I'm not convinced he'll be a stud, but I'm more sure that he won't be a bust, so I went with stud. I think the minimum you'll get with him is average QB, I believe that his work ethic and leadership won't let him fall off as badly as some of the other massive busts at the position.
Maybe the options should read successful and unsuccessful, but the thought behind them is essentially the same
I agree 100% Young is good with the media, has a good work ethic and is a physical freak of nature. Worst case scenario whoever drafts Young ends up with a Randall Cuningham type player, and that's a pretty nice scenario. I think that Young's career path will follow Donovan McNabb's very closely. He will start as a pretty one dimensional scrambler but unlike Michael Vick he will eventually become a pocket QB with the ability to scramble as an ace in the hole.
Donovan McNabb is a good comparison. Its not his sidearm delivery that has me worried though. He seems to have happy feet and seemed to panic while under pressure. 30/40 passes in the rose bowl, I know, and a fine performance throughout most of the game. But on that LAST DRIVE, when he kept scrambling, he never he set his feet when he dropped back. And he did it multiple times. Whether the plays were so designed, well never know. But it worries me. Other than that last drive though, he was very impressive, so IMO, with time, he can be a successful quarterback
Not an over the top arm, made his living running all over the place, no experience in a pro offense, questionable, questionable Wonderlic. EESH. I think it's a matter of where he ends up, and a matter of patience. Steve McNair wasn't a bust, but it took him seven years to develop. A franchise has to be patient with this guy, or has to give him the right system to work in. I'm not supremely confident that he has the tools to succeed at the position. -X-
I had to go with Stud only because the other choice is Bust. I see him being more of a success than a failure in the NFL. I wish some of these "polls" would present other, more realistic options, though. A more meaningful poll might have included "Above Average," "Average" and "Below Average" sandwiched in between "Stud" and "Bust." "Above Average" is my best guess.
If making the Super Bowl was solely a result of quarterbacking greatness, Canton would be paging Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer any minute now. McNair threw 12 touchdowns and 8 interceptions in '99. This is not the same MVP quarterback we saw a few years ago. He threw for 2100 yards, and attempted slightly more than 20 passes per game. Actually, if you want me to nitpick, I'll tell you that Neil O'Donnel actually put up better numbers, and posted a higher QB rating. The Titans made it to the Super Bowl because they sacked the quarterback over 50 times. This response is quite like the "Well, Michael Vick went into Green Bay and beat the Packers." Well, the box score tells a different story. As usual, in this case the quarterback gets too much credit and too much blame. -X-
