Almost ready to happen. http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10500884 The proposed trade would be Twins get Delmon Young, Brenden Harris and Jason Pridie. Rays get Matt Garza, Juan Rincon and Jason Bartlett. Young is an awesome talent but the Rays have plenty of OF talent so I would give them the win in the trade. Garza steps right into the rotation and Rincon would give the Rays an actual reliable reliever. This might eliminate the Twins need for Melky since Delmon did fill in at CF for a bit while Rocco & Upton was out.
This really sucks for Met fans. Minny traded their shortstop. Maybe they have a deal with Mets that includes Jose Reyes for Johan Santana. This is gonna piss me off.
Yes, they traded their shortstop (Bartlett) and got one in return (Brendan Harris) who actually had just as good a year as Reyes did (.286/.343/.434 versus .280/.354/.421, although he played about 1/3 of his games at second base), and had a better year than Bartlett did (.265/.339/.361).
It's worse for Red Sox/Yankee fans than Met fans. If the Rays start getting decent pitching, and their offense continues to mature they could be a bit of a force. Not a "win the division" force, but a "maybe keep an AL East team from winning the wildcard" force. Kazmir-Shields-Garza is a pretty decent top 3.
You have to think this somehow changes the outlook on the Santana trade but I'm not sure how yet. One article says that Young is a natural right fielder and may be kept there for the Twins instead of moving to center. Another says the opposite. I know the Yankees won't trade Cano anymore then the Mets will trade Reyes and really the only teams in this are the Yankees, Mets and Sox. At least until a Cabrerra deal is done.
Agreed devil. They won't be able to beat either of us, but they could become an annoyance. Sort of like the Orioles are for half a season every other year. -------------- In terms of the Santana deal, I think the Twins are actually shooting themselves in the foot. By acquiring a centerfielder, they are pricing out the Yankees and probably the Sox. Neither of us is going to pay multiple premium young arms to get Santana. They seem to be trying to force us, but it won't work. And the Mets have announced that they will not consider trading Reyes for Santana, so the Twins lose there too. They're either going to trade him to a team for lower value than they deserve, or he's going to be a free agent. Amazing. People ripped ARod for appearing greedy, but no one is ripping the Twins for being even worse. The difference is, the Twins have less to back themselves than Alex did.
Brendan Harris was moved from shortshop to second base for the final two months of the season. He is considered a better second or third baseman.
Of course it's a mistake. They're not a smart organization. They're going to lose Santana for peanuts, if they're lucky.
Yes, they really have just about no say in this at all. Only Santana and the team he ends up with have any clout in how this plays out.
I think he's going to Boston. Just a hunch. Boston doesn't want to deal withhim going to the Yankees, and I don't think anything after Beckett really excites them for next year. With Schilling and Manny off the books after this year and a boatload of prospects, I think they'll be more willing than the Yankees to talk big moves. Unless Hank Steinbrenner hijacks Cashman's job and throws them the jackpot. -X-
Rays are also close to signing Troy Percival. It looks like they are at least making an attempt to improve their pitching and becoming that pest.
this trade takes out the mets and maybe red sox, in the santana sweepstakes, since the twins got their starting centerfielder. There's no way the mets pull off a santana trade, we should just hope for Dan Haren or Bedard
