In this video I share 5 trade back scenarios that I think are possible and realistic. Teams included are the Saints, Steelers, Chiefs, Vikings, and Eagles. What are your thoughts on trading back from either 4 or 10? Which trade back scenarios do you like best? Would you rather stick and pick inside the top 10? As always, I look forward to reading all of your responses!
Great Job Penny- I really would like to get a future number 1- If we can't, I like the Vikings scenario. #10- Hamilton # 12- London and package some picks to get back into the 1st round to select Linderbaum
I love all the tradebacks you proposed with the Steeler one being my favorite. The reason being we aquire a 1st round pick in a much stronger draft next year which has the potential to be a top 10 pick, Connor Hughes tweeted today that he was told that this yeaars 1st round is so weak that Elijah Moore would go in the top 15 this year rather than like in round 2 last year. i would love to move some of our draft capital this year into next as I would argue it makes sense from a long run perspective.
I agree with Noam - the Steelers trade I like. Dropping only 10 picks and acquiring another third round pick and a first rounder next year is worth it. The Jets can still get a top WR or even Linderbaum if they so choose. The KC trade I don’t really like. While it is two first round picks I think it’s a tad too far to drop down.
Nice job Penny. Although I'm not a fan of trading back because the Jets need top end talent, not roster fillers. They should stick to their board because it will be a bad look if these teams take a star at the spot the Jets traded out from.
The Jets are in a strong position right now with two picks guaranteed to pull a good prospect. Ideally they find a way to leverage those two picks into a windfall of young talent. Trading one of them down and coming out of the deal with a lower 1st this year and a couple of later round picks is probably the best way to maximize value. Half of the Jets starting players are subpar at this point. That's why the results on the field have been so bad the last couple of years. This off of a baseline of roughly 5 wins a year before that. People always say that you can't make a bunch of picks work because there are only so many guys who can make a roster in a given year. The Jets could easily replace 20 guys next year and improve the team overall. Trading for future 1sts certainly is one way to leverage value but when you are 6-27 over the last two years in a loaded division it is also a way to maintain an unhealthy parity on the bottom rung of the ladder. The 2022 Jets are much more important to the future of the franchise than the 2023 Jets.
I can respect your stance. There certainly is something to be said for just sticking and picking the best players available.
Great response. I tend to agree that having an additional first next year is a very powerful asset for where we are as a team.
Great video and well thought out. I'd like to keep #4 and hopefully get that edge we need so desperately. Now, if Hutch/KT are gone by 4, then all bets off, and load up on picks. The Steelers scenario is the most intriguing to me. edit: on a side note, I personally would hate Sauce at 4.
Great job as usual Penny! They're all reasonable scenarios. I'd definitely want more from the Saints and Minny for the #4. From the Saints I'd want a 2023 second, or maybe I'd consider a low 3rd. From Minny I'd want a 2nd or 3rd next year in addition to the 3 picks this year. KC does offer 2 firsts, but it's a long way to drop even from #10 for that. Depending on who's available at #4 - if it's an Edge they really like or one of the two top T - I think I like the Steelers offer - we only drop back 10 spots and that should put us in the sweet spot where if they've gotten their Edge, they could maybe get Linderbalm, or the OL from Iowa St., or a stud WR, or a stud LB, and then have the capital to trade back into the end of the 1st to get another great player. I don;t the Eagles offer is enough unless they offer next year's 1st too.
I think the trade back scenario is really between 2 teams maybe 3. Atlanta trading up for Willis makes the most sense. if I’m JD I’d try to do everything in my power to get their 1st next year in the deal. Atlanta - 4th overall + 4th 2023 Jets - 8th overall + 1st 2023 At 8 take JJ and then at 10 take the WR you covet either Burks/Williams/Wilson/Olave
May have been brought up here before but I would seriously consider trading #10 for both GB’s number 1 picks, 22 and 28. Mayhave to give GB a 6th rd pick. Assuming jets get their preferred DE choice at number 4, they could can get still a high end WR/C/DT/CB of of their choices, with the next two picks before getting to the 2nd round. Here you fill up 5 immediate impact players.
Would you trade with Buffalo? Their safety Jordan Poyer is holding out and if Hamilton falls to 10, Buffalo could look to move up for him I’m torn because giving them Hamilton and having to play against him twice a year would suck, but at the same time you could get a lot from Buffalo given that they are all-in
This time of year always seems to raise the level of desperation to push people to consider things that should never be considered, like helping a division rival just for the chance at improving ourselves. Why should we allow Buffalo to get one of the consensus best players in the draft that could torment us for years? Yeah, I know you said the reason is that we would presumably get a few extra good picks, but how many, and how good? And even so, they're just just draft picks, they're not guaranteed to work out. No, I would never consider doing a trade with them like this.
i don't want to trade back. I'd like to think that we're turning a corner and that we won't have the opportunity to pick at 4 and 10 in the future. We should be hunting for high impact cornerstones with these picks, not JAG+. A bit aspirational but Revis, Aaron Donald and JJ Watt (numerous others) were all picked a bit lower than 10. Of course it would be foolish to think we're somehow guaranteed to get guys like that with our picks but the odds are higher than moving back. Think of the transformational value if we get 2 bona fide ballers to our core. On top of that do we really need more draft picks given all the new faces last year, and then this?
That would be outstanding. We don't get tempted to take KT. We get the better EDGE a WR and a 1st next year.
Atlanta could easily be coveting a QB. Arthur Smith wants his own guy and that’s not Mariota. Willis is a local kid. Makes a lot of sense.
