I saw this mock draft that was updated last Friday 12/14/07. We end up w/this in the first 3 rounds, I'll be pretty happy. With a new young QB, I think WR is a position to address in free agency where we need to find a veteran for Clemens. http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2008_2.php 1st round ---- Chris Long (DE – Virginia) The Jets are 3-10 because Chad Pennington sucked it up the first half of the year, and they have only 22 sacks through 13 contests this season. Kellen Clemens seems to be the answer at quarterback, meaning New York will need to draft someone who can get to opposing signal callers in their 3-4 defense. I know Darren McFadden will be tempting if he's available, but can Eric Mangini really survive another year with his defensive line getting pushed around like 8-year-old girls? If the Jets draft McFadden, they'll have tons of money wrapped up at the running back position, with a ridiculous amount of holes on defense. I think the Jets will think about drafting McFadden or attempt to trade out of this selection. But in the end, I believe they'll end up with Vernon Gholston or Chris Long. 2nd round ---- Quentin Groves (OLB – Auburn) As I mentioned in my first-round write-up, the Jets need to make pressuring the quarterback their priority. Sixteen sacks through 13 games is ridiculous. 3rd round ----- Drew Radovich (G – USC) A replacement for Pete Kendall, whom the Jets traded to the Redskins this offseason.
i'm not all about McFadden, but this is a perfect example of how not drafting McFadden doesn't make the overall team that much better. in this scenario, McFadden isn't available; let's just say he is and we can't trade down, and then we pass on him as this scenario unfolds... neither the OL or DL are really improved here. you can argue that Chris Long helps the DL, but i don't feel he's the proper fit in our scheme which is sorely in need of size. Groves definitely helps the D because he can get after the QB. Radovich should help the OL if he's good enough to start and that's not definite. still, he's one guy. so would you want McFadden AND these two guys or someone else AND these two guys? my point is, all of the holes and needs won't be fixed this Offseason. if McFadden is available and we can't trade down, i think we should take him. whichever way you slice it, we'll only be partially improved on both sides of the ball. i'd rather have McFadden and be partially improved than not have McFadden and be partially improved.
Yes this type of scenario is alot better by NOT taking McFadden. I'm a bit loathed to take a guard in the 3rd though.
1. I pray that we do not take Long. I agree that if McFadden is available you simply HAVE to take him. I'm generally in agreement that RB's are a dime a dozen, but truly special ones are rare indeed, and this guy is special. 2. I love the Graves pick. Day 1 starter opposite Thomas, with Vilma ansd Harris inside, with Barton and Hobson as backups. Thats's an excellent LB group, and would improve all facets of our defense. 3. Radovich is a great pick here. 6-5 and will probably play pro around 320 pounds. He can play LG and RT, our 2 most needed positions on the OL. He's coming from a pro system and should be able to start from day 1.
I'm not, if he can be effective. Guards are taken late first round fairly often. Better a guard than a kicker! Guard is probably our biggest need.
Just for the heck of it, assuming McFadden is not our pick... 1. Quentin Groves - 6'3 254 - OLB 2. Frank Okam - 6'5 320 - DT 3. Drew Radovich - 6'5 305 - OG 4. Jordy Nelson - 6'3 220 - WR 4. Peyton Hillis - 6'2 243 - FB
i like that except i don't know anything about Nelson. and i'm of the opinion that drafting a FB at all is completely unnecessary.
Jordy Nelson was a walk-on at Kansas State, and now he's an All-American. He's a good player, and could be a steal in the 4th round.
Here's a good shot of Jordy humiliating the 2nd rated CB in the country. Nice speed for a big guy... We need a versatile FB big time, and not only has Hillis been opening holes for McFadden, but he's also the teams leading receiver this season. Peyton Hillis More Jordy Nelson
Hey. I love that draft setup too. Except for the fact that unless he comes up w/a helluva combine, Groves is going to fall way towards the bottom on round 1. And a couple of websites (including the one I quoted) say that Groves even falls into round 2. He's had a horrible latter half of season -- yes, due to the injured toes/foot, but still. At that point, it would make a lot more sense to grab D-Mac. It would be a very crowded backfield w/D-Mac, T. Jones & Leon Washington. It is fitting for this organization that we draft a RB w/our 1st pick, considering that we finally hoodwinked another team & pulled the GM move of the year last spring by stealing T. Jones from the Bears for nothing.
Well this isn't a terrible mock but how far will Quentin Groves fall? Chris Long would be a nice addition and Radovich too. I dont mind stealing Groves but I hear he's a top 15 pick, not a 2nd rounder... This draft isnt very accurate also. No way Chris Jenkins slips to round 2. Also, those other mocks are terrible.
Groves has looked completely lost at linebacker since he was moved there, so his stock as a 3-4 LB has been dropping but the 49ers would probably take him at the end of the 1st unless a WR falls to them. I could also see the 'Skins taking him and keeping him at DE.
Well, if the value isn't there for Groves and he drops that far, I'll change it up. 1. Vernon Gholston - 6'4 264 - OLB 2. Frank Okam - 6'5 320 - DT 3. Drew Radovich - 6'5 305 - OG 4. Jordy Nelson - 6'3 220 - WR 4. Peyton Hillis - 6'2 243 - FB
