Hear me out. With Cotchery, Edwards, Clowney and Smith we have a versatile WR corp (Smith is a trick play guy and we still have to see if Woodhead can be a slot). We run a lot of running plays and Keller really isn't that good of a blocker and I think that penalises our team on some plays. Some of us talked about how explosive an offense with 3 WR (Edwards, Cotchery and either a slot WR or Clowney) + 1 TE (Keller) would look once Sanchez truly develops but that kind of offense wouldn't be that good running wise (who the hell blocks for the RB?). However if we draft a good all round TE we have the option to play 2 WR, Keller which essentially would be a really big slot guy and a TE that can actually both block and recieve! That would allow the team to have a strong passing formation but not rule out the run with those players on the field (because all-round TE is better than Keller at blocking and Keller himself is better then a regular slot WR and prob more dangerous in the passing game too). Having said that, do you think the Jets might again draft a TE in this draft? In rd 1 I truly hope not but if Gresham falls to us in rd 2 I'd like it. Is there any TE worth considering in like rd 4 or 6?
TOP 10 SENIOR PROSPECTS: BIG TEN: 10. Michael Hoomanawanui, TE, Illinois, 6-3, 270, 4.77 40: Opposing defensive coordinators hate to game plan against this large tight end even more than they hate to pronounce his name (hoh-OOM-uh-nah-wah-NOO-ee). He has excellent hands, deceptive speed and runs good routes - with the size to be a presence as an in-line blocker with some improvement with his technique. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com I don't care if this guy is good or not... the name says it all !
Sounds like he can block better then Keller. Also sounds like he can be an Alge Crumpler type TE Sign me up
What other holes? we need 2 guys on the DL, maybe a LB, maybe a RT, an all-round TE (Hartsock is purely a blocker) and that's about it. It would be nice to have another OLB but unless Gholston gets cut there is no way we carry 6 OLB into next season.
The other guys are right - we definitely don't have enough picks to draft a tight end. There are bigger needs. A lot positions need depth: Offensive Tackle Offensive Guard 3-4 Defensive Ends Nose Tackle 3-4 Outside Linebacker It'd be a lot better for this team to go out and sign a veteran tight end. Dustin Keller is our future at tight end, but it wouldn't be a bad thing to sign a bigger, experienced blocking type...Hartsock has already played his way out of New York with all of the penalties.
Yeah, we aren't looking to get younger at the Tight End position, we have our young stud in place. We just need to find a quality option, and the only way that we're going to get a truly complete TE is to find one ready to play.
I agree about Hartsock... unless he really steps up his game he's out of here. I also agree on the fact that we'd be better off signing a TE in FA but we really need one and if we can't find one we'd be f*d. I'm not saying we HAVE to draft one, just that if talent falls to us we should take advantage of it. Why do you say we need depth at the OLB position? There is no way we are getting rid of Pace and Thomas (I'd like to give him away), unfortunately we can't get rid of Gholston and Murrell is a good backup... not to mention Westerman can play the position. I'd like to get an OLB but as long as the Ghost is on the team I think we have no room for one. I also don't think we need an OG, Faneca is going nowhere because of the contract (until 2011 he's uncuttable), Moore is solid, Turner is IMO a very solid backup and we just picked up Slauson. That leaves us with a 3-4 DE, a NT and a RT to draft... and we'll have at least 4 picks (I really hope we trade down some in rd 1 to get an extra 3, so 5 picks in total) that's not bad isn't it? My ideal draft would be: (rd 1 or rd 2 of we trade down) 3-4 DE, (rd 2) NT, (rd 3 extra pick from trading down) RT, (rd 4) TE, (rd 6) BPA Of course it depends on who is available, it's just to give an idea.
Because I don't see it only as a backup TE Keller couldn't block my grandma and it'd be a nice to have a TE that can do all... Ps I admit I love 2TE sets...
I think you're missing a big part of the reason the draft exists. We need to fill some spots not to find starters for the coming season, but because we certainly will be needing help in the near future. Once we get past rounds 2 or 3, most of the guys available are long term types. We need to address nose tackle and defensive end for immediate contributors, as well as long term options, which is why we're likely going for them high in the draft. A blocking TE we need now, we don't need a TE for the future, which is why we're going to look there in FA. As for a rush LB, offensive guard, offensive tackle, etc, these are positions that we're going to need down the line, so these are positions to take guys with picks we can use on developmental prospects.
I'm an Illinois fan and I endorse this move. He hasn't gotten a lot of catches because the offense has sucked so bad but he's a pretty good receiving tight end. He is also 270 lbs and a very good blocker. I forget which picks we have but he may be around in the 4th/5th round. Take him after 2 DL and a RT.
I just choose him for the name but I'm glad to see he has some fans What I don't understand is... many fans wanted the Jets to pickup a physical TE in last years draft... since we didn't get one why wouldn't you want to pick one up this time around. It's true that at the moment we don't have many picks but we have more than last year and with possible trades etc etc you never know how many we will end up with ond draft day.
The big thing with this is he must be fast as well and be able to run routes because if you play musical chairs with both TE"s then the D will know whether its Pass or Run..
Do you think that when we DO need to replace a guard, tackle and olb we can just instantly draft players who we can just slot in? Proper list management means constantly drafting guys who will develop into starters in 1-3 years.
Just because some fans wanted a physical TE doesn't mean that it's right. The Jets can end up with all the picks in the world and I still wouldn't see any reason to draft a TE. If they want a blocking TE, they should just sign one that can play right now, no reason to draft a kid late that won't be able to contribute for some time.
I didn't say I wanted a blocking TE, I said I wanted a physical TE. Blocking TE are easy to find in FA because they can only do one thing and teams don't need many players with that ability. Phsyical TE are players that are stronger in the blocking than in the passing game but that when needed can be serviceable recievers. Those TE are harder to come by (at a low price) in FA because teams love the versatilty they bring to the table. PS think of a Chirs Baker without the 3 mill contract
