Why didn't we see any of the evidence of his intelligence last season? Also, if he's so smart, why was he stupid enough to not be more of a disciplinarian, and to allow Richardson and Mo to frequently be late to meetings? Sorry, Andy Reid and Parcells, I don't buy it.
Bowles has always been held in high regards by many but last season he actually regressed in my eyes. In 2017 I hope to see Bowles improve on many of his faults from the 2016 season and improve drastically. If not it will lead to another lost season and it will cost him his job.
I truly hope he will show a lot of signs of that intelligence this season and show a great deal of learning, progress and improvement. After all, that's what's best for the Jets. It will help create better stabilty. I'm not gonna hold my breath, however. I think we will see very early on whether Bowles has learned anything from the last 2 seasons, and if he has actually progressed or remained the same. We'll see in the very first game how prepared to play the team is. We'll see what, if any, adjustments he makes and how he manages the game. If he doesn't show any signs of growth or progress in the first game, he'd darn well better wake up quickly and show it during the rest of the season, or he should be a goner.
I think we saw the down side in Bowles this past season. When things are going right, as in 2015, he's a calm, cool, and collected coach that really seems to normalize larger games - as we saw with his ability to win five in a row down the stretch. Problem is, that simplistic behavior is not what you need out of a coach when the tides turn and your team is under producing. You have to look at Bowles as a whole, not just this past year 2015 - showed many signs of a rookie Head Coach, but ultimately took an overachieving team to the door step of the playoffs, only for the clock to strike midnight on his QB's once in a lifetime season. Even so, most of the losses in 2015 (besides Oakland) were a result of the offense stalling and his defense keeping them in the fight. 2016 - regressed to the sense that he put his eggs in the basket of Fitzpatrick and let his defense fall from a top 10 defense to a bottom 10. That can't happen. Granted injuries were prevalent and in fighting seems to have been an issue, Bowles did not show the ability to navigate rocky waters (essentially a trait that doomed Rex as well). My issue with Bowles, he seems to still be resting his laurels on his ability to coach defense, I want a coach that is going to be a CEO. Have a hand in all aspects of the game, and put trusted advisers in coordinator positions. A game that sticks out to me is the KC game this year. Bowles should have been wringing Gailey by his neck for continuing to throw down near the goal line, especially after forte showed the ability to run well in between the tackles the previous week against Buffalo. I'm not writing off Bowles yet, but I need to see some progress. I know a lot of you aren't going to like this, but don't be surprised to see a 6-10 or 7-9 season and he gets one more shot to figure it out. I think if Bowles regresses he's gone, if he shows slight improvement, he's given one more shot.
Is Eric Allen stoned out of his head all the time, or just a little slow? And I'll believe Bowles is intelligent when he demonstrates it via his handling of this team, not because other people say he is.
"You are what your record says you are." Bill Parcells Intelligence and knowledge don't mean anything without proper application, and not everyone can apply it to every situation. Being a HC demands being able to coordinate a lot more moving parts than being a DC, and it certainly requires someone who understands BOTH sides of the ball. Neither Rex, nor Bowles have shown that understanding. They both also failed to manage a game properly, and failed to manage their locker rooms well. I'm not of the school that believes that if you wait long enough a frog will simply learn how to become a prince. Woody once again demonstrated his utter lack of knowing how to build a winning organization, and we're going to suffer yet another lost year. Parcells knew what he was talking about.
A coach is only as smart as his players are good. That's kind of a universal standard at work and last season Bowles was dumb as a brick because his players mostly sucked balls. This year it's going to be worse in terms of talent and Bowles is going to look like an absolute moron before things are done for the year. He might look like he has a half a clue if the Jets go sign a bunch of free agents but then that'll be because the organization doesn't have a clue.
You're too kind to coaches. On the contrary, GOOD coaches, coach their players' ability up. As much as I despise him, BB does that in spades. OTH, BAD coaches drag their players down, and we've now had two examples of that in Rex and Bowles. Sure, the personnel wasn't great, but didn't the HC have say sos in choosing that personnel? I don't know for sure, but the rumor is that Bowles was the one that lobbied Macc hard to finally given in and bring Fitz back, to prove the saying "Be careful what you wish for" is true. And where was Bowles as Fitz was throwing 6 SIX!!! interceptions in one game? I think that was the turning point of the season when he lost the majority of the team, and unless they replace everyone, will go forward with this team lost to him. I fully agree with your last statement though, and that's where the REAL problem is.
Yea...I wish Bowles well but I don't see much chance for success next year. I see them topping out at 6 wins or so. Not sure if that's going to keep the fan base happy.
-Don't know how smart he is but I do know he can't seem figure out how to scheme against the WR screen. -Don't know how smart he is but I do know he doesn't know how to manage his timeouts. -Don't know how smart he is but I do know he does't know when it's time to bench a player who is struggling.
Bowles so far has done OK in the player development category. I still think Bowles can be a successful HC in this league. However, this roster needs work. Bowles and Mac need to continue to work together and I think they can achieve their goals.
Lack of effort from the players. How many times have you seen Revis give up on a play cause he didn't want to tackle? Even so, this doesn't seem to be a coaching issue but a player personnel issue. That type of attitude seams through the entire defense. Better then Rex Ryan who would burn all of his TOs before the 4th QTR. Still needs work though. This is the only thing I agree with in your post. Not benching Fitz after the Chiefs game ruined the season. At the same time, Mac folded with the Fitz situation.
You have it exactly backwards: it IS a coaching issue. If a coach sees a player dogging it, or under-performing for any reason, and doesn't replace that player, he's the one to blame. Bowles lost most of the team with his decisions to not replace players like this.
Can't scheme for players that don't put out full effort. Bowles probably should've played the younger players earlier in the season, would've probably fixed the issue or at least helped. Outside of Burris, how many of those corners were good tacklers this season? Buster absolutely not, especially on the outside. Not benching players earlier was probably Bowles biggest mistake. Scheming not so much.
Yeah that's what I said a couple of posts ago, he should've benched some of the players that weren't performing. Bowles still can develop players, and he has a good scheme, but we need younger, more hungry players.
You're right, but you CAN make coaching decisions to address that, and Bowles showed a lack of decision making in this regard. I don't think he has the stomach to make these kinds of choices.
I think this was a huge lesson learned for Bowles in terms of player benching / accountability. Hopefully he learns from it, cause Rex didn't learn from it.
