newsday.com/sports/baseball/yankees/ny-spaquote0218,0,6960946.story Newsday.com A-Rod press conference: Memorable quotes NEWSDAY.COM 3:01 PM EST, February 17, 2009 Alex Rodriguez addressed the media for the first time since his admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs from 2001-03. Below are some of quotes from Tuesday's 35-minute press conference at the Yankees' spring training complex in Tampa, Fla. - "I didn't think they were steroids. That's the part about being young and stupid. It was over the counter and pretty basic. It was really amateur hour ... It was two guys doing a very amateur and immature thing." Yeah just after the "amateur" had signed a very "professional" contract. - "At the time, I had no regrets. It was injected. To what degree it helped? I'm not sure." Nobody has regrets until they're caught. - "We consulted no one. It was pretty evident we didn't know what we were doing ... I knew we weren't taking Tic Tacs." He knew what he was doing wasn't right, but did it anyway. - "To my teammates ... (long pause) ... thank you." For what? Breaking the ice? Say whatever you want about Giambi's "apology" for "doing stuff"... at least you thought he meant it when he said it. - "I'd rather not get into who my cousin is." My cousin A.K.A my invisible friend. Funny how he mentioned his "cousin" over and over when directing blame... but won't mention him when it comes to holding somebody accountable. - "The first thing I say to parents is 'I'm sorry.' God's put me in a forum where I can be heard. I hope that kids would not make the same mistake that I made.' To his parents... "sorry". To his teamates... "thank you"? - "I wish I knew. I was 24 ... 25. I was pretty young and naive. Initially, I was curious because he mentioned it a few times and I just gave it a try." I wonder if felons can use the same excuse? Adulthood and accountability start at 18 for the rest of us. - "When you're 24 or 25 and curious and ignorant, there's a lot of things you don't tell other people and I did just that. You don't want to share everything you do with the public and that's something I decided not to share with anyone." Not sharing and telling a lie are two different things. - "I reached out to Selena [Roberts] last week and we had a very good conversation ... It was a misunderstanding of the facts. I reached out to her and we decided to put it behind us." She's got more info on me... - "The only thing I ask today from you guys and the American public is to judge me from this day forward." Cool, then let's take back the stats and the money and start fresh... This guy is just a complete dick and how any person anywhere can cheer for him is beyond me. He has to be the most egotistical character of all time... at least when a wrestler does it you know in the back of his mind he knows it's a schtick... he's doing it for effect. With A-Rod I honestly believe he has no idea what a dick he is...
What gets me is the media comparing him to Andy pettite. Yes, Andy had a confession about HGH use last year, but there is where the comparison needs to end. Andy has a rep for class and is humble. But they have been comparing the actual confessions and that is not fair. Andy has the respect of the media A-roid does not. A-roid is a premadonna who is out for only himself. What I would like to see is A-roid never getting a ring. That would be pretty poetic for the selfish way he comes accross.
You're post contradicts itself. At one point you knock the media and then you exonerate Pettite because he (supposedly) has the "respect" of the same people you criticize, the media. Fact is media respects nobody. Second fact is that none of these fools deserve respect... they tell the truth only after they've been caught. Andy's rep for class and humble (probably only held by Yankee fans) went out the window when he cheated the game and his fans. I can stand up and say awwww shucks, and act like a dim witted goober too when I get caught doing something illegal... doesn't make it any less illegal or unethical.
It is hilarious at how savagely the media is attacking A-Rod. I mean he could have said he did steroids once like Pettite and then a few days latter admit to doing it more than once. I found nothing wrong with his press conference. Oh anybody who thinks A-Rod should be released is a damned fool! Yeah that's you Bill Madden, Adam Schien, and Chris Carlin!!! A-Rod is still the best thirdbaseman in baseball! I could care less what people think all I know is that in October I will be wearing my A-Rod jersey with pride when the Yankees win the World Series after compiling one of the best seasons in baseball history...All the haters are just jealous.
So you're saying it is perfectly okay for A-Hole to have told us that he and his cousin, Felipe, found some drugs in an alleyway in the Dominican Republic and then A-Hole proceeded to stick them in his ass two times a month for three years even though he didn't really know what they were and didn't really know if they were working or not?
This gentleman is obviously not speaking sense, he just mentioned A-rod and October success in the same sentence. Just like last year, right?
Do you believe he really came clean though? His story seems very suspicious. He tested positive for testosterone, and never explained how. He says he didn't know if it was working or what it was, but he continued to take it for 3 years anyway. This seems like a cover up more than anything.
Ok not that I am in A-rod's corner, but He admitted the use of Steroids, how the hell does that "seem like a cover up more than anything?" The comparisons to Pettite do need to stop. A-Rod knew what he was doing, maybe not the particular drug, but you have to go way more out of your way to inject yourself twice a month for 2 years, than to just mix some shit in a drink, and ingest it orally. so he obviously thought it was helping.
Any of the other 103 players that aren't on the Yankees would be brushed under the rug and scrutinized about 1/100th of what A-rod is going through. How many have even admitted to what he admitted? Even if he isnt giving us all the info on what he did, at least he threw it out there and forever tainted his name and stats. How many players havent even grow the sac to man up and tell us the reason their forehead is so big is they were juicing for multiple years to chase that HR title. Its ridiculous.
I don't like steroids, and I don't particularly care for A-Rod (off the field), but there are very few things that will get a faster from me than moral outrage regarding celebrities and/or professional athletes.
He doesn't have to say anymore than he already has, so I'm not sure why he's a pussy. He got caught, and fessed up. Whether or not he did more steroids and for a longer period of time can't be known for certain. Let's just leave it at that and move on.
thats where it should be left, because i'm sure there are many more names that should be brought to light that aren't on the list.
First of all, A-Rod is one of the biggest stars in the game. Anything he does is going to get a ton of scrutiny. If Pujols were one of the 104, he'd receive comparable treatment. Same with Papi, and same with plenty of other stars. Second of all, McGuire, Palmeiro etc didn't admit to anything, that's true, but they should be criticized for that. What A-Rod did should be the norm...It's like the Chris Rock routine: "I take care of my kids! I've never been to jail!....You want a fucking cookie?" A-Rod cheated and lied about it. He gave a very suspicious explanation only after he had been caught, and he trotted out lame, cliched and insincere excuses. I don't see why he shouldn't be criticized.
when the fuck are they going to release the other 103 players names. how are they all getting away scot free.
Don't count on it anytime soon. Unless it's the MLBPA releasing the names. Anyone else could face lawsuits or jail time.
He said WHAT he did. He stated it was an injection. He also stated he took "RipFuel?" in Seattle. He apologized, hopefully he'll be a mentor for kids NOT to use it... I mean what the hell else do you want? How was he directing blame at his cousin? ARod said he was the stupid one and it's his mistake! He went beyond the SI report of how long he used and he went into what he did in Seattle? Jeez.
