Alright this FA period this year is gonna be far from exciting due to our very significant cap restraints. So im getting way ahead of myself here However our cap situation going into next off-season is going to be FAR better. We are expected to have OVER 30 million in cap space (plus more depending on how much the cap increases) before resigning our own ufa (nobody too major either) Current Estimated Cap # for 2013 89 million (with our surefire cuts factored in based on Jetscap data) Current Estimated Salary Cap # 2013 over 121 million Jets UFA Brandon Moore (hes gone) Dustin Keller (who knows) Mike Devito (candidate to be resigned) Shonn Greene (Unknown) Matt Slauson (could resigned long term or replaced by a rookie) Ropati Pitoitua (candidate to be resigned) Now surefire needs OLB (Pace will be cut) MLB (Scott will be cut) Safety (Eric Smith will LIKELY be cut) OL RG/RT (Moore will likely either retire/signed elsewhere, Hunter WILL be Cut) Probable Needs TE DE Although the one big negative is its a very weak and ugly looking free agent class (unless some good talent gets cut), although there are gonna be decent safeties available. Sad thing is regardless of what we do this draft were going to likely have mostly the same needs next year as we do this year (barring Ducasse becoming a beast this year). Decent safeties available - Will Allen Kenny Phillips Bernard Pollard Ed Reed Kerry Rhodes Obviously this is way far ahead, but considering that this FA period is gonna be incredibly boring for a Jet fan, why not
Also figured this is kinda good to post now, since it should factor into how we draft/approach this FA (with the money that we have)
A lot of areas of the team will be determined by player performance in the 2012 season. It's really difficult to say who will need to be replaced/extended right now, especially since we havent had the 2012 draft yet.
Wow, yeah it's far ahead. The Jets could fill most of those needs in the next 2 months and then have new needs pop up due to injury or simply lack of player production at a position we think isn't a need.
The big need next offseason will be resigning Revis. The terms of his contract make it so he cannot be franchised or restricted in anyway. If he is not resigned before the season starts then he can just play out his contract and see how much the market will pay him. Given the influence of Sean Gilbert I would imagine he may want a king's ransom to resign. Its going to be a hard decision. How much do we want to pay to resign the best player in team history and maybe the best CB of all time.
I really dont think we can fill those needs. I mean Safety, we "need" 2 safeties right now. And with Eric Smiths salary ballooning to over 3 million next year, hes gonna be cut. No way are we gonna find 3 safeties this draft. OLB we got nobody opposite Pace, and Pace is sure to be cut. So even if we draft a great OLB, its still gonna be a need once Pace is gone. Again for OL we got 1 guy retiring, 1 guy definitely getting cut, and one guy as an UFA. Thats 3 starters on the OL (all tackles/guards) that we will have nobody locked up for after next season. No way we dont go into 2013 without a need @ guard or tackle regardless of who we draft. MLB we could actually legitimately address this year, although its just as possible we could significantly ignore it if we keep Scott. And with Muhammad Wilkerson being the only DE on the roster, and Pouha being another year aged, its highly probable that we NEED another body for the line. I think most of these needs are virtually guaranteed to be needs next year. wr, hb, corner, center, qb are the big positions where I think its very doubtful for us to have needs, and TE is completely up in the air based on their vision of DKs future
I don't even want to think about that situation. I can see the amount of money he'll demand being just astronomical.
Wow...I just got done writing the Jets 2013 cap situation and I presented an opposite picture of what you show. I don't know where you came up with the $89 mil figure (which surefire cuts? Those cuts will require replacements and come with cap hits).
I'm pretty sure Jetscaps 2013 numbers are wrong on some guys. Sanchez for example is not corrected for the extension. They updated 2012, but left 2013 the same which isn't correct. Edit- yeah I'm right, he updated it on the Sanchez player page, but not on the 2013 overview. Sanchez makes about 4.4M more than it says.
lol I saw that, and both had basically opposite views on it. While its a good point that rookies/fa signings will eat up cap space (thats currently not factored in) guys will get cut/replaced to offset that
This is my 2 year plan to address as much as possible. Of course some guys are pretty interchangeable but if things worked out something like this it would be pretty awesome IMO. Main splash in FA on a guy like Nelson at S. Spend either a 2nd or 3rd rounder on Safety this year on top of that. No more safety problems. 1st rounder on OLB (or ILB depending on the guy) Use either the 2nd or 3rd rounder that you didn't go on safety and grab the best OL available. I think I would actually prefer a guard here because we'll get a better player for our pick on average and it gives us more flexibility to either replace Slauson/Moore next year while letting the Ducasse chronicles sort themselves out before making our long term decision on RT next year. probably spending the 4th rounder on te/de what have you and adding depth from there with BPA. Next year I'm probably going back to LB with the first round or possible DE. This is assuming Ducasse has matured into the future starter. If he hasn't probably going RT 1st round and then progressing from there depending on where we stand. We could always trade back (or trade up mid round picks) this year or next to get a 3rd 2nd round pick giving us even more flexibility to add immediate producers. I think we have a lot of flexibility to address these needs and that's a good thing.
