I am so upbeat about this season -- and I really think that based on the schedule we can win 8-10 games. Really.

Therefore, to get myself back to reality -- in another post yesterday -- I came up with my list of worst regular season losses. (All post season losses are memorable).

Id have to think about the top ten regular season losses (the playoff losses are all hard to take). There alot of bad ones -- but ill take into account whether the game had an effect on the season or whether it was a big game. Here are my first seven--in no particular order. I started in 1980 -- I go back to 1974 but my memory THAT far back is sketchy.

    1. The Detroit Home Game where Hall Missed the FG to make the playoffs
    2. The Leon Johnson Game to make the playoffs
    3. The Fake Spike--Jets went into nose dive for rest of season (no pun intended)
    4. The Houston Game to Make the Playoffs
    5. 1980--Loss to New Orleans. Jets finished 4-12 that year but the 'Aints came in in December 0-14 and beat the jets 21-20. Saints finished 1-15.
    6. 1984--Loss to colts 9-5. Jets were 6-4. Colts were 3-7. I recall the game was in a downpour. Jets always played 6-3,7-6 games against bad teams. This was a killer. (See 6-0 loss the year after to much better colt team)
    7. 1993 -- Loss to colts 9-6 to 4-12 colts. Win makes the jets 8-4. They beat skins 3-0 next week then lose next three to miss playoffs

Do you think a loss this sunday would fall into this category of "worst regular season losses?" I know it's a bit early in the season, but we got Indy, then @ Jax after this Buffalo game. After 5 games (and with a loss on Sunday), we could be 1-4. Of course, this is pessimistic.
All I'm saying is that a win will build momentum and confidence, but imagine what a loss would be like...

The loss to Buffalo in Rich Stadium in 1993 was tough too. Blanchard misse 3 makeable kicks and we lose 16-14. The last one as time expired. That team actually could've done something, we had a pretty good defense that was ranked in the top 5 of the league.

With three of the first five games against New England, Indianapolis and Jacksonville (36-12 combined last year, 6-0 so far this year), and the other two games on the road, a 2-3 record would not be bad for this team at all. The schedule gets much easier after the first 5 (Miami, Detroit, and Cleveland before the bye, Houston, Green Bay, Miami, and Oakland afterwards - those teams are 0-12 combined right now), so even a 1-4 record wouldn't be a complete disaster, as long as Mangini doesn't lose the team as a result.
