Wow. Cancer maybe? I can't think of too many health problems that would force a resignation. Otherwise it's something REALLY bad/illegal and this is the university giving him a way out. Man, this came outta nowhere....

Urban Meyer is stepping down as Florida's football coach, the school announced on its athletics Web site Saturday.

“I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program,” Meyer said in a statement. “I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family.”

Meyer won two national championships at Florida, and his team will play in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day.

    FULL STORY

He will coach the Sugar Bowl.

These are my exact thoughts. A ton of his players have had run-ins with the law...and they always seem to get off with a slap on the wrist. Sanctions to come?

The university is either in trouble, he's going to the pros, or he's got a serious illness.

    Second one doesn't make sense.

I highly doubt he's about to take another head coaching job, given the way this was announced.

Wow... sounds like he may have some serious illness. It's obvious he isn't taking another head coaching job because if that was the case he'd already be in South Bend. Hopefully he is ok.

No serious illness, bottom line on ESPN says that he has a heart muscle defect which is not life threatening. He will proceed to be involved with Florida in a different way.

something still feels fishy about this

I'm watching USC/BC and instead of talking about Meyer, they're completely ignoring it and talking about Joe McKnight.

    http://www.clickorlando.com/sports/22064093/detail.html

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A source confirmed to Local 6 sports director David Pingalore on Saturday that Florida head coach Urban Meyer, who is resigning following the team's bowl game, suffered a heart attack during the season.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4772952

The problem is not life threatening, a Florida source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. The same source said Meyer will remain in Gainesville in a non-coaching role to be defined later.

Florida will be fine, while they may not have the dominant feel they have now the school will find somebody that will manage to keep them at the high level they were at under Spurrier (excluding Zook years). Any chance the old ball coach goes back home?

Damn, he's only 45 too. I'm hoping he just REALLY wants to coach Syracuse. :)

They're saying he's going to be in a non coaching position with Florida.

    Possible replacements at Florida?

I'd have to think Schiano would be on the short list?
    Maybe Gary Patterson?
    Butch davis
    Kirk Ferentz

Yeah, folks are talking about the non-life threatening heart defect now. I dunno, sounds a little tame for what appears to be a spur of the moment decision. ESPN was saying that he's been contemplating this for 2~3 years, but I think that's a load. If this is legit then I wish him all he best for him and his family, but several yeas of sensational news stories makes me think there's more to this

    from someone on another site:

    1. Mike Shanahan- Him and Foley are supposedly best friends. After Spurrier left, rumors were Shanny were one of the top candidates.
    2. Dan Mullen- Former UF OC will minimize the system turnaround
    3. Bob Stoops- Yeah, he said no to ND, but it's possible he could $ee a few reasons to have a change of heart

I don't know about health issues, but I said he wasn't going to coach Florida next year, when they lost to Bama. With all he was losing, I thought for sure he would leave... I did however cite the ND job as his reason to leave... But im not really surprised.

This is, however, awesome. (Obviously I'm not wishing him poor health.)
    EDIT:

I've been working all day, so I didnt really know too much about the health news.
