 1st 3 draft picks will be, it all depends who is available when the Jets are OTC. You don't reach for a player of need in RD 1, you take the BPA that will fill one of our primary needs. IMO, right now, our top 3 needs are OLB, RB, & WR. Secondary need of TE, MLB & TE
I agree with all of those needs, but if we tank the season and end up cleaning house, QB is arguably one of the top needs. What RB's do you like as of now in the 2-5 round range?
1) I'm not ready to ditch Sanchez just yet, the next few months will tell the tale. For now, I'll leave QB off as a top pick, but it could change. 2) Stepfan Taylor, Stanford is by far my clear cut choice for the Jets. As of right now, Taylor is a solid second Rd selection and is still moving up with quality play. I think he may be drafted in late Rd 1 next April. I also like Eddie Lacy, he's not flashy but a solid looking NFL RB. Lattimore is a amazing player but I'm concerned about his injury history. Bilal Powell needs to be our feature back for the the near future to see what he can accomplish.
You know the season is over when a thread like this is created after 4 weeks. Lol. Anyhow, I'd love if we got Manti in the first round. After that I say LB/RB/OL/CB in no particular order.
I dont really want to give up on him either. Im a big Sanchez fan, but I feel like the best thing that could happen for not only this franchise, but Sanchez himself is to move on. I definitely think that he can succeed elsewhere, someplace that builds a team around of QB. The way this team "developed" Sanchez is sickening. IMO, Tanny has to go in order for this team to take a step forward... Otherwise drafting a QB would almost be meaningless because he doesnt know how to build around a QB and put him in a position to succeed. Obviously, its a long season, but this is a position that can change tenfold within a year. Joseph Randle and Giovani Bernard could be mid round options at RB and would add a dynamic/more explosive element to a stagnant offense. Also a fan of Taylor, think he would be a nice 2nd round pick.
WW85, - can Manti Teo play the MLB spot in the 4-3? Is he fast enough to go sideline to sideline in that D? He certainly has the size & strength to play ILB in the 3-4.
based on sunday our first 3 picks will probably be 4th overall 36th overall 58th overall give or take
Its early at this point, but Geno Smith looks like the favorite. This Saturday's game vs Texas will be an interesting one... Commit Geno-cide? Not that I want to see us lose though, tough situation.
