Looking for some opinions/thoughts. Tonight's the draft for a PPR league I'm in that will have two starting QBs. Personally, I'd prefer to just have one, but most everyone else wants to try two. Number of other positions and scoring/settings are all pretty standard. Normally, I'd stock up WR and RB depth before taking a QB in the middle rounds, but with two starting QBs, I'm wondering, what should I expect? We're doing a random draft order shortly before the start time, so don't know where I'll be drafting yet. If I get a top 3 pick, I'd feel inclined to take Foster, McCoy, or Rice. I'm tempted to say that my best bet is to take as good as a QB as I can get if those three are off the board, with Calvin Johnson being maybe the only exception. For anyone with experience in a two-QB league, when is the second QB usually drafted? Should I try and stock up on depth before adding another? It's a 10-team league, so there will be at least 20 of 32 QBs picked.
2 QB is the way to go. My league has been doing it since 2007, and 2 years ago we put a flex spot in for ANYTHING. This way it's not all RB's being drafted high. It's a perfect blend of all the positions. Anyway, to answer your questions, the 2nd qb on most teams will be drafted between rounds 3 and 6. It all depends on the user's personal opinion of a QB. Let me warn you though, get a solid backup. In my 8 team league, with only 16 required starting QBs, it's nearly impossible to get a starting backup qb you don't hate. Here are my pre-draft rankings 1-30 for my 2 qb 3 wr 2 rb 2 te 1 q/w/r/t 1 k 2 d league: 1. Aaron Rodgers 2. Tom Brady 3. Drew Brees 4. Cam Newton 5. Matthew Stafford 6. Calvin Johnson 7. Arian Foster 8. Ray Rice 9. LeSean McCoy 10. Chris Johnson 11. Michael Vick 12. Eli Manning 13. Tony Romo 14. Ryan Mathews 15. Peyton Manning 16. Rob Gronkowski 17. Jimmy Graham 18. Maurice Jones-Drew 19. Trent Richardson 20. Matt Ryan 21. Jay Cutler 22. Ben Roethlisberger 23. Philip Rivers 24. Larry Fitzgerald 25. Darren McFadden 26. DeMarco Murray 27. Matt Schaub 28. Adrian Peterson 29. Roddy White 30. Andre Johnson
I guess it depends on scoring, though. Hate to use the cliche, but in today's 'passing league', is that really a good balance of points, particularly when you potentially start up to three QBs with a flex? I guess the remaining positions will ultimately be the difference, but to each their own. That said, with your experience, what's the best draft strategy?
The end result: QB: Cam Newton, Joe Flacco RB: Chris Johnson, Darren Sproles WR: Brandon Marshall, Jordy Nelson TE: Jason Witten Flex: BenJarvus Green-Ellis DP: James Laurinaitis D/ST: Bears K: Lawrence Tynes Bench: Meachem, Santonio Holmes, Dustin Keller, Jake Locker, Shane Vereen I ended up with pick 9 out of 10, so with the big four QBs off the board, I took Cam with my first pick and got Chris Johnson two picks later. As a whole, I like my team, although I took a few risks. Was going to Cutler as my second QB (which could have been great paired with Marshall) but I realized that he and Cam had the same bye week, so Flacco was the best available. I picked Sproles ahead of Fred Jackson, Bradshaw, and Charles, but it being a PPR league should pay off. I'm expecting a big season for Witten with Austin & Bryant on and off injured, although he, himself, has to be ready for week 1. Barely missed out on Gresham and Tamme as insurance policies, so I took Keller. Speaking of the Jets, although I was reluctant to take any of their offense, I couldn't pass on Holmes who I think was a steal in Round 11 (someone took Reuben Randle ahead of him!). I took Vereen for depth, just in case he does get most of the carries.
