Are we a big market team? All week on NFL radio the talk has been about who the big spenders will be if there is an uncapped year. They keep talking about the Redskins, and they're saying that only about 10 teams will be able to compete because they'll be able to pay more than everyone else. So, without reference to whether or not Woody would be willing to spend that much, would the Jets be one of those teams that would have the financial capability to buy all the best players?
Yes, the Jets would fall in that category. The Skins are the biggest or 2nd (maybe the Cowboys). Remember, the Skins are a cult down in DC, the same way the Cowboys are. Both teams have a NATIONAL following meaning they sell merchandise all throughout the country. If you think it's cool to watch a Jets show or 2 during the week, you shouild go to Dallas or DC. There are TONS of shows about the team. The Skins bring in so much money with their local radio contract, TV shows, etc etc. They also own their own stadium which means they reap the benefits of the profits. So the answer is yes, The Jets are a big market team. However, they are not the biggest in terms of revenue. Keep in mind they split a market with the Giants, who have been here forever.
As I understand it, the Jets are sort of an anomaly. They are a big market team, but have low revenue...due to not having their own stadium (or at least playing in a stadium where they can sell luxury boxes). They are in the bottom third of the league in revenue, but will probably be in the top ten when the new stadium is built.
In NY and HJ are the Giants more popular? I assume they might be, and if so by how much. Also, for all the people on the site that grew up in NYC, what made them become Jets fans if the Giants have always been around? Especially the 50+ guys that would have grown up with the Giants....
It is not really an issue of popularity. The Giants are in the lower half too. Again...it is a stadium issue. All the teams at the top have stadiums that were built in the last ten years. You couple that with a large population center/corporate presence and you have a formula for success. The real "have nots" are Jax, Buffalo, Cincy, Arizona, Indy, Minn, etc.
As DbJ said, both the Jets and Giants are in the mid-to-low revenue category until a new stadium is built (which, by the way, shows how ridiculous all of the angst about being second class citizens to the Giants in Giants Stadium is - in what counts, the Giants are second class citizens too). As to why I became a Jet fan (being in that 50+ category, although just barely), it is precisely because they were the new team in town, and that appealed to me. Where they played also tied in well with me being a Met fan (growing up, everyone I knew was either Yankee/Giant or Met/Jet), since they were the Long Island teams (I became an Islander fan in 1972 for the same reasons). The Mets and Jets were vastly more hip and cool than were the Yankees and Giants in the mid-to-late sixties.
^what they said. And im a jetsfan because of my father, he liked the underdogs when it comes to football, but baseball he loved the best, he also is from the bronx so yankees rule.
Pretty much exactly the same way I became a Mets/Jets/Islander fan. Becoming a Mets fan first. Although I never was a Nets fan even when they had Dr. J. I agree the Jets/Mets were a lot more cool in the early 70's and late 60's. The Yankees and Giants were much more the establishment teams back then. I still remember many years where the biggest game of the season was the Jet/Giant pre-season game.
The Giants have been around longer but the Jets have a strong following. The problem with the Jets is they have played in GIANTS STADIUM for over 20 years. It's a Long Island/Queens based team playing in East Rutherford,New Jersey. When you approach the stadium, you can't miss the words GIANTS STADIUM.The team has no identity. This proposed new stadium is a disaster in waiting.Hopefully Woody comes to his senses and realizes sharing a stadium with the Giants is ridiculous I started watching the Jets when the New York Sack Exchange was in play-Mark Gastineau-Marty Lyons-Abdul Salaam/Ben Rudolph-Joe Klecko.Richard Todd playing with bad ribs in 1981 against the Fish. When he led the Jets to a GW TD drive-Jerome Barkum. That year, they lost to Buffalo in the playoffs when the Bills DB intercepted Todd in the endzone with no time remaining in the game
Just think population & it is easy to define big from small. NYC/Chic=big Bflo= small, GB=small. Then you have some mid sizes also such as maybe Carolina type. Think of the teams who OWN stadiums NOW like Wash & you get ultra big
it doesn't have anything to do w/ a Nat'l following it has to do w/ Stadium deals and Wash has the best in the league. Us and the Giants are mid of the pack unbtil we gte the new Stadium, had we gotten the WSS we would have been #1 by far.
I would say the Giants have a sligtly bigger fan base based on the fact they were around for 50 more years than the Jets but the jets have certainly closed the gap and the gap isn't very big now. We get better TV ratings, we hold the record for largest crowd at Giants Stadium.
No you are not. Big market teams are in order: Redskins Cowboys Texans Patriots Eagles Broncos.... The Jets Rank: 22nd in revenue 22nd in value 21st in amount of debt(21 teams have more debt than the JETS) and the 15th most expensive club to operate Given the bad terms of your current stadium lease this is below what the JETS should earn. With the new joint stadium and more favorable lease you can expect your value to increase in the next few years. http://www.theredzone.org/teamvalue.asp?Order=Rank
