Saw that about two hours ago on ESPN. The Red Sox would not agree to decline arbitration after this season. What's odd is the Mets won't either, so why not go to a contender? Why set up K-Rod on a team that will finish in 4th when you can set up Papelbon on a team in the playoff hunt?
He also wanted them to guarantee to not pick up his option. He says he'd rather close at this point in his career which makes no sense to me. He's not going to get 8 million this offseason and he may have trouble finding a team that wants to pencil in a 38 year old coming off tommy john surgery as its closer. There's no guarantee the Mets won't decide to offer him arb anyways. This seemed like it would have benefited everyone all around. I don't get it. edit: There are conflicting reports on this. http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/
I wonder if this does happen if it's because the Mets told him they were going to just let him go either way. In that case he wouldn't be able to stop it and the Sox wouldn't have to agree about the option.
Woo-hoo, another guy who's peak is behind him coming off an injury. Let's hope this deal goes better than the last few "low-risk, high reward" attempts.
The sad part is these two "mid level" prospects will probably instantly be the Mets two best prospects.
I was just thinking the same thing.... or what's even worse is they may get thrown right onto the 25 man roster tonight.
right, but they agreed to that part of it. anyway, seems ESPN was wrong. Now they're reporting Wagner to Boston for two prospects.
One of them is supposedly Chris Carter and the other one is "not of any significance". I'd imagine Carter would be on the ML roster as soon as he's officially acquired.
I guess he's telling the public what they already know. He implied his closer is an idiot. It fits in with the "idiots" theme from the first WS.
