PICKS BY TEAM W/ COMMENTS: 1. Oakland: JaMarcus Russell QB 33. Oakland: Arron Sears G/T 65. Oakland: Jacoby Jones WR 99. Oakland: Quincy Black OLB COMMENTS: I’m not a huge fan of this draft for the Raiders because I think they should go for CJ in RD1. Sadly, that won’t happen so I had to adjust accordingly. This situation does work out because they’re getting the “best” QB (you all know how I feel about JR) and they’re getting someone to protect him with an upgrade at OL and a WR to provide another endzone threat in case they have a breakdown in their WR corps this year. Quincy Black will also secure their LBers and beef up their defense. *2. Tampa Bay (via Detroit): Calvin Johnson WR 64. Tampa Bay: Doug Free OT 68. Tampa Bay: Quentin Moses DE COMMENTS: I think Tampa should absolutely go for CJ and don’t really blow the piggy bank to do so. They also pick up a good OT in Free to prevent another QB from losing any internal organs. Moses I think is a steal at 68 and a likely pick since they need an upgrade at DE with Rice getting old. *3. Miami: Brady Quinn QB 71. Miami: Sabby Piscittelli S COMMENTS: Miami blowing their first day (for the most part) to get up to Brady Quinn was a good move. They need a QB that they can rely on (and a 36 year old veteran isn’t what they need). They grab Sabbbbbbbyyyyy at 71 which is a nice improvement to their secondary and they’ll use day 2 picks to fix their depth problems. *4. Detroit (via Tampa Bay): Gaines Adams DE 34. Detroit: Drew Stanton QB *35. Detroit (via Tampa Bay): Marcus McCauley CB 66. Detroit: Brandon Siler ILB COMMENTS: Detroit gets a great deal in their trade with Tampa and in doing so acquires Adams and McCauley to fix two major needs at DE and CB. They grab Drew Stanton who is the third best QB in this draft and a LB to complete Ernie Sims from last year. 5. Arizona: Joe Thomas OT 38. Arizona: Sidney Rice WR 69. Arizona: Antwan Barnes OLB COMMENTS: Arizona sits pretty with their picks realizing that they lucked out and in all the confusion, Thomas slips to them. I’m concerned he may be another Robert Gallery, but they risk it. I also read a report that the NEW chin wants to bring in a solid slot receiver early in the draft and that could be Rice. Barnes is a good pick for depth at LB. 6. New England (via Washington): LaRon Landry S 91. New England: Aaron Rouse S COMMENTS: This is a great move by Washington and NE. They both get what they want and NE didn’t really need those two picks since they don’t have too many areas to improve upon. NE moves up to 6 to grab the best and first secondary player in this draft. Landry will create a real problem for anyone that wants to screw around with that secondary especially if they get Asante on the field. 7. Minnesota: Adrian Peterson RB 41. Minnesota: Anthony Gonzalez WR 72. Minnesota: Tim Crowder DE COMMENTS: I read a good article on how Minnesota won’t pass up on AP if he falls to 7. I think him and Taylor will provide a lightning and thunder running game that would be hard to break. The Vikes are weak at WR and DE and Gonzalez and Crowder would be great improvements. 8. Atlanta: Amobi Okoye DT 39. Atlanta: Anthony Spencer DE 75. Atlanta: James Marten OT COMMENTS: I like the idea of Okoye going to play for his old coach to develop him. This kid is 19 and could easily play till he’s 35 giving him a 16 year career. Most DLine’s don’t reach their potential till year 3 and for him, that means he’ll be 22 instead of 25. I think Abraham was a good upgrade for them when they decided to move for him but he isn’t panning out so Spencer is great insurance. Also, Vick needs a better line to protect him. *9. Cleveland (via Miami): Levi Brown OT 36. Cleveland: Trent Edwards, QB *40. Cleveland (via Miami): Zach Miller TE *60. Cleveland (via Miami): Justin Durant LB 67. Cleveland: Ray McDonald DE COMMENTS: Probably made out the best from trading down. They beef up their OL and add yet another name to compete for their starting QB spot. Sadly, they don’t get the hometown boy but do the smart thing by moving down to upgrade the entire team instead of one position. I think Miller is a smart move at TE since a certain someone isn’t panning out and could have a spiral fracture in his leg. Durant and McDonald will be a great upgrade on their defense. 10. Houston: Leon Hall CB 73. Houston: Antonio Pittman, RB COMMENTS: Not too many picks but they made them count. By grabbing Hall their solidify their secondary with a starter. Pittman can leave from Green and take over or split the carries. 11. San Francisco: Adam Carriker DE 42. San Francisco: Manuel Ramirez OG 97. San Francisco: Desmond Bishop ILB COMMENTS: San Fran is really on the rise. I think they have all the components they need to be a great team and we saw that at the end of last year. Each of these picks are great improvements on what they already have and could all walk on as starters. Carriker is going to be a beast in this league.
12. Buffalo: Marshawn Lynch RB 43. Buffalo: David Harris ILB 74. Buffalo: AJ Davis CB 92. Buffalo: David Clowney, WR COMMENTS: I don’t think the Turner deal will happen and Lynch won’t get past Buffalo. Green Bay will have to deal for the time being till RD 2. Buffalo is in a position where they were doing ok at the end of last season and their team being stripped of key players isn’t helping their odds so they use this draft to upgrade. Lynch, Harris, Davis and Clowney all offer starting capabilities and patch up the holes for years to come. 13. St. Louis: Alan Branch DT 52. St. Louis: Marshall Yanda OT 82. St. Louis: Johnnie Lee Higgins WR COMMENTS: St. Louis is one of those teams I just can’ seem to follow. I know they need help at the above spots and Holt isn’t getting younger. 14. Carolina: Reggie Nelson S 45. Carolina: Justin Harrell DT 83. Carolina: Steve Smith WR COMMENTS: Let me start by saying that it would be funny if they had two Steve Smith’s on their team playing the same position that were similar in height. Grabbing Nelson will be a great improvement in the secondary and Harrell will fit nicely. 15. Pittsburgh: Paul Posluszny LB 46. Pittsburgh: Brandon Meriwether S/CB 77. Pittsburgh: Doug Datish C COMMENTS: Pittsburgh skips over Revis to go for the best LB in this draft (arguably). With Joey P. going to Miami, this leaves a gapping hole at OLB that Pauly P can fill. Meriwether is a steal which justifies them not going for Revis and Datish will provide depth for an aging line. 16. Green Bay: Patrick Willis ILB 47. Green Bay: Antonio Pittman, RB 78. Green Bay: Mike Walker WR COMMENTS: GB doesn’t have a bunch of glaring needs but unless they trade up for key players, they should just stay where they are to build depth. Willis will compliment AJ Hawk. Pittman can walk on as a starter if he plays his cards right and Walker can compliment Driver and eventually take over. 17. Jacksonville: Jamaal Anderson DE 48. Jacksonville: Ryan Kalil C 79. Jacksonville: Tanard Jackson S/CB COMMENTS: Jacksonville is like St. Louis. I don’t follow them much so I did this based on what I think would fit best. Anderson falling to them would rock for Jag fans. 18. Cincinnati: Darrelle Revis CB 49. Cincinnati: Charles Johnson DE COMMENTS: Cinci takes care of two huge needs and grabs two non-ex-convict players. Revis is arguably the one of the best corners in this draft and can also serve as a return guy and in Cinci’s special teams, they need it. Johnson’s draft value tipped off for no reason so this is a real steal. 19. Tennessee: Ted Ginn Jr. WR 50. Tennessee: Ben Patrick TE 80. Tennessee: Victor Abiamiri DE COMMENTS: I think the Titans are a force to be reckoned with and all Young needs is a supporting cast to get him to that end zone so doesn’t have to do it all himself. Abiamiri is a nice addition on defense as well. 20. NY Giants: Lawrence Timmons OLB 51. NY Giants: Josh Beekman OG 81. NY Giants: Travarous Bain CB COMMENTS: I am a firm believer that until Coughlin is gone and Reese proves himself, this team is screwed. These three guys will seriously improve the Giants but how they pick on Day 2 will determine if this team is a Wild Card contender or a Playoff contender. 21. Denver: Joe Staley OT 56. Denver: LaMarr Woodley DE 86. Denver: HB Blades ILB COMMENTS: Denver has always been just a few key players away from going the distance and ditching Plumber so indiscriminately was a stupid move. Staley will provide great protection and Woodley and Blades will beef up the defense significantly. 22. Dallas: Aaron Ross CB 53. Dallas: Jonathan Wade CB 87. Dallas: Ryan Harris OT COMMENTS: With the Tuna gone, this draft will make or break Wade. They need to improve their defense and I don’t think WR is a big enough need just yet and it can wait till day 2 where they can snag someone since both Owens and Glenn can hang in there for one more year before they need to start shopping for younger receivers. I know I’ll get criticized for taking two corners on day 1 but the ‘Boys don’t have too many needs and if they have a solid secondary I think they’ll be hard to stop.
23. Kansas City: Dwayne Jarrett WR 54. Kansas City: Josh Wilson CB 84. Kansas City: Stephen Nicholas OLB COMMENTS: KC has a few holes but I think that Herm’s new team is a long way from being ready to go all the way. They do need to add a young large target at WR and Jarrett is a great fit. Josh Wilson would be a nice addition to the Jets but he will probably get grabbed up prior to then. With Ty Law getting older by the minute, he’s not as on target as he used to be. Nicholas will take over for Mitchell who recently left for the Giants. *24. Washington (via New England): Chris Houston CB *28. Washington (via New England): Jarvis Moss DE COMMENTS: The ‘Skins trading down with NE gives them a prime chance to fill their roster with two prime young talented defensive players. I think they should consider trading down pick 24 with Seattle to get more picks and that would allow Seattle back into RD 1. Regardless, I didn’t want to get that complicated and the ‘Skins drastically improve their defense with two starters. 25. NY Jets: Justin Blalock G/T 59. NY Jets: Brian Robison DE/OLB 63. NY Jets: Aundrae Allison WR 89. NY Jets: Eric Wright CB COMMENTS: Some people may criticize me for having Wright so far down but I think that #89 pick should be a corner and not earlier. Blalock as we all have argued will be a great bookend to D’Brick at RT. Brian Robison will provide a great 3-4 OLB or DE that can provide solid run-stopping defense. Allison as you all have argued will be a great WR in this league and should be looked at seriously as our slot receiver. If our day 1 goes like this I think we’re pretty much set for day 2 to do whatever we want. I don’t think we should address DT unless it’s for Adam Carriker – and he won’t fall this far despite what Sportsnation ESPN mock draft says. 26. Philadelphia: Michael Griffin S 57. Philadelphia: Buster Davis ILB 90. Philadelphia: Laurent Robinson WR COMMENTS: Philly is one of those teams that just underperformed due to injuries last season. They need a solid starting safety and Griffin provides that. Davis provides depth at an aging LB corps and Laurent Robinson can take over for Stallworth who jumped ship. Day 2 for the Eagles will make or break their season. They do need to look for a solid backup to Westbrook. 27. New Orleans: Greg Olsen TE 58. New Orleans: Jason Hill WR 88. New Orleans: Rufus Alexander LB COMMENTS: The Saints are a lucky team in that they don’t have too many needs and they can easily be solved on day 1. Losing their top receiver to Atlanta is going to sting but with Colston another year smarter, he can work with Olsen and Hill to rebuild their receiving corps. They still have Reggie Bush as a huge threat so I don’t think their explosive offense is going to dwindle. Rufus is also a solid player that will beef up their defense. I didn’t go corner because I think the Jason David trade will go through. 29. Baltimore: Ben Grubbs G/T 61. Baltimore: Tim Shaw OLB/DE COMMENTS: Baltimore doesn’t have many picks and thankfully for them they don’t really need them. Grubbs can provide the necessary protection for McNair and Tim Shaw can be a walk-on starter to replenish a weakened LB corps. 30. San Diego: Dwayne Bowe WR 62. San Diego: Samson Satele C/G 93. San Diego: Tank Tyler DT 96. San Diego: Turk McBride DE/DT COMMENTS: San Diego got screwed in the playoffs. It’s that simple. I approached their draft from the perspective of “if they had these people, they could have beaten the Patriots.” Dwayne Bowe will stretch the field and Satele will protect Rivers to allow Bowe the time to get open. McBride is supposed to be a solid prospect and can walk on and compete for the starting spot at DE. He’s probably a beta version of Carriker, so that versatility will really help. Tank Tyler is going to be a great player in this league and he can provide the necessary depth at DT With two 3rd round choices they create one of the strongest DLs in the league. 31. Chicago: Jon Beason OLB 37. Chicago: Tony Ugoh T/G 94. Chicago: Kevin Boss TE COMMENTS: The off season woes of the Bears can be solved with their first day picks if they’re smart. They’re having trouble keeping their OLB quiet and Beason will provide them an out in that situation and he can learn from the best – Urlacher. Beason won’t be their MLB but he can become the next leader of that LB corps which has a very strong tradition. Ugoh is a natural pick since Rex can only play QB on certain days and if he had a solid OL he can play on most days. Boss is a solid pick since they passed up on Zach Miller to grab Ugoh. 32. Indianapolis: Eric Weddle SS/CB 95. Indianapolis: Zak DeOssie ILB 98. Indianapolis: Fred Bennett, CB COMMENTS: Indy is in an unfortunate situation since they lost both their starting CBs, LB June and WR Stokely among others. First and foremost they should fix their secondary with Eric Weddle. They’re strong enough at WR with Morehead moving to the slot that they can worry about that on Day 2. DeOssie is going to dominate in this league as we’re all predicting and he’ll walk in to replace June. Bennett can compliment Weddle and really step up their defense as a depth player and probably won’t be a starter for a his first few years. 55. Seattle: Brandon Mebane DT 85. Seattle: Ikaika-Alama Francis DE COMMENTS: I may get criticized for these two picks but let me explain. The SHawks have about 20 guys on roster at the DT position and none of them are great. Mebane can be great and that’s why I took him with pick 55. Losing Kearney is going to hurt a lot as well as Winstrom. Francis makes that bad feeling go away very quickly and can walk on as a starter. Seattle would have benefited from a first round pick this year but they got Branch and thus have no reason to complain about it.
He'll be a guard because: 1. Clement has played better than Moore. 2. That's his natural position. 3. I said so (j/k)
I don't understand Aundrae Allison WR as a "slot" receiver pick when our two starters at WR are probably better suited to play out of the slot. We need speed to stretch the field not another target in the short-intermediate range. If getting another short-intermediate range target is the goal, why not further strenthen the right side of the line and totally free-up Chris Baker from his blocking resposibilities in the pass pro scheme? That's the same net effect, isn't it? I like the Blalock and Wright picks but I'm afraid Eric Wright won't make it all the way to the 3rd round. I like Robison too but given the choice between him at Rd.2 and DeOssie at Rd.3.......see my sig.
I could see him being brought in as Guard and then left with an option to move to tackle as the years progress.
1. Couple points. looks Like jamarcus russell will be ther pick if Raiders stay at number 1.(Love it) A sears in round two wouldn't be bad but i don't see Raiders passing on center ryan kalil if he still on the board. Perfect for Raiders new blocking system and could learn from Jeremy Newberry for a year. IF Kalil off board I could see Raiders going defense with that second pick.(A spencer) Never have enough Pass rusher and you protect yourself IF Burgess is lost to injury. IF Raiders go wr in the third I think they would go for Steve Smith (knows Kiffins offense) oR Craig Davis(Russell familiar with) before they Go Jacoby Jones. JMO I wouldn't be happy picking a LB there. Raiders are fine at LB. They get Darnel Bing back(was on IR) He has a very good chance of being the starting weakside lb this year. Thomas Howard at SSLb(played WLB last year) and Kirk Morrison at MLb. Very fast Lb corp and all those guys can cover. Raiders have nice depth with Sam williams(last year starter at sslb) Robert Thomas- great production last year , Ricky Brown(Raiders love this kid potential) and Grant Irons (more of De but Raiders play him at LB)
NE gets about 200 draft pts in that trade....i'd imagine they would have to throw in at least one extra pick, but probably two for that to happen
Couple things jumped out at me. With Fitzgerald, Boldin and Bryant Johnson I don't think Arizona is spending a 2nd rounder on a WR. Tennesee would have the potential to be scary good in a couple years. As for the Jets, I think Robison is a better option in the 3rd. I don't mind the Allison pick but I'm almost thinking just take Doug Free with the 2nd 2nd rounder and have an offensive line that can be together for the next 8 years. And I still hope DeOssie lands in Green and White.
Interesting mock. "A" for effort just to start... A+ for THIS effort though... I like the trades that occur and I feel they are reasonable, but I don't know if the Dolphins would trade up for Quinn since they need help at so many other spots now (QB,WR,TE,OL,DL,LB,CB,S are spots of some concern). Marshawn Lynch to 12? I'm not sold on him as a 1st rounder anymore. Our Jets draft is OK... Eric Wright and Drae Allison both have character concerns though. I don't know if we'd go for 2 guys with character concerns on Day 1. Patrick Willis to GB?? They don't need a LB at all and he could even go Top 10 somewhere. Buffalo has gaping holes at ILB and OLB... That's where he's going. Interesting spot for Eric Weddle. I might have him becoming a Patriot at #28... Nice call for him to Indy. Sidney Rice to the Cards??? With Boldin, Fitzgerald, Johnson and McCoy??? No way EVER they take a WR in the 2nd. That is their very LAST position of concern IMO. I don't like the Browns going OLB/DE there. They just drafted Wimbly and signed Antwan Peak from Houston. 3rd round is reasonable and every pick makes some sense.. Other than these causes for question, this was a job well done...
I really like the Aundrae Allison & Justin Blalock picks, but I don't know who the other guys are. Also, I think the Bears won't go for a LB in the first, as a lot of the success of the WLB is due to the presence of Urlacher, and they have found replacements for previous LBs in the later rounds.(I also follow the Bears, by the way)
Yes, but in the NFL he lacks ideal height for a tackle and his footwork is pretty suspect. He mainly uses his strength and power to plow through opponents, making him a much better fit at guard.
When it comes to Wright I'm likely the only guy on the board that has seen him play being a UNLV season ticket holder. I'm impressed with his speed which was really showcased at the combine but he was a shutdown CB at UNLV. He was one of the best in the nation in passes not thrown his way. The problem is he missed a bunch of games with a knee injury. Yes there are concerns about his character but he had no isues while he was at UNLV and one would think it might be a little easier to get into trouble in Las Vegas than LA. I don't buy the rape charge but the extasy thing worries me a bit but he knows he made a mistake and I don't think it will be a recurring theme. I do really like his ability to be a punt returner and KO returner which apparently he approached the CS at UNLV about doing and he instanty was the best the Rebels had doing it. (not that being the guy at UNLV says a whole lot) I heard him on the radio the other day and he said the Saints were flying him to New Orleans to meet with him and talk to him. He said that they really showed alot of intrest in him but we all know how these things work. My guess is he is gone by pick 89.
