I've heard a lot about how bad this team is (which there is no arguing about. That's a fact) but I've also heard some grumbles about this team being destined to be bad over the next few years which I don't agree with. This is 2014 and this is the nfl. You don't rebuild you retool. So here's my attempt to spread a little hope before the holidays.

    1. Winning in the nfl in this era is about the head coach and the qb. Both of which we will have new next season.
    2. We have less holes on this roster than past seasons. Unfortunately the biggest holes we have are the most important in the league today. QB and cornerback. However we have some of the best skill players we have had on offense in awhile (ivory, decker, harvin, Kerley, amaro), our dline has some of the best talent in the league, and I believe our oline, linebacker, and safety units are acceptable with some minor replacements and some better coaching. For the most part the talent upgrade needed is role players that can be acquired in the draft or cheap in free agency while the main focus and money can be on bringing in a QB and corners that can play.
    3. We have a lot of cap room. (I know, I know..that's only an advantage if we spend it).
    4. The examples are endless of really bad teams making quick turnarounds Kansas City's 2-14 in 2012 to 11-5 in 2013 and another good year in 2014.

So that's me still trying to keep hope alive because what else is there to do when you're a jet fan.

Now before I end this I know what everyone is thinking. There are two names that can send us into a longer term turmoil. Idzik and woody so here's my thoughts on them.

Idzik - yes he ultimately has the end say in many key decisions this offseason. From coach to personnel a lot is riding on his choices. I don't believe he will be fired after this season. Should he? Probably, but I base that more on the fact that he probably wasn't the best candidate to be hired more than on performance. Judging him by performance isn't entirely fair in my opinion for two main reasons. He was handcuffed with Ryan and I also believe revis may have been pursued this offseason if it wasn't for woody. How many GM's have been fired before picking a coach? Isn't that one of the main purposes of a gm?

Another aspect of this is. What gm is taking the jet job when he knows the owner would fire a gm before he ever gets to pick a coach and what would look to be the media and fans influencing the decision. A 2-14 season would normally be enough to can a gm but due to all the media and fan shenanigans that have been surrounding Idzik this season there would definitely be the perception that woodys succumbed to the request of outside sources. Not comforting for future candidates.

My advice to Idzik if he's still here would be stick to your plan on building through the draft but rely on the scouts more for personnel decisions and if the scouts aren't cutting it get new ones. Teams have had bad drafts, even the patriots have them so make the adjustments to make this next draft a good one.

My advice to Woody. Stop interfering. When you hire a gm and or a coach hire the best guy for the job and let him do it. No hiring a guy because you want revis out (killing me by the way seeing how he has impacted that patriot defense), no hiring a guy with stipulations like having to keep a coach. Hire him to do the job and let him do it. Put your ego aside, be patient, and let them do their jobs.
