Whispers are he might have trouble in the mangini 3-4....any thoughts on him moving to safety where he can roam the field and fill a polamalu type role
excellent, lets move a pro bowl lb into a position that hes never played before and is not the right physical build for. we've talked about this to death. vilma may have difficulty adjusting, but hell get it. ray lewis had an mvp year in the 3-4 and people thought he might have trouble too. also, we will not be running an exclusive 3-4, we will show a lot of different fronts. asking if vilma will have trouble is a good question, however it has been discussed here thouroughly. however, proposing switching him to safety is preposterous.
even if he struggles in the 3-4 what are we gonna do? it's not like we're gonna get rid of a pro bowl lb cuz he struggles in the 3-4 at first. The only reason i think he might struggle is because he might have to face a bunch of O-Lineman cuz we dont have a clogger.
The fact is, if Vilma continues to develop within his speed, smarts, and toughness on the field, it wont matter what scheme we play..players like him find a way to succeed.
The whole "switch to the 3-4 scheme" is blown way out of proportion on this board. The only problem Vilma is going to have is that he is going to make less tackles because the other LB's are going to make more tackles. Football is football and talented players always find a way to succeed.
What whispers? The coaching staff has been tight lipped from the very beginning, and I think you're just making things up. A LB with the talent that Vilma has should have no trouble adjusting to whatever role they need him to play.
If Martin&theJets is busting on you, you know its has to be bad.... Vilma will be just fine as long as whoever is the DT eats up blockers to let Vilma move.
Whooooooo Vilma Baby!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love this Thread!!!!!!!!! VILMA IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If I've learned anything from Mangini's repetitive drone these past six months, it's that he will adapt his system to his player's strengths and will be flexible in his schemes to fit the personnel. He's not going to pound round pegs into square holes because he's thick-headed and stubborn. At least that's what he says. While he'd like to move to the 3-4 ultimately, from everything we've read, he knows that he may not have the personnel to play 3-4 now. So he's going to mix it up this year for sure. And he's not going to throw a pro-bowl linebacker to the curb because the perception is that he doesn't fit the scheme. The reason he wants smart, selfless players is so that he can switch between schemes based on game situation or opponent strengths. So I don't think they'd ever be an exclusively 3-4 team no matter if he has what might be considered 3-4 players. I would also agree here with a bunch of other posters. Good players make plays no matter what the scheme; mediocre players find excuses.
Ummm, im willing to bet we'll see vilma play safety for a couple of plays this year. If we expect mangini to use crazy defensive looks like we've seen in NE, then we'll see him all over the place.
