I have never done this , and am hearing and reading different options , have any of you done this ? Is it worth staying on 95 longer and hooking up with 64 east at Rocky Mount NC or is that too far out of the way ? Some say to do this others take 95 to I 64 to 158-----thoughts ?
I take it that you're a bit of an old timer. Not bashing the subject. But check this out. http://www.maps.google.com All in good fun. Cheers man!
Vima , I am old and crotchety but can google and ,waze and with my readers or the help of a nurses aid or if I take my medication ,I can still read a map . That said if anyone out there has actually driven to The Outer Banks , get back to me with the driving options as there are a few different ways to go but as I said in the original post is driving farther South on 95 ( more miles ) to Rocky Mount NC than cutting over on 64 a better option than I64 to 158 as those are slower speeds and more congested but less miles ? Vilma or any of you other kids let me know , now back to my nap .
Check the news about the Outer Banks, not sure when you plan to go but no outsiders are allowed in to vacation, major power line was lost and it might be a couple of weeks before it's back in service.
Never driven to OBX from up North, but I live in NC and have driven there many times. First off saying that you are driving to the Outer Banks is like saying I am driving to Long Island how long will it take? Well it depends on if you are going to Montauk, Orient, Westhampton Beach or Hempstead. If I am going from my house (west) - and am going to anywhere North of Nags Hea, like Duck, Corolla Kitty Hawk I will go through Elizabeth City (158) If I am going further South like Ocrakoke, Hatteras go to 64 If I am going all the way south like Emerald Isle, I go through Morehead City (70)
336 You are correct let me be more specific----I want to head to Corrolla which is closer to Kitty Hawk . I have read MANY reviews on how to go , they say that it could be much like the" Long Island Expressway " a nitemare especially approaching Kitty Hawk-----this is why I ask. I have read that it could take 2 to 5 hours on that stretch----my friends go every year and they take the bay bridge / tunnel and say they never really have had a problem, but its one lane each way and many sections including the tunnels so it does not take much to screw that all up . So do I drive farther inland and South and take 64 across , by Tarborro or nearabouts or is that just not worth it ? ps if theres another route Im all ears
I'd say it depends on where you are starting from. I have gone from Richmond on I-64 (VA), and on 460 to VA168/NC158, and have also gone through 64 in NC to Manteo. It just depends on the day. If you are leaving quite early and can get on VA168/NC158 between 8-10AM you shouldn't hit that much traffic.
Bringing some surf fishing gear? I was always interested in heading down there after things die down up here.
OKAY I would be driving from NY---I have friends that drove this morning they left from Rockland County and were on the road at 6 AM they arrived at Corolla after 5 30 PM,,,,thats 11 and 1/2 hours or more and they go every year and it had never taken them more than 10 hours <-----------this is exactly why I am looking for input , but maybe there is no good way to get to that damn area ?
Pretty much true in the heart of the summer. I can get to Wilmington Beach in 2 hours, but it could take me 6 hours in summer to get to Corolla. I would say if you are going to Corolla area - your best bet would not to stay inland and take 64 --- the one lane traffic goes in both directions, so you would still have quite a way heading back north on 12 through a bunch of popular areas.
336 I guess I have to pick my poison ? I will be leaving NY at nite probably around 7 or 8 pm , hopefully that makes a difference . Im hoping that if I leave around 8 pm the latest that I can arrive by some act of God between 4 and 6 am .I know weekend traffic sucks that is why I plan on going on a weekday and at night , any thoughts on leaving at night ? I know people who swear they can do this trip in 7 or 8 hours but I ran into a woman this morning who just got hoe and she went a completely different route, she stayed on 95 but did not go all the way to Rocky Mount and 64 in NC but I believe she got off at 64 in Virginia,,I could be wrong . The weather Guru could probably add some input as he now lives down there maybe I should send up the Bat Signal for Jay Wayne ?
I'd say that later at night the interstates VA 64 and 95 would be better to drive on (not much traffic and can go faster). Are you thinking of going through the eastern shore or is 95 down easier for you?
Left af 8 pm got here at 4 30 am,,,,could have done even better time but I got sidetracked on 13 South and hit a detour that mixed me up . I think not staying inland and going CBBT is the way to get down here but I guess that can also depend on day you are driving and time of day. I saw cops everywhere last nite as the speed limit changes a gazillion times, not many people on the road. Thanks to all you guys for your input .
