    http://blogs.nydailynews.com/giants/archives/2007/01/shockey_declines_pro_bowl_invi.php

An interesting note emerged from the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., this week, where San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith apparently let it slip that both the Giants and Jets have expressed an interest in RB Michael Turner, LaDainian Tomlinson’s impressive backup.

Turner will be a restricted free agent in March, and will get a tender from the Chargers – possibly the highest one which would guarantee him $2.5 million in 2007 and guarantee that the Chargers would get a first and third-round pick from any team that signs him.

“My dilemma is do I want to keep him for a year and have a great backup and then have him walk away in free agency?” Smith told the San Diego Union Tribune.

The Giants are definitely going to at least try to bring in another running back to compete with Brandon Jacobs for Tiki Barber’s now-vacated starting job. So they’d be crazy not to at least ask the Chargers about the soon-to-be 25-year-old Turner, who has averaged 6.0 yards per carry (941 yards, 157 carries) in very limited action during his three-year career.

But before you start picturing the 5-10, 237-pound Turner in a Giants jersey, remember this could just be Smith trying to drum up a market and increase Turner’s value. And what better way to do that than to throw out the names of both New York teams, as he just did.

No way in hell would I give up a 1st and 3rd for Turner. I doubt the FO would either. Not with how they value draft picks.

If they wanted to keep him, A.J. Smith wouldn't try and get a bidding war started.

    He's out of SD...

big mistake if they offer him a high tender. They'll get no activity on him.

Justlike we did with coles (which was a GOOD MOVE, sorry you guys can't see it), youoffer a mid, and generate activity... take the #1.

Are you on drugs :) Just kidding......Coles was worth WAY more than the one we got. They should have put the high tender on him and wound up keeping him.

I don't agree.. not for the contract he signed. Now, we got the best of both worlds as we got him back and didn't have to pay that silly signing bonus.

I'm just not a Coles fan.. maybe I'm biased. Not being a fan is harsh.. I like him, he's a good player... just not a #1.

I liked what I saw from Turner when he ran against the Pats in the playoffs, but not to the tune of a 1st and a 3rd. Or even just a 1st, for that matter.

I think if we get him it would be with our second 2nd round pick or a 3rd. A 1st is way too much. IMO

i feel like we wont get him without giving up a 1st rounder, especially now that their talking about getting a first and third rounder for him, so saying we could give up a 2nd rounder for him seems pretty unreasonable.

weare going to have to give up a lot for him and thats the bottom line, while thats said, i think it would be smarter to try and shoot for Assante Samuels unless he gets franchised, with him AND Rhodes it would really balance out our secondary, and make it easier to blitz with better coverage.

We wouldn't just try to sign him, we'd work out a deal w/ SD so after we agreed w/ a contract w/ Turner SD would remove the tag and we'd send them whatever we agre to. No team is dumb enough to give up a 1st and 3rd for Turner. I can't see us giving up anything higher than a 2nd.

I don't think any team in their right mind will give up a 1st rounder let alone a 1st and 3rd for an unproven back who isn't even a receiving threat. We couldn't even get a 2nd for Jordan when the Raiders wanted him so badly. A lot of this hype is coming from SD who want to get something for Turner before they lose him for nothing next year.

The fact that the Chargers are clearly planning to try to deal Turner should let us know what his real potential is.

LaDainian Tomlinson is going to be 28 before training camp starts next season. That gives him a likely remaining career span of about 3 seasons. If the Chargers thought Turner was really good they'd keep him and not have to go through the process of finding another star back. Clearly they do not think he's a star. If they did they'd either trade Tomlinson at his peak value (a la Marshall Faulk from the Colts to Rams) and install Turner as the runningback now (In Edgerrin James role in that whole scenario) or they'd lock him up to a 4 year deal as insurance.

The Chargers clearly view Turner in the same light the Jets viewed Lamont Jordan, as a talented runningback but not star caliber. Trading a 1st round pick for him would be a terrible mistake.

The Jets would be fools to give up a first round draft pick for a back up running back. Let's look at recent history for RB trades. First rate starters like Marshall Faulk were only able to generate a 2 and a 5. The Colts couldn't give James away. When Jordan was the Jets' back up in a very similar situation, teams were offering a 3 or a 4. If the Jets give up a 1 or a high 2 for Turner, it would be a mistake.

Plus - the "need" for a franchise back is highly overrated. Did you know that none of the top ten rushers in the NFL this year made it beyond the divisional round of the playoffs? I would much rather see the Jets improve the DL and OL. With a good OL, the running back becomes less relevant. Why do the Chiefs and Broncos continue to churn out "top notch" backs? Because these teams have had the top OLs in football over the past few years. Same with the Steelers in the past.

Let's not go gaga over another sexy pick when the smart thing is continue with the building blocks. The DL is in dire need of help and the right side of the OL needs to be upgraded, particulary Moore. I'd much rather see a nose tackle, edge rusher and a run blocking guard added to the team than Turner at this point.

looks like the giants are gonna get him. They're the only one's stupid enough to give a first and a 3rd rounder and a fat contract to a guy who might not even start....

yeah that was smart of the jets in 2002 to give Chrebet the big money long term deal when he was over the hill...that led us to lose Coles and then trade Moss to get him back. That was real smart...that is one of many reasons Boobway is not gm anymore.

I dont think we get turner. He will want a big contract and cost a 1 rounder or our good 2nd rounder. I think we follow the pats way and dont spend that much on players

What?s the big deal with using a 1st round draft pick to get the running back that the Jets organization would want? Look at the two teams in the AFC championship game -- Both teams used their 1st round draft pick on a running back?Anyway, my point is that our team is closer to being good than you guys think and maybe the 1st round pick will get the Jets a decent RB that can play tough. Hell, they might also trade it away for Michael Turner a player that the Jets organization think is better than any unproven RB in the draft?Who knows what they?ll do, either way. Cheer up everyone!

    Peace out.
