This is a really disturbing trend. There's nothing more deflating than giving the ball back to a team, right after you've stopped them on downs, or they just scored. Last year it was Cromartie and McKnight, this season it's Kerley yesterday. Westhoff is lionized as the best special teams coach in the league, but why do we keep having these devastating breakdowns?
Kerley turned it over once maybe twice last year on punt return too. I was hoping he'd be able to fix that. I don't care if your a threat to return a punt for a TD if you can't catch it. Give me Jim leonhard back who can catch a punt in the middle of a rain storm but can't return it for a TD.
You're right, I'd forgotten about Kerley's fumbles last season. I'd rather have a Jim Leonhard type, who always maintains ball security, than a more explosive return man who is a constant turnover risk.
This drives me nuts. I would much rather have a guy who has crappy returns or always fair catches it but always holds on to it than a guy who gets a few extra yards when he catches it but also has a habit of dropping the ball. Just should not happen period, let alone how often it has happened to us lately (well, last year and one already by week 2 this season, think we had some preseason ones too).
I know the coach is always gonna get the praise and blame of an entire unit but Westoff isn't out there catching the ball. That's not coaching whatsoever. Gargantuan mistake the cost the Jets dearly but unless you're gonna try chalking that up to Westoff not keeping him focused or something then idk what you're trying to say. I mean, he's going to scheme blocks and returns but not catching the ball falls squarely on Kerley there.
