Pete Carroll resigned as the USC football coach Sunday to pursue a job with the NFL's Seattle Seahawks, while the Trojans also lost their top choice to replace him.

Athletic director Mike Garrett had targeted Oregon State coach Mike Riley, a former Trojans assistant, but he received a three-year contract extension late Sunday from the Beavers.

"Due to the fact there is a lot of speculation on my future, I want to make it known that I'm very excited to be coaching at Oregon State University and I anticipate doing so for a long time," Riley said in a statement released by the school.

Riley informed USC over the weekend he was undecided about whether to pursue the Trojans' job, sources said. USC officials had planned a second attempt today.

Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Washington coach Steve Sarkisian already informed USC they weren't interested in the job. Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio is interested, but sources said USC officials have reservations about offering him the job. One reason could be Del Rio's lack of college coaching experience.

USC also contacted former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards, who was recommended by Syracuse athletic director Daryl Gross, who previously worked under athletic director Mike Garrett at USC.

Edwards might be the most controversial choice because of his primarily NFL background. Sources said USC is worried it will run out of qualified candidates if Riley officially turns it down. The school has not yet shown interest in coaches such as Stanford's Jim Harbaugh, Boise State's Chris Peterson, Utah's Kyle Whittingham or TCU's Gary Patterson.

Oregon State took the initiative Saturday to keep Riley by making a public offer of a "lifetime contract."

Actually, I bet that Herm would make a good college coach. All the preachy motivation would work better with kids than with millionaires, his NFL pedigree would keep USC's recruiting strong, and the clock stopping after first downs might mean that he'll have a timeout left by the start of the 4th quarter.

please God, make it happen. if the Jets can dominate the Pats for the next decade and the Bruins slap around USC, it will be the greatest decade of my life.

I've always thought it was pretty obvious that Herm was a very reasonable possibility as a college coach, but USC? Unless they are sure that VERY serious sanctions are coming down from the NCAA, USC would be insane to hire him when many college coaches with great pedigrees and recruiting contacts would kill for the job.

Apparently they want another average former NFL coach in the Pete Carroll mold.

I actually think Herm could be a very good college coach. He seems like a very good person even though he was a terrible coach. My bet is alot of parents would trust their sons with him and he has a very likeable personality. I think his background makes him a very good candidate but I have to question if SC would succeed with Herm. He'd do much better at a school like San Jose State or San Diego State where winning is nice but it's not the only thing like it is at USC.

Harbaugh better not leave Stanford or Iggy will be on suicide watch.

Yeah, and the world has been deprived of one of the best sources of post-game comedy over the last couple of seasons. We need Herm somewhere where he can win a game and start preaching to the choir again.

The fact that he has to turn over his players fairly quickly in college would also help him immensely with his huge mental block over developing young talent. Can't play the guys who graduated no matter how much more you like them than your recruits.

San Jose State is too cheap to care for their athletics. Even Dick Tomey was a reach for them, financially that is...

Is there a reason why USC seems hellbent on bringing in someone with little to no college experience

Mariucci coached at Norther Michigan, Cal State Fullerton, Louisville, USC, and Cal from 1978 to 1991, minus a couple years where he worked with the USFL and the Rams (1985-86, roughly). He was the OC for Berkley in his final years there. He actually has quite a bit of college experience.

Herm, on the other hand, only has a couple of years working for San Jose State as an assistant.

    RE: earlier

yeah, Herm isn't the top candidate, but he's one of several people they reached out to about the vacancy. The original article I linked mentions several.

If I were running a college football program he'd be one of the first guys I'd call.

I think he's a laughingstock as far as NFL head coaches go, and I'm glad he's gone, but in the college game, which is 90 percent recruiting, he'd be a star. A guy of his character and quality walking into a living room would be pure magic. He has "preacher" like charisma.

    yes they will!

herm is perfect for me as a notre dame fan it guarantees at least 5 years of mediocrity out there in southern cal.

i dont see him as a good college coach, college coaches push their kids much harder than nfl coaches do. herm doesnt push anyone, in case we all forget his training camp was club med.
