I was thinking, with so many good WRs available in the draft, someone like Coles may be expendable. In order to get younger, better and get some draft picks, a possible scenario would be to (if we want to get rid of Vilma) trade Coles to the 49ers for ILB Brandon Moore and a 3rd rounder. Then we would also trade Vilma for a 2nd or 3rd rounder too. We could go with a WR early and/or sign a WR like Berrian or Bryant Johnson (who I think could be great as a starter). Moore was moved to the bench after Willis came in, but he is big (6-1, 255) and fast, and had 7 sacks in the 3-4 last year, so he is experienced in the 3-4 defense. And the 49ers would love to get a great WR, and I think we would get stronger on defense, get more picks, and get younger at WR. This of course is only if we want to get rid of Vilma, which is still definitely up in the air, but if we do, I think this would be a really good trade for us and be very beneficial. What do you guys think?
Unfortunately, I see Coles as a guy we want to keep for at least one more year. He's not the greatest go-to guy anymore but he's still solid and anchors whatever improvements we make in '08 on the offense. I'd keep him and build around him. Vilma might be a different story. I've always been a huge Vilma fan, but now might be the time to make a deal, while he's still got some legs and value.
I see 1 more good year from Coles. We should keep him. I've always been a Vilma fan going back to his days as a Hurricane, but as long as the current CS employs the 3-4 D, Vilma has no place here. Trade him for a draft pick - I'd like a 2nd rounder, but I'll take a 3rd rounder. I would like a Brandon Moore here as well -- the guy is a thumper, plus the sacks you mentioned - a lot for an LB in the 3-4. The guy is also from Long Island so it would be a coming home sorts for him. I dont think San Fran is letting him go - he is relatively cheap for them at $1 million in 2008 and he is going to start over Derek Smith who is gonna be 33yrs old. And I highly doubt we'd never get him AND a 3rd rounder for anybody.
That'd be weird to have two guys with the exact same name on the same team and they'd go head to head in practice as well... I doubt both Vilma and Coles get traded, but I wouldn't be surprised if one of them was dealt.
I don't think either Vilma and Coles will get dealt. Vilma needs a decent NT like a Sopoaga up there and a DE to keep blockers off him and he will be fine. I think Coles will stay because it would upset the locker room too much. Coles is a leader on this team.
i think we should sign a wr, draft a wr, and keep coles the patriots proved that there is no such thing as too much talent at the wr position and even with the addition of 2 wrs...we would still have an average wr corp at best injuries happen...especially at the wr position we need the depth and the talent upgrade
Lavernaues Coles is a warrior, and you don't let those guys go. Even when receiver's get older and slower, the best ones learn to compensate through fire and experience. The Jets have too few of these types and you can't replace that just by drafting a young player. Enough with trading Coles.
i dont know about all the vilma bashing, sure he hasnt been as good in the 3-4 clearly but he is a terrific linebacker and no matter what system he is in he can make plays, him and vilma could create a great tandem in the center...they never played too much together so you never know
I agree. Coles has a ton of guts. I would definitely keep him, but I would like to transition him to the slot and bring in a new #1 who is bigger and a lot faster.
