So the trading deadline is upon us and with it a major test of the Jets commitment to rebuilding the team and becoming the best team in the AFC East instead of a 9 or 10 win team every other year.

I'm just like the average fan in that I'd like to see the Jets win as many games as possible right now and make the playoffs. The problem is that there aren't any trades out there that are going to make that kind of difference.

In order for the Jets to make the playoffs this year about a half dozen players all need to make simultaneous leaps closer to their maximum potential at once.

QB - Geno Smith has to achieve a consistency that just hasn't been there for him yet in his early career.

WR - Stephen Hill has to become a major factor in games instead of being the invisible man.

LG - Brian Winters has to step up and become the link between Mangold and D'Brick. Right now he's getting picked on, as often happens with a rookie offensive lineman.

RT - Austin Howard has to give the Jets a real surge on the right side of the line. The Jets big runs this year have gone left. That's because the right side just hasn't been there.

The Jets are averaging 5.64 yards per carry around left end. That's ranked #4 in the NFL. They're averaging 3.90 over left tackle, #12. They're at 3.85 to right end, that's #16. They're at just 3.34 at Right Tackle or #24.

OLB - Quinton Coples has 13 tackles and a sack this year. Even taking the injury into account that's not where things looked like they were headed after last season. This isn't fair, because Coples isn't really an OLB, but he needs to figure out a way to step it up.

CB - Dee Milliner and Darren Walls, one of these guys has to step up and become a competent cover corner. They don't need to be good just competent enough that their side of the field is not a hole on the defense.

You can't fix these problems with one splashy trade. You have to hope that young guys pick things up faster than they should. That's what a rebuilding season is all about. That's why next year not only looks better in most rebuilding scenarios but actually is better.

this isn't baseball, trades in the NFL are rare. How many deadline deals have been difference makers?

Its funny you dont talk about the sorry ass safeties we have they are a joke they cant cover or hard hit what they are there for... I tell you this if we dont draft or get two in free agency next year we better blitz with them every single play cuz they are useless in the backfield.

yeah but how often do you see the lead back and prior third pick get traded in week 3 or 4.

its probably best that nothing happens at this point. this is a rebuilding year, everyone understands it and woody needs to listen to idzik who is going to tell him unless it is great value we are not doing anything even remotely stupid.

I'll say it again, when Idzik took over it wasn't w/ 2013 in mind. We have overachieved, his goal was to give us cap flexibility which he has done. His first draft outside of Milliner has been a good one and it's still very early on Milliner as bad as he has been. we have tons of picks and cap room, we'll be contenders next year and hopefully for years to come and if he hit w/ geno and he is a true franchise QB we could be good for a long time.

How'd you like Antonio Allen last week against Gronkowski when Brady threw 17 ball in his direction and only 8 were caught?

    Just saying.

The reason the Jets were soft yesterday was that Milliner couldn't cover his guy at all. Then Walls came in and promptly got torched for a TD as well. This is understandable, they are both young and Dalton is on fire. The Jets need better play out of that slot more than they need better play out of the safeties.

The Bengals TE's came into yesterday with 50 catches on the season and left with 54. Safety wasn't the primary problem on the Jet's D.

He had a good game but he isnt a Nfl caliber safetie and you know that among with landry brother lol. If the front 7 slightly underperforms they get exposed instantly. It aint about the tight end cover its also about the suport on the corners on the deep balls like the one AJ green had cro wasnt on a island like revis he had ( a ghost safetie help over top or well he supposed to since he just watched Aj catch the ball lol)

The Jets need a free safety, there's no question about that one. The guy might be on the roster already among the cloud of CB's all trying to get playing time this year.

The reason the Jets were torched yesterday is the Bengals have big targets all over the field who can catch the ball and Dalton had open sight lanes to play pitch and catch all day. When you have wide open site lanes a big WR who knows how to shield the CB or Safety on his back is going to catch balls all day.

The Bengals OL did a great job of clearing out the Jets DL and LB away from Dalton's primary throws. Nothing the CB can do about that.

This was a bad day for our D front. It showed up big time on the back side. We have issues in the secondary but we could have had a great back field yesterday and they would have been destroyed.

with the NFL - u almost never make 1 deal that rescues ur season and/or puts u over the top.....

IF a deal is made it is likely a special circumstance with a player/team where the player has to be moved and there is a willing partner that can see value in the trade going forward 1,2,3 years.

most trades do not fall into that category but every now and then one might so its fun to speculate.

i guess richardson kind a fell into that categroy for the colts/browns. who knows if gordon does.

Wow IMHO U R making huge assumptions that all the players U mention in your post have good FB skills cause if they do not next year will be just as bad or worse then this year is going to turn out. Right now having seen EVERY NYJ QB since inception play Geno DOES NOT make me instantly think of JWN or even Penny or Todd or VT or even BF just to name a few others who have had held that position for the NYJs thru the years.

The worst part about the secondary yesterday is many times they were in position to make a play on the ball, but for some reason just didn't :breakdance: Not taking anything away from Dalton, who cut our secondary apart, just saying there were a few balls that could have gone the other way. Disappointed about the "invisible man" Hill and slow start of Milliner (young player excuse only can go so far, at some point these guys have to know they are replaceable.)

In the off season we have to fix this offensive line first. Establish the running game first. And cross our fingers a WR with the skill set and character likes of a Larry Fitzgerald lands on this roster.

You listed all the reasons the Jets shouldn't and won't make any trades this year. They are not one player away and are playing exactly how a young team plays with a rookie QB - inconsistent with lots of holes in talent and performance.

The funny thing is that despite all this, Geno is further along than Sanchez was in 2009 with a very good veteran team.

I think he means Brett Favre.

I'm curious as to why he thinks so highly of Pennington and Todd as to not refer to them via initials.

I am still for Josh Gordon. 22 years of age and will be a viable asset for us for years to come. Go get him.
