http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/Commentary/Columns/2008/sohn030608.htm New York Jets (4-12): With the possible exception of the Browns, no team can stake a better claim to the league?s best offseason than the Jets. Knowing their offensive and defensive lines needed substantial face lifts, coach Eric Mangini and GM Mike Tannenbaum coaxed owner Woody Johnson to dig deep into his pockets to reel in a trio of horses to take up residence in the trenches. OLG Alan Faneca is arguably the best in the business and will aid in the maturation process of supremely talented but inconsistent young linemen D?Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold. ORT Damien Woody isn?t the beast he was in his early career in New England, but he?s still a major upgrade over Anthony Clement. In Kris Jenkins, Mangini finally has a mammoth nose tackle to anchor the defense. Throw in coveted OLB Calvin Pace to wreak havoc off the edge, and we have ourselves a team that looks to be substantially better than the 2006 Jets squad that bullied its way into the postseason.
All of these moves are simply awesome. Jets in 08, first non-patriot AFCE title since 02 is bound to come this season.
Its a great article ... give it a read. I would have commented, but i am down an arm. Rotater cuff surgery a day ago ... yay for percosette!
Exactly... The Patriots won 18 games in the 2007-2008 season... The Jets won 18 games COMBINED in the 2005-2006, 2006-2007, and 2007-2008 seasons.... People need to SLOW DOWN
Theres no reason why we cant compete in 08 with the Patriots. We almost beat them in December in spite of the fact that our offense was completely broken and Adrien Clarke handed the Pats 7 points on our first play from scrimmage. We added about 10 Pro-Bowl appearances via free agency and we still have the draft coming up where we will select ahead of the Patriots and take the player that they want (Gholston). In addition, Pats have lost Samuel and Stallworth and a few other key guys (Gay and Wilson). As long as Tannenbaum hits another couple of early round homeruns in this year's draft (think Harris and Revis from 07)- this division is ours. Im not in awe of the Patriots.
Would be nice, but I don't see it happening this season. In my opinion, the Pats can't be as good as last season. It's almost impossible. However, I still think they have an edge on the Jets, as well as the rest of the AFC East. Tom Brady is still one of the best QB's in the game today. Randy Moss, when motivated, is probably the most game-changing WR in all of football. Their O-line is incredible. Yes, their D is aging, but they can still get the job done. If 75% of our off-season moves turn out well, I would say we're still at least one year away from eyeing the AFC crown. We also need to have our draft picks pay off for us. I think V-Go would be a great addition to our D. Our severe lack of a pass rush last season killed our defense. I think most of us here would agree that our QB situation doesn't exactly inspire confidence. If we learned anything from Big Blue, you can win it all with a solid line on both sides of the ball.
Horses in the trenches? Talk about mixing your metaphors... Nice to see some positive coverage, though!
We still have no QB and no playmakers on offense. The latter could change on draft night with DMC or even Mendenhall, but we still are putting the team in the unproven at best hands of Kellen Clemens.
As Damon Runyan once said, the race is not always to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, but that's the way to bet. Anyone who is looking for the Jets to win the AFC East needs to repeat these words to himself two or three hundred times.
...........and the Giants went to the SB and won against them, a 18-0 team. Pats have lost some players , and father time is catching up with some of them. I'm far from beaming with sunshine, but I see no reason we can't push them. The only team in the AFC east we won't have to worry about is the Phins. Don't be surprised if the Bills start strongly next season.
If we had a Franchise QB, anyone you like, with the same team around him, would you then think we could challenge? For me QB is now pretty much our weakest spot on the team. I wouldn't mind Ryan on day 1.
The Pats have lost some big time players this year. We have signed some. We will be closer but we aren't there yet. And don't undersell the impact Tony Richardson can make. Especially inside the red zone. Depending on what we can do in the draft we might even get better before the season starts.
Everyone forgets the Bills who were better than us last year and will be in the mix this year. This team is always underestimated and they basically own us head to head. We are better, we were 4 & 12 and still have no offensive fire power. Lets see what we have when the season starts. Right now we are a team that will depend on winning close games and in the NFL that means lossing them as well. We still have a mediocre backfield and slow TE with good hands who can't get down the field and two nice possession WR one of whom is heading for the door.
