This is the first time in a long time that we have had this much talent on this side of the ball DL: Ellis, Jenkins, Coleman LB: combo of Thomas, Barton, Harris, Pace, Gholston DB: Revis, Rhodes, *, * we could use some DBs and depth, but I am really excited
Agreed... There's more than 1 way to skin a cat and people can cry about the 4-3 and this draft all they want but.................. THERE IT IS. The Core of the Jets next playoff run defense.
Yeah if Kris Jenkins switches smoothly and reaches his potential it could prove to be a top D next year, with his presence increasing the performance of the front 7. The secondary ain't so bad even without real stars at the SS, 2CB positions. Hopefully Gholston can keep his motor up and drop back into coverage when it's needed.
The people who will appreciate the possibilities more than anyone, and will thus be able to do the most about it are the players and the coaches of the NYJs. Each smart success that is identified -- first in FA, next in the Draft, and then in practice and pickups from the FA after market -- all will empower these guys. ...an exciting time.
The Jets finally have the players in place to successfully run a 3-4 defense, I look forward to a vast improvement on that side of the ball
Yea we added some great pieces...and some unique skillsets to attac the opposition w/. I'm very excited.
Exactly, a couple years ago, we had no personel for the 3-4. Now, we are stacked. This is going to be one nasty defense. With Harris, Barton, Pace and Gholston? Are you kidding me? Dream come true...we have one of the top linebacker crews in the NFL PERIOD
Bahaha...lovin it! Belichick is panicking right now, and or trying to get a camera crew together.
I Think with the Signing of already proven players in Jenkins and Pace aswell as Faneca , Woody and Tony Richardson the Talent and Veteran leadership has gone up with this team ALOT, Especially the D with the Young Gunners Harris and Revis now add Gholston the future lookz good. Still remains to be seemed if they can come together and overtake the Evil Pats.
Can Thomas play inside in the 3-4? I'm not too high on Barton on the inside personally. Gholston can have an impact on any down so I'd hate to limit his looks early in his career. With long term contracts to Pace, Thomas, and (eventually) Gholston the Jets should look to getting all three on the field as much as possible. Moving one inside seems to be the best possible option IMHO. Hell, the Pats were considering moving Adalius Thomas inside if they drafted an OLB so its a doable transition.
Gholston still has to learn how to play linebacker and he has to do it at the NFL level. I don't know when he will be able to play regularly.
if the front 7 can apply some nasty pressure, the two ** wont matter as much. It can make mediocre DBs look great. See Asante Samuel. ( ok hes good, but not great.)
The thing about this defense that impresses me is the sheer size of the front 7. Yes, there are some speedy guys, but the key to this defense is just how freakin' big everybody is. Stopping the run is so much about having mountains on the line that just don't move. Now that we have some big players, we're going to be able to control the line of scrimmage and not get pushed around. It's been years since we've had a decent run defense, especially up the middle. We now have the personnel to clog the middle and speed on the outside to prevent long runs that way. It's going to be fun watching this defense. That said, the team isn't complete yet. We still need: ILB - The spot next to Harris is a big deal. Barton's okay, but he's not going to last much longer and we could use more size/speed at the position. One of the nice things about a 3-4 is that LBs that fit can be drafted later. Hopefully we pick one of these up. DE - Ellis and Coleman are fine, but we need depth here. I'm sure Gholston or Thomas can play the position if necessary, but we could use some depth since this is the position that tires most easily. Of course, S and CB are big needs, too. But against the run, we'll be pretty nasty.
well if we like it now how pumped would you guys be to come away with Kentwan Balmer or Tyvon Branch with our 4th rounder today? we can have an even better defense at that point... Also don't peg gholston as a starter right away, he needs time to learn, to adapt, and how to keep that motor running, that appears to dissapear occasionally.
I'm happy with the defense. It was coming on last year in the second half and now we have added a NT and two edge rushers. What I'm worried about is the offense. We still don't have a QB and our RBs won't scare anybody. They will still stack the box against the run and even with Faneca and Woody the running game won't be what it might have been with McFadden. We still need to find a way to score more points.
I LOVE the look of our D, it's taken 3 years but we finally have the pieces in place to be a really good 3-4 team. I envision Gholston like John Abraham in his rookie year(though hopefully he plays more than 6 games), just a guy who comes in on passing downs and wreaks havoc on the QB.
gholston started out as lb @ osu.what worries me is barring getting more picks this year we'll only have 9 draft picks the last 2 years.that makes the depth of this team very thin
