David J. Chao, MD@ProFootballDoc Good news for @nyjets fans. GENO SMITH plate/screws, jaw not wired shut. Anticipate less than 6-10 wks. Week 1likely. http://nydn.us/1EpMtDS
I definitely think he'll come back faster than expected, but I don't see him playing Week 1. There not just going to throw Geno in Week 1 with no practice under his belt. I don't expect him to be rushed in, and he'll probably more likely start Week 2 if Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't have a good week.
Don't want him starting week 1 without any reps, but happy for him to start week 2. He is still the first choice QB imo, I have faith that the improvement he was showing will count for something.
Geno fans need a reality check. It is Ryan Fitzpatrick's team now. They aren't going to waste a month or more with him just to go back to Geno. If Ryan struggles, Geno may be reinserted. Otherwise, he will ride the bench.
I don't hate Geno at all. He just has proven he is not a good leader or starting QB at the NFL level. He was given a 3rd chance by Coach Bowles and he got his jaw broken in the locker room. QB's don't put themselves in that position. I'm just speaking the truth. The team has moved on. Again, if Fitz struggles, Geno may get another shot. Otherwise, he is done. Just logic. Not hate.
If they really moved on they would had cut him. What part of Fitz 33-55 starting record you like so much?
Its a tough decision man. All the reports were saying how good Geno looked, how he hasnt thrown an INT and how Fitz just wasnt doing enough to pass him. Then I lose a lot of respect for Geno because of this locker room incident. A leader doesnt bad mouth a teammate. A leader doesnt wave his finger in a teammates face and act like an asshole "just because." I just dont understand the whole thing. I dont understand why Geno didnt take it into his own hands and handle it before any problems started, like a professional. I want Geno back because he's young, has promise and this is really his make-or-break year. But im afraid of how the team will respond to him now and how its possible he could be damaged goods. He might jump in too early and be easily rattled if pressure gets in his face. I dont want him to play scared because if thats the case, then hes boned. Take the time, get your head straight, take responsibility and come back when you're ready.
God, this Geno put himself in this position argument is stupid to me. Nobody walks up to a guy in anticipation of getting their jaw broke. He is a human being, the only mistake he made was allowing his emotions to get the better of him and he got into an argument with IK. It happens. I know I've done it several times in life, its the human experience that we all live. Stop feeding into the media drivel, its all garbage. Geno will be the QB when he is healthy, no way Fitz will be able to establish himself over Geno before he is healthy enough to come back. He got punched in the face, he must be a super shitty leader, blah, blah, blah.. He got laid out but a dumbass who attacked an undercover cop before he even got into the NFL. Yet, its all on Geno. Blah, blah, blah... It's stupid.
Geno gonna go HAM this year and shut up all the doubters. He has proven to be a career backup thus far in the NFL but I think he makes the leap to being a quality starter this year.
Fitzpatrick really doesn't have the arm to threaten defenses. I think we can beat Cleveland with Fitzpatrick, because they aren't a strong team but I'd prefer to see Geno play. I lived near Buffalo during the Fitzpatrick years and I saw him play a lot... He's a good backup, because he generally plays smart in terms of when to throw it away and when to tuck and run or slide etc. What always ends up happening is that without the threat of real arm talent, defenses are able to pressure him and eventually shut down the offense unless the running game is rolling. He invariably starts to try too hard to make plays and ends up making mistakes. Granted with him, we wouldn't see any of the embarrassing shit we saw over these two years with Geno.
If anything I think that Geno would make for a solid backup, especially this year. One preseason game isn't enough to make a good judgment but I doubt that Bryce Petty will be ready to step up if something happens to Fitzpatrick. The thing about Geno has been that he seems to have the arm and the skills to be a franchise QB (not on the level of Brady or Manning, but good enough given a balanced offense) and he shows that in practice. For the past 3 years we've heard how Geno makes all the throws in practice and looks so good and then an actual game comes along and he messes up. Granted, he hasn't had a lot of weapons to work with but he has made way too many avoidable mistakes. I've been of the opinion that the guy needs a good sports psychologist or something and he'd be good to go....that is, his problem is mental. Not looking to knock the guy after he just got his jaw busted.....he wouldn't be the first who needed to get his head right in order to perform at the NFL level. I hope we do get him back for game 1....he won't start and Fitzpatrick will be the QB until he messes up too much and Geno is given the green light but at the least he can step in if Fitz goes down due to injury.
Oh yes geno's 11-18 record is so much more impressive. Why would anyone doubt the skill and leadership of 11-18 broken jawed geno?
