I was going through threads yesterday and saw a thread posted by Tony asking about a long-time, original and (very sadly) recently departed member of this forum, Green Guy, and how he would have loved the defense that Rex is fielding for our favorite team, and it got me thinking about what drew me to this board in the first place.

Back in the day, there were slim pickings for Jets forums and I found 2 boards that immediately drew my attention, for good and bad. There was the 'other' board, a badly-designed website which had a pepper of football posts buried under threads about the selection of brats at the last tailgate and a the appearance or two of Jets alumni at... the last tailgate. While I do appreciate a good tailgate, I wasn't looking around the internet in search of buddies with the best barbeque skills.

Then there was www.theganggreen.com, which had a less-populated forum but was packed with intelligent Jets fans who were earnestly discussing the goings-on with the team and how it needed to improve and tons of other inspired, emotional posts from only the best of Jets fans. Green Guy was one of the foremost members here, and it was a debate that was raging between GG (who would have been doing backflips over what we are seeing on the field right now) and junc that drew me here. This was the best-designed and most professional of the two sites, and there was less joking and more debate. Little tailgate talk, more X's and O's. I was hooked.

Over the years, with the inevitable influx of Jets fans seeking the same thing I was, and things started to get a bit watered down in the football forum of this site. I took it as something inevitable due to a larger number of people and a less satisfying football product to the hardcore football purist out there.

Well, over the past month or so, I have noticed an awesome jump in well-conceived and thought provoking posts being made. I know that it can mostly be attributed to the fact that there is not only hope for this team again, but excitement and expectations again.

And it's not just newer posters trying to prove their football brains to the masses, it's also long-time regulars who had previously lost their will to put a lot of thought into a post, because they rightly figured it would be largely ignored and buried under single lines saying things like '[This guy] sucks' or 'Fire [this guy]'.

The SOJ's are being replaced by a rabid contender, and the intelligent TGG poster is noticing and talking about it.

I know people want to see less of the knee-jerk, angry posts that have little thought going into them, but those will never go away. They have always been here and always will be. But when you see people turn that half-assed keyboard vomit into a serious football debate, that's the sign of an excellent forum. Which is what this is. The best around.

So, I've changed my mind about the theory that a large number of Jets fans will inevitably result in a diluted forum for football talk. Not the way things are changing here, as a result of Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez.

    Long live the TGG Renaissance.

Good post.... very true about things looking up from both the team and the forum. You can certainly see a lot more debating, and less hating these days, although I can guarantee that NDmick will vehemently disagree with you about the intelligence of the fans. When we lose though, this place is like a big ol' fire pit, raging to the 9th degree.

Here's to hoping this can be one of those seasons we look back warmly on and smile and think it's good to be a Jets fan.

    RIP Green Guy.

Great post Abyz, and your right. I think it correlates to the fact I think a good deal of posters here are good students of the game and the see-saw success over the past decade forces the over-reactions to sometimes bellow over the knowledgeable debate and discussion to get buried sometimes.

Now with a more successful team, people who simply like to criticize and complain matter of factly in hind sight, have little to nothing to say anymore. and those who notice more of the games nuances and actual intuition for the x's and o's will have more prevalent conversations.

although I think some around here will forever have "the sky is falling" attitude after a loss, thats just natural. not everyone can try to see the big picture.

here's to less trolls, more relevant talk, and the continued success of our team and more than willing fanbase.

Being one of the originals from back in the day, I too have noticed a increased in the quality of both the posters and the posts they make. Although threads often are much too long to follow from beginning to end, I do try to take in as much as I can as the newer fans' excitment seems to be infectious. Even after the loss to the Saints, there wasn't the usual barking and backbiting by the faithful here. That showed me that the board, and alot of its people, have finally grown up and learned how to disagree without being crude or ignorant.

There was a time when I'd stay away from this board until the Wednesday after a loss. I'm glad I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore..

Great post abyzmul. I've noticed the same thing lately, and it's nice to see.

Personally, I joined the site the day both Chad and Fiedler went down. I freaked out and ran to my computer to find somewhere to talk about it. (I had posted on the official Jets web site forum ages ago, but by then the forum was gone.) I actually Google'd for Jets forums, and TGG came up. I came here, and I've been to the site almost every day since.

I've checked out other sites out of curiosity, but none remotely compare to TGG. That's not blowing smoke either. This site is well run, visually appealing, and the most intelligent Jets fans post here.

    Viva la TGG!

It has been a long, long time (in fact I have never seen it until now) since I have seen the Darksiders this much at peace. Maybe Rex shuold be our president.

    1. Rest in Peace, Green Guy

    2. Kudos to you, Abyzmul

    3. You haven't heard my tantrums yet - you all have heard my tantrums even early in the season, at time even after wins. That speaks volumes about this team.

    4. I still think Schottenheimer sucks as OC. His effort is spent better elsewhere - namely, QB coach.

RIP Green Guy. When I joined back in the Herm days, I do remember the quality of much of what was being posted wasn't great, but there were always a large group of intelligent 'regulars' who were great in the BS forum as well as knowing a whole lot about football.

thats true Abyz, waaaay back when I first jumped into tgg.com things were smaller and probably more intelligent, but we still have a great number of our original posters who contribute in a great way to help dilute the garbage after a loss. Things have been getting better, and it really is an exciting time for the Jets.

Heck this board has become a how-to for all sorts of problems, we have the computer cleaning thread, hell anybody remember tight's infamous thread? The board has become not only a place of football discussion, but a place to ask questions and help out our fellow Jets fans in their everyday lives.

Can't wait to see what's in store for not only our team but our board.

But most of all we need to make a big shout out to Petro. He created TheGangGreen.com and its because of him we are all here, and able to enjoy the greatness of this place. Special Thanks to Petro and all of the posters who help to make this place so great!

Great, great post, byz. One fo the reasons I have started posting more is that there has been a lot less of the shit posts, and more intelligent, thought out football discussion. I hope it lasts as well.

The forums are actually more fun when we were bad and had moronic coaches (spleen venting makes for good reading).....but I'll take excellent football/coaching over the forum shenanigans any day of the week.

When you look at the OCs out there, we could be far worse off than we are. Give shotty some more time. He is breaking in a rookie, even though the rookie is promising.

No doubt...i guess when you start winning, people start coming to the boards. I just hope this place does not end up being like patsfans forums because that place is ridden with ridiculous posters

I joined the board after googling 'Jets Forum,' TGG and a few others popped up. Seeing how easy this board was to use and the qulaity of the posters, I decided to join here. For about 2 months I just read threads. I learned so much from posts by you abyz, Tony, GG, Winstonbiggs, and others. I was worried I wouldn't have much to contribute. But one day I decided to jump in and join the discussion.

So I made posts here and there. Then a couple days later I decided to make a thread an introduce myself. I was worried I would be laughed off the board (I still am a great admirer of the football knowledge of those regulars). But many of the regulars reached out and made me feel welcome, especially you abyzmul. It was a big reason why I decided to stay (not kissing your ass abyz, it's the truth ) and why I have been coming everyday since.

In the past couple of years the quality of posters and threads had really diminished. So I basically stayed in the BS forum, specifically the bunker. Things were going downhill. But I have noticed a difference in the past couple of months as well. The quality of debate and discussion in definitely increasing, and the nonsense is moving to the background. I have found myself more inclined to engage in discussions in the Jets forum.

So here is to GG, RIP. And here is a return to the good ole days and continued improvement to the quality of the board. A big thank you to Petro for putting in so much time, money, and effort to giving us TGG.

I've only been her a short time, but really enjoy the posts on this site. I have made my attempt at threads, but still feel my value is better served with my comments and reactions made toward your posts. Afterall, i can't spend all day in here like some of you seem to do.
