I couldnt watchg the game. How was Vilma's performance(he obviously got an INT) - and is he slowly learning his 3-4 assignments. Do you guys think he'll eventually thrive in the new system or will his size concerns turn him into an average player.
pretty average, his INT has a gimme off a deflection and he dropped another INT. Barton showed alot more than Vilma yesterday. Eventually Vilma should do well, the other 3 LB that stand next to him are doing better though.
It was his best performance in the 3-4. Albeit it wasn't great, an above-average performance, and showed some progress... He had some nice stops on Kevin Jones at the line a few times...But on Jones' long dumpoff reception, he faked Vilma out pretty bad then just burned him to the sideline. He overpursued at least 2 times from what I saw... It was great, wasn't bad...Just average to above-average...But he did make a small step forward, and at this point, any small step is great.
You guys act as if Ray Lewis or Urlacher never over pursues on a tackle. On the play with Jones, he used the official to pick Vilma and there should've been help over the top. I think he played great yesterday, he had 11 tackles, an INT, and a GREAT tipped pass on a laser thrown by Kitna in the 4th quarter. I think this was his best game in the 3-4, making a few stops at the line of scrimmage, getting involved in a lot of plays, and making the tackles downfield when our other players were missing them. Please remember that alot of his tackles 10 yards downfield were making up for our DB's like Drew Coleman and Poteat missing tackles.
I think you can tie Vilma's better game to DRob's better game. It looked to me like Robertson was finally appearing to be just a bit more like Warren Sapp than just a Sap. That took alot of pressure off Vilma as the Detroit OL was busying trying to keep Robertson off Kitna's ass most of the day.
vilma wasnt faked out on that play...KJ used the ump to screen Vilma from getting to him....by doing that it gave him more room to run, then he just outran him with the room that gave him
Check out the replay again...Jones juked left then just darted right...Vilma went left for that split second and Kitna hit him in stride and Vilma couldn't catch him... I'm not saying Lewis or Urlacher don't overpursue...But this season Vilma has overpursued alot, that's all i'm saying.
we must be thinking of a different play....the play i was thinking of ended with jones running towards the left sideline
Vilma's best play yesterday was the tipped pass mentioned above. It was a laser pass thrown over the middle by Kitna and Vilma made an excellent play to tip it out of the way.
If you look at that whole sequence of plays, the Detroit CS obviously saw something in the Jets D. two of three of those plays went left for big gains, by isolating the corner. I havent reviewed the tape yet, but I am betting you will find the overload on Kitnas right side, to take away his ability to throw. I would like to see the splits on Kitna/Passes thrown by field area...
Vilma is playing out of position & will continue to get used & abused until they put him at OLB or SS. :shit:
He is not a safety, and his coverage and leadership skills would be a complete waste. If he is so out of position that he is ineffective on the inside even with solid defensive linemen in front of him, it pains me to say that he would be worth more to us in a trade.
