getting Jeff Garcia. barring a new contract from the Bucs he said he would walk away from the team... check nfl.com bringing a proven vet into the mix would surely help us out.
Garcia would be a better alternate option than Chad at this point. And I'm not hating on Chad when I say that, just pointing out that Garcia is still mobile and has a stronger arm by quite a bit.
Yeah, but we're already obligated to pay Chad starting money for being a backup. Now we should pay him starting money to be our #3 and bring in Garcia as #2 for even more? I don't think I'd want to have Garcia fill a roster spot and I don't want to cut Chad to make room either. Chad knows our system like no other guy you're going to bring in here and he's still the best mentor (albeit an overpriced one) that you're ever going to see. I suppose you could cut Tui though, but I don't see us needing Garcia at this point. I'm still hoping a decent veteran WR shows up somewhere.
Sorry to say this to a countryman but dude, fix your thread title....and read the sticky, then learn how to do it right....
If the best argument you have is that Chad knows the system, it's a busted one. Garcia has proven that he can step in and learn the system in less than a year. He did it in Philly and Tampa Bay. I listen to interviews with him all the time, and the guy knows football. He's a technician when it comes to this stuff. And his physical prowess far outweighs that of CP. I really don't think there'd be much of a dropoff in knowlege. I would cut CP in a second if it meant we would sign JG. I just don't think he wants to come here. He wants to go somewhere with a floundering QB situation, get the starting job, and compete for a championship. I think Minny would be a good fit for him, but he'd be a great fit for us.
I don't know how to put all this together but... ...Garcia is BY FAR a better QB than Pennington. That I have no argument with. However, I don't think bringing Garcia isn't the right answer. He's a short term solution at this point in his career since he's 38 years old, and I THINK, bringing Garcia for what? 2-3 years? would hurt Clemens progression he's made this offseason. Nothing really prepares you until you get out there on the field, and holding a clipboard will only put Clemens on hold longer til his contract is up, and by that point, we won't have any real assessment on what the kid can do and will probably be forced to let him go. Either way, we'd be at this exact same point 2-3 years down the road with Clemens, wondering if he is our long-term answer. I'm not into looking back and regretting, but if Garcia was at least in his early 30's and he was playing at the level he is on now, I'd do get him in a heartbeat.
im not saying he should be our QB for the next 20 years im saying he would light a fire under clemen's ass for reasons penny won't. clemens did have the worst QB rating in the league last year, and with this apparent win now team garcia wouldn't be a bad choice.
I'm going to have to disagree. One or two more years holding a clipboard for a guy that could win it this year is the perfect situation for Clemens and the Jets as a whole. It gives Clemens a 3rd year of observation (ala CP) and the team a chance to compete right away.
I really don't think our season hinges as heavily on the QB position anymore as it has in the recent past (i.e., as goes Pennington so goes our season). I see this team as broader now in scope. I think Clemens will be fine... I think we can win with Clemens and we can even win with Chad at the position, given all the other improvements we've made this offseason. What I'm trying to say is, the emphasis on the QB postion is not as critical as it was in past seasons. Bringing in another QB and having what amounts to a revolving door policy at QB is NOT what I'm looking for at the moment for this team. If our team is what I'm hoping it'll be and what I'm seeing in the way of talent that we've brought in, we can win with either of the two QBs we've got right now.
I agree to an extent. I know holding a clipboard for a year or two will help him break down offensive plays and decipher defensive schemes, but I guess you can say my hopes are riding pretty high that Clemens can get the job done and shows us he's got what it takes to lead this team.
if jeff garcia becomes the face of the jets i might choke myself to death i dont care for him, never have never will. and with some of the things mentioned earlier about money and chad it just wouldnt make much sense to bring him in.
I'd be very happy (nothing personal towards chad) if the Jets cut pennington and pick up garcia. Garcia is a leader who offer something a little different (mobility) than either chad or kellen.
One of Clemens strengths is his mobility under pressure. I'm thinking he's going to be very much like Jeff Garcia in his prime if he works out. That's another argument for having him as the backup - competition for Clemens at the moment: they can both run the same play book.
As always 227, good stuff from you. I like Garcia but I just don't see him coming here and making an impact in the short term. If Clem beats out Chad we could be set for a great season and having Chad as backup is all the insurance this team needs.
