Why is our FO getting all these old players. I thaught rebuilding meant getting young talent for the long term. Before we know it our team is going to be one big stop gap.
For all i know the jets never signed jones, But in getting runyan it will fill a hole on our oline. Yeah its only for a few years but to get a guy of his caliber to help our young talent on the line the jets really cant go wrong. I think this would be a great move.
You cant fill every spot with young players. We need some guys to play a couple of years and help the young guys
Getting hold the fort guys is exactly what I expected from Mangini. This is a two year rebuild. Runyan can keep pressure off by helping to re-establish the run game, that was non-existant last year. Getting Runyan means that we don't have to draft a RT this year.... it can wait until next year's draft. Like BB and Parcells, they have played the waiting game in FA.... the BIG $ guys are gone, and the value guys are left, like Runyan, and maybe Dyson.
We've got 8 draft picks, with more on the way (compensatory). We'll get lots of youth in here. Then in free agency we signed a younger quarterback and a younger LB. The two older guy signings (Kimo, Dwight) and a potential third (Runyan) fill gaps of need that maybe we aren't interested in filling in the draft. I don't think, given the above, we're biasing our moves to older guys...
Great post I was going to post something similar but you seem to have it covered, I will also add that a strong sustem is a mix of young and old, ususally it is nice if old guys are ones that matured here but with a whole new regime we are targeting the best guys that can come in and help all the new systems. It is not like we are signing old guys just to get vets they have a purpose
