I know its coulda shoulda wouda, but we could of had either: Leinart or Cutler (4), Mangold (29), Justice or McNeil (35) OR Davis (4), Addai (29), Justice/McNeil (35), and Croyle/Whitehurst in 1st 3rd and Giles with second 3rd Oh well. One of the key objectives of any FO and scouting team is to try and accurately project how the draft board is going to play out. This is a huge part of the drafting process (sometimes called "game theory" - yes the mathematician from movie Beautiful Mind invented this - and its implemented in all aspects of business and the draft is a classic example - anticipating what your opponents are going to do and deciding whats your best move based on that). Some teams do this better than others - and thats how you get picks that are "reaches" and some that are "high value" late round picks. Obviously you cannot project everything accurately, but you will consistently see certain franchises over and over falling into grabbing "reaches" while others pick-up great players late in the 1st and in the later rounds. I hate the pats/steelers/broncos, but they have done the best of the bunch in the last few years in projecting the draft board accurately. Bottom line, you cannot pick in a vaccuum, you have to be aware and anticipate what the other teams are doing around you and plan accordingly. I mentioned it earlier but when the JETS 35 pick came along and they saw all these top tier OTs left on the board, I think they realized that they did not project the draft board so well (ie. JETS picked-up 2 of the 3 o-lineman selected in the 1st round). Meaning either the JETS was the sole genious of this draft, or just perhaps we missed something.
Instead we went with the best OL in the draft (who had no character questions or injuries), the best center in the draft, and a QB who would have been a first rounder had he not broken his ankle.
We made out OK guys. We got Ferguson Mangold Clemens 2nd rounder in 2007 Don't underestimate the importance of the last item. It's another 400 points minimum if we want to deal up. Ferguson is definitely better than Justice or McNeal.. that's a no brainer, and I feel that difference is greater than Leinart to Clemens... Leinart is darn good, but the media makes him better than he is.
Leinart was not the guy for us....even if we tried to trade up to get him: he would have a hell of a problem in the dead of winter in New York with his so-so throwing power. He is also used to having a lot of offensive weapons around him.
Don't know about Ferguson being better than Justice, but if you are talking about character, then it is a no brainer. Ferguson is the man, but I will tell you this. If Justice can keep his head on straight then the Eagles will have landed a steal with him in the draft.
Eagles got a steal for sure! However, Brick's footwork and his HUGE arm span were major advantages over Justice. The only guy I saw that gave Brick a problem was Daryl Tapp, I saw Justice have quite a few problems throughout the year.
I'm not lamenting one iota over not taking Leinart. He's just not a good fit for the Jets, IMO. He's everything Tangini is trying not to acquire... selfish, high-priced, distracted players with more focus on off-field nonsense than they're worth. Leinart's latest comment only solidifies that conviction... he mentioned something about, "Well, if a team doesn't like my personal, off-field behavior, that's too bad." (Paraphrasing). That doesn't exactly fit the mold of the team-oriented, selfless player we're looking for, one who wants to work hard and concentrate on winning football games. Tangini has been turned off on this guy for awhile. Kudos to them for having the balls to stick to their game plan and take Ferguson and Mangold.
I wish we would've snagged O'Callaghan in that later round, the exact round escapes me but he was still on the board.
With the 35th pick, it is obvious that the Jets wanted D'Qwell Jackson, but since Cleveland took him, they traded their pick away. I thought they might pick up Lendall with the pick, but all and all it was a good move.
I was hoping we could move up and grab Cutler, but the price was too high once Denver got in the act. Getting into a bidding war with them would have been a big mistake and far too costly. I'm happy with what we took instead, especially since we wind up with the Redskins' 2nd Rounder next year. That's going to pay huge dividends for the '07 season.
When we were at 4, I wanted Leinart as well, but about 5 minutes later, I got over it. Our offensive line was the worst in football last year IMO and now we have Kiper's best two offensive line propects on the team. We will be much better in the long run with the draft we had this year. Kinda wish we had made that trade up to 9 to get Leinart though
If I knew a good therapist I would refer them to you. The picks are what they are. You need to move on with life. :breakdance:
Did you guys all see that look on "Broadway" Matt's face as he sat there alone in the back room after we took Ferguson? Talk about a deflated ego. He looked like he was going to throw up.
No. I don't want Brady overrated next year. I wish I knew what everyone saw in him. I watched a bunch of ND games (kind of forced to with NBC covering them) and while his stats were awesome, he's just not that good in my eyes. 1st rounder? Sure, but not top 10...
