Ok..first off..to mr. champ..no..Im not agreeing with you that Vilma sucks.

I had told you and other posters that I wanted to see how this new regime would make some players even better. A few have stood out.

Now to Mr Vilma. Get your darts out and get ready to throw them..Im ready.

Jonathon Vilma is not a star linebacker. He is a very good linebacker. He would be a very good Carl Banks.

He cant read plays until they are 3 yards downfield. The last two weeks, I intenionally watched a replay of the games and studied him.

His play has nothing to do with the 3-4. It has little to do with having a beast of a NT playing for the Jets. Plain and simple..he is fast..but doesnt have a "behind the line of scrimmage" nose for the ball.

His speed allows him to be around a bunch of plays..usually 3-7 yards downfield. He rarely, if ever, is in the backfield or at the line of scrimmage on sweep plays.

The bottom line is that he can have 200 tackles this year..but in no way is he a difference maker. He cant carry a GREAT defense..ever.

He will be a Jet for many years to come..and will be well appreciated. This coaching staff and front office needs a stud..and Vilma isnt a stud.

Not after he was in the league for 3 years though...lol.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I LIKE Vilma...we need to come to grips with the fact that he is not a difference maker though.

i thought he played good yesterday, if not good then better. he was one of the guys to pump everyone up. one play at the end, he hit the fullback square at the line of scrimmage and then made the tackle. it got the whole defense pumped. the same time we actualy started playing defense.

I am no personnel expert, and I hate to make predictions about players when so much can happen in the future, but I don't think that there's much question that Vilma has been pretty ordinary this year, is there?

3-4 isn't working for this group. We were the in the top 10 the last 2 year. It would be great to see once the offense and defence play well in a game.

    Exactly.

And for the posters that blame the 3-4...a star is a star. If it were the system then he would still make a couple great plays a game just because he is one.

He would still find himself in the backfiled two or three times a game.

Now Im not saying we need a Taylor with a Carson. How many taylors have there been..Im saying that Vilma needs another great linebacker. Carson would not have had the career he had without Taylor. Vilma doesnt make the other linebackers better than they are..and thats the sign of a true star.

He isnt a star. Hes good...solid..and needed..but thats it.

vilma is an elite 4-3 MLB and an average 3-4 ILB (as of yet). he's not a difference maker in our 3-4 defense but he was a difference maker in our 4-3 defense (see ray lewis). so either switch back to the 4-3 defense or trade him because he will leave this team once his contract expires. theres just no reason for him to stay here

vilma's too small to play in the middle. he should be switched to the outside and let him use his speed as a blitzer and outside backer. stout guys are needed for the middle of the 3-4 defense.

It takes time to learn a new position. And they don't have the personell at the moment. Give the guy a break.

His tackles for losses when the Jets played a 4-3 were barely visible. For someone with his speed and ability..he never has been great at greeting running backs at or behind the line of scrimmage.

He has been a great numbers guy because of his ability. He is always around the ball. Problem is that he is downfield when he makes his plays. Thats instinct...and its average at best.

I agree with you Jaywayne and I just mentioned it in another thread, Barton has been outplaying him this year. He needs to step up along with the other so called leaders of this defense. You can't just play well when your backs are against the wall....

    Great point.

Now Barton has actually made crucial stops..plays at or behind the line. Barton is a great example.

The defenders of Vilma will say thats because Vilma gets all of the attention..and according to some posts I have read around here..Vilma has about 8 guys blocking him every play.

We seem to forget this kid was a beast in 4-3 when we had j abe, and ferguson.

    He has nobody around him.

Ellis playing average, robertson being tossed out of bounds.

Has Von o. made a tackle this year ? Seriously

Besides barton all we have is vilma and I dont know about you he played darn good yesterday.

Lets get this man a serious nose tackle and then speak until then,

    shhhhhh

Honestly both vilma and barton were non existent up until yesterday. I really have not seen anything from barton in previous weeks that made him stand out. ( vilma either)

First of all he has never been a "beast". Ever. He has been solid.

Perhaps we can wait until his 7th year in the league to find out exactly what we have in Mr. Vilma.

Why would I throw darts? As a NYJ fan I want EVERY NYJ player to be the best so that we can win championship after championship. As for JV U also misunderstood my position. I never thought he stunk all I said he is not the guy that we need at MLB to lead us to the promised land. I said he is was to small & not strong enough to play that position in the NFL which I had gotten from his College coach on a radio interview Coker had with WQAM after that years draft. In fact in hat interview Coker said we should have drafted Wilfork over JV. I wonder where that would have put us today if we had did that. As for JV ability to sniff out the plays by watching him play I realize that his thought process was not up to NFL MLB levels
