That is some impressive insight into our recent safety debacle and helps ease my mind a litte more for MNF. But I'd be lying if I said I was no longer worried about coverage breakdowns and blown assignments now that our full tme shotcaller won't be out there.
Not so sure I put 100% faith into this. He says that Smith will not have as MUCH of a size mismatch against TE's, which is true. But that still doesn't matter, he's slow and I sure as hell wouldn't want to see him singled against one.
I'd love to see Ihedigbo get some snaps for blitzing, which I'm sure he will. I think doubling a TE with Smith and Wilson would be good too.
Very diligent analysis. As I posted in Leonhard's injury thread, I'm not too worried about the injury because Rex has shown his Defenses can overcome injuries and still perform at a high level. This analysis reinforces that confidence by examining the players (Safeties) themselves. My only concern, regarding Smith, are those pesky yard-lines all over the field; it seems those things have a vendetta against him, trying to trip him at crucial moments in the game.
Good read....thankfully we play Monday and not Sunday so we had Saturday to prepare instead of having to travel that day.
Excellent write up. The only thing I discount is Football isn't baseball, so stats to me do not tell the entire story. They can't tell you how good or bad a player is if you haven't seen him. This is especially true with one of the self professed football mavens (hahahaha) that the entire forum knows is full of shit. So while a player may have better numbers than the other, it is hard to quantify how it fits into the larger picture. Leonhard is the QB of the D as we all know. So while Smith might have better numbers individually, is the general quality of the D going to deteriorate? Going on past history, Rex Ryan has dealt with more catastrophic injuries then Leonhard's to be sure. Rex's defense have always come out of it rather well. I think the D will be fine, I just hope it is immediate and they don't have significant breakdowns adjusting to Leonhard's loss. That would be backbreaking against the Pats.
The only problem I've had with Leonard is his size (5-8, 188), he's real short and light for a safety. Pool, Dig, and Smith are more the prototypical size and weight for the position (approximately 6-0, 200+ pounds). I think the biggest deficit comes from the playcalling knowlege though. Still I think that can be handled somewhat from the sideline.
