Just now on SNY, Pauline was asked about Braylon and Holmes both being on one year deals and he said the Jets would probably take Demaryius Thomas if he slides to 29 After doing last nites mock with E, WW and GH I see his point ... Thomas fell in our mock draft as well and I had to take him for Minnesota even though the Vikings have like a million WR's ... the value was tremendous in that spot, to the point where I would have been passing on the BAP by a wide margin on my board. IMO he would have been a TOP 10-15 Pick had he not broken that foot. If he's there at 29 the Jets will be staring at the same dilemma, BIG (6' 4"/225), FAST (4.3's) WR in that Andre Johnson mold Those guys don't grow on trees hmy:
The Jets MAY do just about anything at #29. His statement is = to "The Jets may or may not select (insert name here) at number 29" I think these guys are just pulling stuff out of their asses to make their show somewhat interesting.
I could sign on for Thomas. Draft him and then you have Santonio and Bryalon compete this year for a long term deal and go Cotch/Thomas/(Santonio or Braylon) from 2011 forward.
Which, was the primary argument I made for Tate. Though a guy like Shipley could be had later. I think the 'illusion' that we're thick at WR is not quite correct. The problem I have with all of the mocks, is Bradford going 1, and all 3 major QB prospects falling out of the first....which affects who will be there at 29... I'm not seeing it. Cleveland, Buffalo, Minnedsota, hell even Oakland all need help at the position
The problem is that Tate doesn't have elite potential. Thomas does. Tate's a slight reach at 29 while Thomas is a very good value there. I agree with the argument, just not the player.
I was taking him to play in the slot, so schotty could craft a welker style package for him/sanchez...So that you didn't have all outside type guys... I do agree that it's a slight reach..but he could be special in that context.
The only 2 concerns (which are Big): 1) We have spent a 3rd Round pick and 2-5th Round picks on WRs this draft. I understand that both are on one year contracts. I get people arguing with me that we don't need McCourty cause we have Cromartie....again a one year contract. We need more players at CB than WR. 2) D Thomas doesn't know how to run a Route in College let alone the NFL. DHB had the speed, D Thomas has the physical skills...IMO, neither will make it in the NFL.
I agree. If we traded down to the 40-50 range, I would be okay with a Tate choice. I still think that Thomas could work as a rook in the slot. He's quick and very physical.
Everyone's bringing up the fact that Braylon and Holmes are on "one year deals" as if they won't be here next season. Unless they both suck, it makes absolutely no sense that Tanny wouldn't bring back one of them as the #1 next season.
1. Completely agree. Cornerbacks are much more important than WRs, especially for the schemes we run. 2. Completely agree. He could be a stud, but it will take him some time. The good news, is we can afford to wait at least a year with the guys we have, but I imagine we'd be resigning either Braylon or Santonio, and I don't want to lose Cotchery. We're trying hard to win this year. We don't need another receiver. WTF happened to ground and pound?
....and this is why I'm not 100% sold on the pick, if it happens somehow. I'd still rather McCourty or a few others.
lol  Saints (Brees) and Colts (Peyton), that's what happened They drove home the point that its a new league where you may run to win, but you throw to score TD's in bunches
EXACTLY In fact when the season ended Rex Ryan said we are going to be more blanced on offense going forward. He said we had to play it a little more conservative to break in a rookie QB, but Sanchez stopped playing like a rookie down the stretch so he gets a lot more responsibility going forward. Rex said that in Indy before they even boarded the plane back to Florham Park. That doesn't mean we're turning into Air Coryell, but the run/pass will be a lot more equal.
Isn't that what Holmes and Braylon are for? I thought we were trying to win this year. Obviously not mortgage the future too much, but a #4 receiver would never play. Sure, he's big and fast, but if teams were sold he'd be a stud, there's no way he'd be there at 29.
Thats like playing roulette, and putting money on Green. Right now, the NFL rules favor WR's over CB's.
That AFCC game got Sanchez a few more passing plays per game. We're in a rare position where this 1st round pick isn't make or break so the FO might want to look at a project for the long-term. The Jets could bring him along slowly as a red zone target because of his size, speed, and quickness, just giving him a few routes to learn at first. Still, I'd rather have an impact player in the first.
you have no idea how I got skewered on another thread for pointing that out. (Including ***cough***cough***by the guy that pointed out Sanchize is a sophomore)
