Time to vent, Blitz Blitz Blitz. Damn. Did Sutton and Mangini not notice that by the 4th quarter every time the blitzed the could not touch Brady. It left single coverage for the wideouts to pick up easy yards, the type that keep a drive alive. I know he's done great all year, be these are thinks that he needs to work on for next year. You HAVE to be able to change things mid game. They picked up the blitz every time and guys were left open. This killed us today but i had to point it out because no one had mentioned it. we had a great season. better luck next year
Did you also notice that when we didn't blitz we also got no pressure and he still found open receivers?
They needed to blitz, but they had to mix it up, like against the Texan's where Kerry faked a blitz and got an INT, also I was predicting that one of those stupid little screen passes would get tipped and become a fumble........ I thought they should have spread the field a bit more on the goal line, they kept running it and getting stuffed, I actually thoguht the defense played great considering the circumstances (they did really good on goal line stands IMO.......... Oh well..... theres always next year
I agree that this game really highlighted the lack of experience on the Jets CS. They called a game like they were as good as or a better team then the Patriots when that clearly wasn't the case. This game screamed for some creativity or trickery and it was business as usual with no adjustments from the coordinators.
Im sure this will be fixed next year. When we didnt blitz, Brady had plenty of time in the pocket and he can definitely find a weakness if he is left with time.
The real problem today was that the Patriots just manhandled the Jets at the line of scrimmage. It wasn't as bad on defense as it was on offense, but the facts are that no gameplan survives contact with a more skilled, experienced and larger enemy, and that's what the Jets faced today. D'Brickashaw Ferguson was drafted to hold out the speedy defensive ends who dominate the 4-3 environment. He is not going to do all that well against the huge defensive ends in the odd 3-4 the Jets run up against. Brandon Moore is an ok journeyman at right guard but he's not going to be able to handle every down assignments against people like Wilfork and Vrabel. he's just not large enough and he does not have D'Brick's quickness to somewhat compensate either. The Jets ran into a healthy Patriot defensive line and the gameplan, which was clearly misdirection oriented, held up until late in the game when the Jets made a few mistakes and suddenly wore down on offense. I had some issues with the playcalling on offense but I had no problem with the constant blitzing on defense, that's what kept the Jets in the game.
A blitz got home ONCE today and the Pats were something like 11-16 on 3rd down conversions. Worse then not getting sacks, often times they couldn't even get a push against the Patriot OL when they were sending 6 or 7 guys. Even if you rushed 3 or 4 and just had the extra guys sitting back doing nothing you've got to think they Jets would've had a little more success maybe getting a hand on a ball or forcing a drop after a hit.
The Blitz worked when it was the all out, bring the kitchen sink kind, but I think we only did that once during the game. The other adjustment I wished they had made earleir would have been to cut trying to pound Leon up the middle on the run, when he's a far more effective and creative runner on the outside.
New England's backs caught 2 balls today. The tight ends caught 5 for 25 yards. That's what the blitzing did, and without it you'd have seen Brady absolutely pick the Jets to death with passes over the middle. There's no question in my mind that the Jets did what they needed to do on defense today. The offense just could not convert opportunities in the red zone into touchdowns and made a key error at a crucial point in the game. The defense did what it needed to do.
Thats why you take a season like this and say we overachieved. There are still a good number pieces that needed to be added to this puzzle. As far as sitting back, I dont think you could have done that. We rushed 3 a couple times..and still he had success over the middle. When you have linebackers that cant cover the pass..and just decent CB's, this is what you get. Everyone around here, including me when we got Ty Law, thought that maybe a shutdown CB was overated and a thing of the past. Well, we dont have a CB that can shutdown receivers like that...and no team has one when you allow a QB 2 minutes to find a receiver.
It certainly couldn't have been any worse then what they did. I was looking for a change, any change and all I saw all game long was those blitzes that couldn't even break through the OL on 3rd and long.
It could have been a lot worse. New England only wound up with the huge margin in the last 4 minutes of the game. This was a one score game for most of the game. That's because the Jets kept Brady under enough pressure that he was not marching down the field at will the way he usually does. The thing that caused this loss, if anything is the biggest reason, is that the Jets made Mike Nugent kick two short field goals after getting into the redzone. The Jets still have trouble finishing against a strong defense, and that's a characteristic that has been around since Chad took over. We did not have the specific red zone problems that we have now when Vinny was the QB. Vinny did throw twice as many picks as Chad elsewhere in the field but he also threw into the endzone with authority, something that is largely absent from Chad's game. That's just the way it is.
thats a great post. it sums it up. we had to try something different that would suprise NE and we didn't
