Falcons want big, strong guys in draft

That sounds like taking Gholston, Dorsey, Ellis, or if Long falls to them at 3... It makes me think that Ryan isn't near their draft plans and they'll go with a guy in rnd 2.

Odd strategy. We'll have to see how this works out for them.

    1. Miami Dolphins
    Vernon Gholston
DE, Ohio State Gholston is gathering momentum and is one of the players who has great skill, strength and potential to develop. I think Chris Long is still a strong candidate for this spot but Gholston is a rare athlete and his 30.5 tackles for loss and 22.5 sacks in the last two years may be the tip of the iceberg.

    Previous mock pick: Chris Long

    Team Pick Analysis

    2. St. Louis Rams
    Chris Long
DE, Virginia The Rams will be excited if Long is available at the second pick. Some believe he's a better fit for a 3-4 defense but defensive coordinator Jim Haslett knows how to keep this player on the field for any down-and-distance. Jake Long gets solid consideration but Chris Long and his 65 plays behind the line of scrimmage in 37 starts are too much to resist.

    Previous mock pick: Jake Long

    Team Pick Analysis

    3. Atlanta Falcons
    Glenn Dorsey
DT, LSU Matt Ryan is still on the board and they need a quarterback, but Dorsey proved at his workout that he is healthy and ready to go. A "3-technique" who can play like a young Warren Sapp with a QB selection in the second round may be the right move. Keep your eye on the Falcons' private workout with Ryan.

    Previous mock pick: Glenn Dorsey

    Team Pick Analysis

    4. Oakland Raiders
    Darren McFadden
RB, Arkansas A number of off-the-field issues surround McFadden, but not the kinds of things the Raiders worry about -- especially after the speed he demonstrated at the combine. Last week I had the Raiders trading down with the Jets but that's when it looked like Vernon Gholston would be available at the No. 4 spot.

Previous mock pick: Trade with Jets (who take Vernon Gholston)

    Team Pick Analysis

    5. Kansas City Chiefs
    Jake Long
OT, Michigan The Chiefs need a quarterback to compete with Brodie Croyle but they also need a tackle to start right away. The revised top of this draft could leave Jake Long at this spot and the Chiefs, like the Falcons, answer their QB situation a little later.

    Previous mock pick: Matt Ryan

    Team Pick Analysis

    6. New York Jets
    Leodis McKelvin
CB, Troy It's possible the Jets will miss on Gholston and McFadden, but there's an excellent corner prospect and the signing of Andre Woolfork doesn't replace McKelvin, who not only has cover skills but also has eight touchdowns in returns.

Previous mock pick: Trade with Raiders (who take Darren McFadden)

    Team Pick Analysis

    7. Cincinnati Bengals (Projected trade with New England from San Francisco)
    Sedrick Ellis
DT, USC The Bengals are close to Ellis and can't take any chances that another team jumps ahead of them to get him. Ellis is a player they have needed since Marvin Lewis came to Cincinnati. New Orleans also needs Ellis.

Previous mock pick: Trade with Saints, who take Sedrick Ellis

    Team Pick Analysis

    8. Baltimore Ravens
    Matt Ryan
QB, Boston College The word is the Ravens would not move up for Ryan, but would love to have him fall to them at the No. 8 spot. There's a chance new head coach John Harbaugh gets a solid young man to rebuild the Ravens around Cam Cameron's short passing attack.

    Previous mock pick: Ryan Clady

    Team Pick Analysis

    9. New England Patriots (Projected trade with Cincinnati)
    Branden Albert
G, Virginia Don't be surprised to see the Patriots look at their offensive line for two reasons. One, they gave up a lot of sacks and pressures in the Super Bowl; and two, Belichick has taken many big offensive linemen with his first-round picks. Albert can play guard or tackle. The Patriots did not sign any significant talent to help the offensive line so far in free agency.

Previous mock pick: Derrick Harvey (Bengals' pick)

    Team Pick Analysis

    10. New Orleans Saints
    Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
CB, Troy Rodgers-Cromartie only has one kidney and it could be a medical concern. His skills are just what the Saints need even though they signed Randal Gay. They could look at linebacker Keith Rivers or a tight end, but the corners will be graded higher at this point.

    Previous mock pick: Leodis M

They just took Jamaal Anderson and they still have John Abraham, they need players at every position EXCEPT defensive end.

I think they'll take Dorsey or Jake Long if he's there.

Couldn't the Bengals just trade up with us instead of the Pats? That would be frustrating to see that happen on draft day...

I will be upset as well Wolfe, but the thing that would piss me off the most, is if we don't trade back (for someone who wants Ellis) but the Pats do that would drive me off a wall. your telling me that the Saints/Bengals who apparently are desperate for a dt will move to 7 but not 6? i would be so pissed off i wouldnt care if we took colt Brennan at #6 i wouldnt be as pissed off as i would be if the pats moved down again.

Why would he get this kind of talk? Didn't they watch his Bowl Game and see that he's just some athlete who got lucky 22 times in his last 21 games?

Would you expect him to come out and say "We want small guys, maybe someone a little slow, prehaps someone who can eat 40 hotdogs faster than run 40 yards, but not someone too strong. We want the line of scrimage to be a battle everytime out, its more fun for the fans if they don't know if we can controll it on any given play."

Nothing to see here except the obvious pre draft deflection of a question really.

atlanta will take dorsey.remember mike smith came from jax where he made his money with 2 stud dt's.he'll try to do it again in atlanta

  12. Dorsey fits in w/ what they want to do. If he's healthy he's tied for the best overall prospect in this draft.

    Falcons fan chiming in here...

I think you'll find most of the fan base leaning away from Ryan and heavily towards one of the linemen - Jake Long, Glenn Dorsey or Sedrick Ellis. Chris Long would be a possibility as well, in spite of us drafting Jamaal Anderson last year.

In fact, as you guys put together your wish lists, don't count on the Falcons taking Ryan. I'd be very, very surprised if they take him.

On a side note: do you see you guys trying to move ahead of the Raiders to take McFadden, or are your priorities elsewhere?
