UM's Pro Timing Day results are in By Alex Ordoqui Posted Feb 29, 2008 Pro Timing Day at the University of Miami took place on Friday, as scouts from all over the NFL gathered on campus to watch all of Miami's draft eligible prospects work out. CanesTime.com was there and has a lot of the results. Read on for the details of what happened. The Canes hosted their pro day today in front of over 30 NFL scouts. Kenny Phillips, Calais Campbell, Tavares Gooden, Darnell Jenkins, Kyle Wright, Glenn Sharpe, Vegas Franklin, Teraz McCray, Andrew Bain, Derrick Morse, John Rochford, Grant Brown, Ross Abramson, Willie Cooper, and Lance Leggett all participated. Kenny Phillips only participated in defensive back drills, because Drew Rosenhaus thought it was better if he did not participate. He shined in defensive back drills and had a group of scouts praising him after the drills. He showed great lateral quickness and footwork throughout the drills. Calais Campbell looked sluggish in his speed drills, as he is sill adjusting to some added weight from the end of the season. He had a 29 and ? inch vertical, which was 5 inches improved from his combine workout. He mentioned at teams were very impressed with his interviews and work ethic. Kyle Wright continued to shine in his post season workouts, as he had another impressive display. Wright had great accuracy and touch on his throws throughout the day. He talked about how several teams have informed him that they will be attending his private workout in California . San Diego head coach Norv Turner, and Minnesota head coach Brad Chilldress praised him about his performance at the NFL combine. He also ran in the 4.6 range in the 40 today, which was improved from his 4.8 at the combine. Tavares Gooden was also very impressive today as he ran a 4.46 and a 4.50 in the 40 yard dash. He also had a 39 ? inch vertical leap. Gooden is also nursing some injuries, which had slowed him down the last couple of days. He showed today how special of an athlete he is and should be a top 3 round pick. Derrick Morse had a solid day and has caught scouts attention as a 7th rounder/undrafted free agent. He ran a 5.2 in the 40 today and had 24 reps in the bench press. He talked about just getting an opportunity to participate in a training camp. He also downplayed the importance of these kind of drills in evaluating football players. Darnell Jenkins also did not so these drills as a good indication of football skills. He improved his 40 times to a 4.5 and 4..46 today and was solid in pass catching drills. He said scouts have been impressed with his toughness and game speed. He is a candidate to be selected in the 6th or 7th round. Vegas Franklin and Glenn Sharpe were two other Hurricanes that stood out. Sharpe ran a 4.6 in his first attempt at the 40, but bounced back with a 4.46. He showed great athleticism in drills, but he was hampered by a leg injury at times. The reality is his health concerns and going to affect his ability to get a legitimate opportunity. He has just not been able to stay healthy throughout his career. Antrel Rolle, Tanard Davis, Jonathan Vilma, Lamar Thomas, and several current Hurricanes were in attendance today. Despite suffering through a 5-7 campaign last season, Miami continues to have the NFL?s attention when it comes to prospects. The Canes should have 4-5 players selected in the draft and have several others invited to camps. --------- I like Morse as a late round pick. He's tough and ornery and a gamer. I think he may be from Jersey originally, but i am not sure of that.
I still like Campbell a lot. He's got the height and athleticism to be a great 3-4 DE. He's also a smart player and fits the mold of what Mangini likes- he's got a tremendous work ethic. His sophomore season was phenomenal too. We already have Kareem Brown (who is a big time sleeper) but I would not be opposed to scooping up Campbell if he slips.
I think his stock really dropped at the Combine. I wouldn?t eye him before the mid-late 2nd if i?m a 43 team anymore. He looked slow feeted and stiff, nothing you want on a 43 DE. Just look at him and think about him playing in a 43, i can?t imagine that could be sucessfull in the NFL. http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d806e3888
i wonder if signing Jenkins and possibly adding Pace opens the door to take Phillips, or try to trade down and take him. i still prefer Gholston if we do land Pace, but OLB becomes less pressing of a need, thus allowing us to take Phillips. that'd be one tough Secondary to throw against.
I'd take Keith Rivers over Phillips. ILB is about equal need to a safety but Rivers is a much better prospect.
I'd pass on both...and be really happy. I know this sounds bad, but I want a player who sells jersies. McFadden, Mendenhall, or a receiver. This team needs some game breakers on offense. I like Cotchery, but he's a possession guy.
yeah, i can't argue with any of those possibilities either. i have to say, i like what's happening here: our selection options are growing by the day, and that's a very good thing.
I'm not a big Campbell or Phillips fan- I think they are both overrated. But I do think Morse will make it on to someone's roster and become a decent OG. He is hungry. His poor combine could be a good deal for the Jets if they acquire another 2nd round pick some how. I really liked this kid at the start of the season. he didn't have a "great" year, but not a poor one either. his size and work ethic is something that may catch Tangini's eye. I think he has an excellent chance to become a very good 3-4 DE
