I was thining about this the other day. The only way the Jets would even start to plausibly think about trading up for the #1 pick is if another team is invloved, similar to the Abraham deal. Let me explain. To simply trade up is a bad move all the way around. It costs us too much and depleats our draft numbers. Our #4 is worth 1800 and the #1 is worth 3000. We would have to ante up some combination of 1200 additional draft points before there would be any real interest on the Texans part. That means we would have to kick in our #29 at 675 points and our #36 at 550. That gets us to 3025 and puts us in the mix, but look at the sacrafice! Way too much, IMO. Then there is this idea. The Raiders want to get our #4 pick. That would cost them their #7 and their 3rd and 4th rounders for a total of 1825. We could then hypothetically give the Texans our, now, #7, our #36 and next years #1 valued at par mid-first of 1000 points. That would put us at 3040 and we would be right there. We would get Bush plus we would retain our #29 pick. We would also have 2 third round picks and 3 forth round picks plus 2 fifth rounders and a 7th. Since you could argue that our 3rd round pick could almost be thought of as a late second round pick, I actually think this is plausible. This is if we really are enamored with Bush and want a franchise running back for the future on our team. We could just as easily take the trade flat out with the Raiders and keep the picks where they fall. Your thoughts?
I'm not as high on Bush as others are and would prefer to stay at four. I would possibly trade straight up with the Raiders and move down to #7 but I don't see them being interested in that....
I feel the same way. Trading down to #7 would be ideal, IMO, but I think the Raiders will just stay put (despite their drafting history) and take Vince Young if he falls to them. It just might happen. It would require giving up an arm and a leg to get Bush, and I just don't think he justifies all those picks. If the Jets were aiming to get him, I suppose I like your (Greenhornet) way the best.
I would take it, I think he could provide the spark that our offense desparately needs and the way you planned it our we would not be mortgaging the future
I think that Bush is a tremendous talent and will be a stud in the NFL but I also think that you scenario would be giving up just too much to get him. The Jets will be able to get multiple starting caliber players in the draft with the spots they currently have. I would except the proposal straight up with the Raiders to move down because it would give us extra picks. It is a deep draft and it can only help us to have as many picks as possible.
That's the way I saw it too. By back loading picks and throwing in next year's first, we minimize a lot of the pain this year, and we would still retain our #29. We could add Mangold at that point and start working on our o-line. I will die if the Jets just buy the #1 straight up without getting another team involved. That would be a horrible move.
I actually think this idea is really good. Keeping the #29 while still getting Bush, AND having three picks in both the third and fourth rounds would be tremendous. Sign me up!
I'm not sure the Raiders want to get to #4. If they're going to trade up for a QB, it's to get in front of Tennessee to take Leinart. Otherwise, they're pretty secure sitting at #7 and getting their choice of Young or Cutler.
No way. Give up next year's #1 for a RB? One who still has yet to show if he can carry the requisite 20 times a game? Not a chance. Throw away next year's first round, giving up the shot at Quinn altogether, for a guy who may be great, but who may just bust big-time? If the Jets even entertained the thought, I would lose all the faith I have so willingly placed in this staff over the past couple of months.
