His freshman year, he had a decent line (D. Smith, Urschel, Diffenbach). Between the sanctions and Bill O'Brien's failure to recruit enough quality linemen, Hack got stuck playing behind two of the worst lines in PSU history that started two converted DT's. He took a beating over the last two seasons. To make matters worse, John Donovan was a terrible OC, dialing up slow developing garbage with a line that couldn't block anyone.

Hack needs to improve his accuracy on short throws, and do a better job of throwing the ball away when nothing's there. But he's tough, and has the smarts and tools needed to be a franchise QB. Worth the risk in R2

The only way this is a good pick is if Gailey sees something we don't and Hackenberg succeeds. You don't waste a pick to get leverage against another player.

    why not take a shot?

because the reason this team has bee such a mess is because we consistently miss in the early rounds and arent developing long term starters from picks early in the draft. we have several major areas of need and a core of best players all on the wrong side of 30.

we desperetly need to hit on this guy, otherwise, it just sets us back even further

Then why not take Jeff Driskel in the 7th? He was a high school God who busted in the SEC. You don't waste a 2nd round pick on a huge long shot like Hackenburg.

How many QBs can you say sucked in college and are now good pros?

Agree 100%. "Magic Mike" is human after all, his first awful move as GM. :(

Just read his strengths and weakness analysis from NFL.com.

His weaknesses sound exactly like Sanchez except he actually has more than one year starting experience.

I'd much rather Tom Hackett on this roster right now than Hackenberg

I feel like he could at worst, after sitting the season, is be Andy Dalton. Which is better than anything we have. And hey if Petty gets it, then thats pretty sweet too.

I agree. Those fans are silly. I am not one of those fans. Maccagnan has shown that he is patient, does his research and doesn't act like a neckbeard armchair QB who plays Madden. It doesn't take a genius to see that.

Mac's legacy is forever tied now to passing over Lynch to take Hackenberg, much as the Jets passed over Marino to take O'Brien..what makes it worse is two time SB champ Elway traded up to take Lynch...it will be fun to see how this works out and I would bet it won't take more than a year or two to know.

I don't like it, but with all O guys gone, I guess he was the choice.
Do think it's a mistake, but we will see...
If nothing else it creates real competition at QB. If Petty is any good, this will make him better. If not, Jets got another hopeful in the pipeline.

I see the logic, my real beef is 2nd round on a project. Perhaps the project was the best choice, idk.

PFF hates Hackenberg, so that's one plus.

Jets fans are morons. We already knew this, but the reaction to drafting Hackenberg has been embarrassing to read and watch. The Jets made the pick for a reason. If it works out, they are GENIUS. If it doesn't: then they blew a 2nd round pick. Who cares? The Upside is amazing. The down side is nothing. Hackenberg has MUCH more upside than say a Kellen Clemens or Geno Smith. Don't remember this much negativity around those picks. Crazy.

the browns had a qb competition, so do many teams stacked with awful young projects. it usually doesnt work out so well. hopefully petty can cut it in the league and we can forget we drafted geno and hack
