I've realized that there's so much competition & pride amongst the fan base to the point of making it difficult to really sit down and discuss a specific player. With that said no matter which QB we support as our 'front-runner favorite' hopefully we can use this thread to strictly and simply talk about Bryce Petty the person/player (regardless of good or bad) in hopes of learning more about this kid as a quarterback moving forward. The more research I've done the more I've learned. The more I've liked. Many of us (including myself) have spent so much time supporting and believing in Geno (such as myself), criticizing Geno (plenty), either talking up or doubting Fitzpatrick's ability (all of us) as well as defending or questioning the Hackenberg selection (mostly all) etc to the point where it almost feels as if Petty has been somewhat slept on dating back to last offseason. Even myself personally I've strongly supported Geno and have also questioned Fitzpatrick as a starter so often to the point of not expressing my overall thoughts and thought process regarding Petty as a prospect. I think he can become a good one. I've yet to really express my enthusiasm but i really liked last year's 4th round draft pick of Bryce Petty out of Baylor and even more so as of today. I'll admit that I don't know as much as I'd like to know about Petty as a player due to not catching too many Baylor games, but at the same time I now feel as if I know enough to know that I'm very intrigued by the research that I've done thus far on Petty. Had a 4 year college career but i noticed that he only had 14 pass attempts (combined) during his Freshman and Sophomore season's. It wasn't until his 3rd season as a Junior where Petty was given a chance with Baylor. And he instantly broke out as a junior. See below. As a Junior: 13 Games: 250/403 (62.0%), 4,200 passing yards, 32 TD's/3 INT's, QB Rating of 174.3. As a 1st year starter as a Junior; Petty had pass yardage games consisting of 204, 206, 287, 312, 333, 335, 338, 343, 347, 351, 356, 359 & 430 passing yards (10 out of 13 gms of over 300+ passing yards). Put up performances with eight games of 2 passing TD's, four games of 3 passing TD's & one game of 4 passing TD's thrown (threw for multiple TD's during all 13 games along with 0 multiple INT games). Also rushed for 14 rushing TD's on the season. Passing/Rushing combined he put up 46 TD's to only 3 INT's as a Junior. Was the driving force behind a Baylor offensive attack putting up games of 17, 30, 35, 41, 41, 42, 59, 63, 69, 70, 70, 71 & 73 points. Those numbers above. They're all insane. As a Junior his team went 11-2. As a QB amongst the Nation, Petty ranked (NCAA-Division 1): 7th in Heisman voting (Big-12 Offensive Player of the Year), 26th in Pass Completions, 49th in Completion Percentage (62%), 4th in Passing Yards (Derek Car was #1), 2nd in Yards Per Pass Attempt (behind only J.Winston), 11th in TD's thrown (32), #2 in fewest interceptions throwm (amongst QB's with at least 10 games started), his 46 total TD's (32 throwing/14 rushing) ranked 31st All-Time dating back to 1956 & 3rd during 2013. Ranked 2nd in National QB Rating (behind only J.Winston). His Baylor led offensive attack ranked 1st in total yardage, 2nd in points behind only FSU (52.4 points per game) and 3rd in offensive efficiency. As a Senior: 12 Games: 270/428 (63.1%), 3,855 passing yards, 29 TD's/7 INT's, QB Rating of 157.8. As a 2nd year starter as a Senior; Petty had pass yardage games consisting of 111, 161, 210, 223, 262, 277, 336, 387, 412, 416, 510 & 550 passing yards (6 out of 12 games of 300+ passing yards). Put up performances with three games of 1 passing TD, five games of 2 passing TD's, two games of 3 passing TD's, one game of 4 passing TD's & one game of 5 passing TD's (threw for multiple TD's during 9 out of 12 games along with only two games of multiple INT's). Also rushed for 6 rushing TD's on the season. Passing/Rushing combined he put up 35 TD's to only 7 INT's as a Senior. Was the driving force behind a Baylor offensive attack putting up games of 27, 28, 38, 41, 45, 48, 48, 49, 49, 60, 61 & 63 points. These numbers above. They're pretty sick eye openers. As a Senior his team went 10-2. As a QB amongst the Nation, Petty ranked (NCAA-Division 1): 10th in Heisman voting (Big-12 Champion), 18th in Pass Completions, 33rd in Completion Percentage (63.1%), 10th in Passing Yards, 5th in Yards Per Pass Attempt, 14th in TD's thrown (29) and Ranked 8th in National QB Rating. His Baylor led offensive attack ranked 4th in total yards, 4th in points scored and 4th in offensive efficiency. Looking Back: Petty had quite the college career going 21-4 as a starter while finishing top 10 within the Heisman voting as both a Junior & Senior. Led top 5 offenses both seasons. During his two seasons of play he combined for 520 pass completions (62.5%), 8,055 passing yards, 61 TD's/10 INT's (81 combined TD's) with an average QB Rating of 166.0. What I really like about Petty is his ideal size at 6'3/230 (very similar to Brady), has a very live arm in which can make all the NFL throws with velocity, has a great understanding of the game along with not being a stranger to throwing the football while with Baylor. Looks to have nice footwork along with mobility out of the pocket. I'll most definitely root for this Petty kid to have major success every time he sees the field with belief that his potential is that of a Franchise QB.
Many of us are accused of being Geno haters, I don't think that is fair or accurate. Geno has excellent qualities you look for in a QB. He's strong, athletic, he can make all the throws. However, he's not consistent, that's hard to get past. At least for me, coming off of 4 years with Sanchez struggles. Bryce is the same guy, we haven't seen be terrible. I don't recall why he fell in the draft, but he looks on film to be an excellent prospect. He or Hack are our hopes for the future. Geno still has a shot at redemption, but his window is closing with 2 kids with potential right behind him. Whoever shows the most in the next month, should be our #2 going into the season. I think Petty wins the battle, but wouldn't be upset if Geno WINS the job. However it shakes out, we have 2-3 QB'S that look promising and a GM that's not afraid to bring in another every year.
He dropped because he came out of a one read spread at Baylor. Knew nothing of a pro style offense, some high schoolers knew more than him, he couldn't even identify the mike beforehand.
Kids these days. Back in my day we wore beer goggles. I thought Petty looked ok the other night against the Jags. He looked like he still struggles when the first read isn't there. It will take him time to figure that out and make his progressions. As other posters said in other threads, his footwork looked pretty good and that's good foundation to build from. When he was drafted Macc and Bowles said he was a multi year project QB who has the skills to push for a starting job in the future. He's getting better but still needs some work and experience. I love that Petty and Hack are putting in extra work and sticking on Fitz like white on rice.
Size, arm, mobility, ability to stay and take the hit to deliver the ball, it was only 1 preseason game but he looks improved
Jeez, the guy has one okay game and he goes from the cutting block to franchise QB potential. Wake me up when the regular season starts.
made a few really nice throws. did not fumble, did not get INT's, did not puke. I want to see more. But this was ok
Is there a link to the replay of the game? Saw the highlights on NFL.com but they were pretty sparse. Tell you which qb looks good to me is Bortles.
His short to intermediate accuracy are very good but he really struggles throwing the deep ball, something that dates back to his Baylor days and I've continued to see in his preseason appearances (last year and the first one this year). It's funny because it's the exact opposite of Hackenberg, who has good accuracy in the intermediate to deep range but sprays all over the place on short passes. If only one could iron the other out, then we'd have something.
there is a possibility that both geno and/or fitz could be gone next year. they should keep both petty and hackenberg for development. we could always use one less tight end or fullback who rarely plays, anyways.
Didn't he throw 61 TDs in the two years he played and 8000 yards at Baylor? Were they all short passes? Oh, and I didn't see it but he did have a 85 yard td to Amaro today.
His deep ball is a mess. He overthrows them consistently and puts way too much air under some of them. Quoting his passing yards and one practice play isn't a way to refute that.
